अपनी खोज

सम्यक् सम्बोधि प्राप्त करनेके बाद भगवान् बुद्ध वाराणसी चले आये। मृगदाव ऋषिपत्तनमें पञ्चवर्गीय शिष्योंको सम्बुद्धकर उन्होंने चारिका विचरणके लिये उरुबल वनमें प्रवेश किया और एक घने वृक्षकी छायामें पद्मासन लगाकर बैठ गये।
‘वह इधर ही गयी होगी कितनी नीच है वह ?’किसीने अत्यन्त उद्वेगभरे स्वरमें चिन्ता प्रकट की।पर वह इस वन खण्डसे भागकर जायगी कहाँ।कितने अमूल्य थे हमारे खाभरण’ दूसरेने एक वृक्षकी छायामें ठहरकर संतोषकी साँस ली। दूसरे साथी आ गये।

“हम उसके लिये उरुबलका एक-एक कोना छान मारेंगे। वेश्याका विश्वास करनेवाला धोखा खाता ही है।’ लोगोंने तत्परता प्रकट की।

वे उसकी खोजमें एक साथ निकल पड़े। वनके मध्यभागमें प्रवेश करते ही उन्होंने विशेष शान्तिकी अनुभूति की कुछ दूर जानेपर उन्होंने भगवान् बुद्धका दर्शन किया। दिव्य पुरुष समझकर उनकी चरण धूलि मस्तकपर चढ़ायो। भगवान्के कृश शरीरकी स्वर्णिम प्रदीसिसे वे विमुग्ध हो गये।

‘आपने उसको इधरसे जाते देखा है ?’ तीसोंभद्रवर्गीय मित्रोंने भगवान्से निवेदन किया। ‘मुझे अपने-आपके सिवा दूसरा दीख ही नहीं रहा है। इतना ही सत्य है।’ वे मौन हो गये।

‘भन्ते! हमारा आशय एक स्त्रीसे है। वह वेश्या है। | हमलोग अपनी-अपनी पत्नियोंके साथ वन-विहार करने आये थे । पत्नीके अभावमें एक मित्रके मनोरञ्जनके लिये वह वेश्या हमारे साथ थी। हमें विशेष राग-रंगमें लिप्त देखकर हमारे कीमती रत्नालंकार आदि लेकर वह इसी वनखण्डमें अदृश्य हो गयी है। हमें उसीकी खोज है।’ भद्रजनोंने पश्चात्ताप किया।

‘भद्रो ! जगत्के विषय-भोग और सुख नश्वर तथा क्षणिक हैं। रत्नालंकार आदि तो आते-जाते रहते हैं। स्त्रीकी खोजसे कहीं अधिक सत्य आत्माकी खोज आवश्यक है।’ भगवान् बुद्धने धर्मचक्षु जाग्रत् किया। अपनी शीतल मुसकान बिखेर दी।

‘ठीक है, भन्ते! हमें स्त्रीकी आवश्यकता नहीं है, आत्माकी खोज करनी है।’ भद्रवर्गीयोंने भगवान्से प्रव्रज्या – उपसम्पदाकी याचना की।

भगवान्ने धार्मिक सत्कथाओंसे उन्हें आत्मज्ञान और सद्धर्मका मर्म समझाया। वे उनके क्षणिक सत्सङ्गसे अपनी खोजमें लग गये।

After attaining perfect enlightenment, Lord Buddha moved to Varanasi. Addressing the five-class disciples at Mrigadava Rishipattana, he entered the Urubal forest for a charika wandering and sat down in the shade of a dense tree in a padmasana.
‘She must have gone here. How mean she is?’ Someone expressed concern in a very anxious voice. But where would she run away from this forest? Other companions arrived.
“We will sift through every corner of Urubal for her. He who believes in a harlot is deceived.’ People expressed readiness.
They set out together in search of him. As soon as he entered the middle of the forest, he felt a special peace. After going some distance, he saw Lord Buddha. Thinking him as a divine man, he offered the dust of his feet on his head. They were fascinated by the golden light of the Lord’s lean body.
‘Have you seen him go by?’ Thirty noble friends requested the Lord. ‘I can’t see anyone but myself. That is the truth.’ They were silent.
‘Bhante! We mean a woman. She is a prostitute. | We had come for a forest walk with our wives. The prostitute was with us to entertain a friend in the absence of his wife. Seeing us indulged in special passion and colour, she has disappeared into this forest with our precious gems and ornaments. We are looking for him. The gentlemen repented.
‘Bhadro! The sensual pleasures and pleasures of the world are mortal and transient. Gemstones, etc., come and go. The search for the true soul is more necessary than the search for a woman. Lord Buddha awakened the eye of righteousness. She spread her cool smile.
‘All right, Bhanthe! We don’t need a woman, we need to search for the soul.’ The gentlemen asked the Lord for exile – sub-wealth.
The Lord explained the essence of self-knowledge and righteousness to them through religious stories. They went on their quest with their momentary satsang.
