साधुताका परम आदर्श

सन् 1844 ई0 में कलकत्तेके संस्कृत कालेजमें एक व्याकरणाध्यापककी आवश्यकता हुई और प्रबन्ध समितिने ईश्वरचन्द्र विद्यासागरको वह पद दिया । विद्यासागरको उस समय पचास रुपये मासिक मिलते थे और अब नये स्थानपर उन्हें नब्बे रुपये मिलते। पर आश्चर्य! विद्यासागरने सोचा कि उनके मित्र तर्कवाचस्पति व्याकरणमें उनसे अधिक दक्ष हैं और उन्होंने समितिके सामने इस पदको उन्हींको दिये जानेका प्रस्ताव रखा।अन्तमें समितिने विद्यासागरकी सम्मति मान ली। इससे विद्यासागरको अपार आनन्द हुआ। वे आनन्दके आवेशमें अपने मित्रको उसका समाचार देनेके लिये कलकत्तेसे कुछ दूरतक चले गये।

जब तर्कवाचस्पतिने विद्यासागरके मुँहसे यह सारी कहानी सुनी, तब वे आश्चर्यचकित रह गये। वे बोल उठे – ‘विद्यासागर ! तुम मनुष्य नहीं, बल्कि मनुष्य वेषमें साक्षात् देवता हो।’

In the year 1844, there was a need for a grammar teacher in the Sanskrit College of Calcutta and the management committee gave that post to Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar. Vidyasagar used to get fifty rupees monthly at that time and now at the new place he would get ninety rupees. But surprise! Vidyasagar thought that his friend was more proficient in logic and grammar than him and he proposed to the committee to give this post to him. Finally, the committee accepted Vidyasagar’s opinion. Vidyasagar was overjoyed by this. In a fit of joy, he went some distance from Calcutta to inform his friend about it.
When Tarkavachaspati heard this whole story from the mouth of Vidyasagar, he was surprised. They spoke – ‘Vidyasagar! You are not a human, but a deity in human form.’
