व्याधने जहरसे बुझाया हुआ बाण हरिनोंपर चलाया। निशाना चूककर बाण एक बड़े वृक्षमें धँस गया। जहर 1 सारे वृक्षमें फैल गया। पत्ते झड़ गये और वृक्ष सूखने लगा। उस पेड़के खोखलेमें बहुत दिनोंसे एक तोता रहता था। उसका पेड़में बड़ा प्रेम था। अतः पेड़ सूखनेपर भी वह उसे छोड़कर नहीं गया था। उसने बाहर निकलना छोड़ दिया और चुगा-पानी न मिलने से वह भी सूखकर काँटा हो गया। वह धर्मात्मा तोता अपने साथी वृक्षके साथ ही अपने प्राण देनेको तैयार हो गया। उसकी इस उदारता, धीरज, सुख-दुःखमें समता और त्यागवृत्तिका वातावरणपर बड़ा असर हुआ। देवराज इन्द्रका उसके प्रति आकर्षण हुआ। इन्द्र आये । तोतेने इन्द्रको पहचान लिया। तब इन्द्रने कहा- ‘प्यारे शुक! इस पेड़पर न पत्ते हैं, न कोई फल। अब कोई पक्षी भी इसपर नहीं रहता। इतना बड़ा जंगल पड़ा है, जिसमें हजारों सुन्दर फल-फूलोंसे लदे हरे-भरे वृक्ष हैं और उनमें पत्तोंसे ढके हुए रहनेके लायक बहुत खोखले भी हैं। यह वृक्ष तो अब मरनेवाला ही हैं। इसके बचनेकी कोई आशा नहीं है। यह अब फल-फूल नहीं सकता। इन बातोंपर विचार करके तुम इस ठूंठे पेड़को छोड़कर किसी हरे-भरे वृक्षपर क्यों नहीं चले जाते ?’धर्मात्मा तोतेने सहानुभूतिकी लंबी साँस छोड़ते हुए दीन वचन कहे- ‘देवराज! मैं इसीपर जन्मा था, इसीपर पला और इसीपर अच्छे-अच्छे गुण भी सीखे। इसने सदा बच्चेके समान मेरी देख-रेख की, मुझे मीठे फल दिये और वैरियोंके आक्रमणसे बचाया। आज इसकी बुरी अवस्थामें मैं इसे छोड़कर अपने सुखके लिये कहाँ चला जाऊँ ? जिसके साथ सुख भोगे, उसीके साथ दुःख भी भोगूँगा। मुझे इसमें बड़ा आनन्द है। आप देवताओंके राजा होकर मुझे यह बुरी सलाह क्यों दे रहे हैं ? जब इसमें शक्ति थी, यह सम्पन्न था, तब तो मैंने इसका आश्रय लेकर जीवन धारण किया; आज जब यह शक्तिहीन और दीन हो गया, तब मैं इसे छोड़कर चल दूँ? यह कैसे हो सकता है।’ तोतेकी मधुर मनोहर प्रेमभरी वाणी सुनकर इन्द्रको बड़ा सुख मिला। उन्हें दया आ गयी। वे | बोले- ‘शुक! तुम मुझसे कोई वर माँगो ।’ तोतेने कहा- ‘आप वर देते हैं तो यही दीजिये कि यह मेरा प्यारा पेड़ पूर्ववत् हरा-भरा हो जाय।’ इन्द्रने अमृत बरसाकर पेड़को सींच दिया। उसमें फिरसे नयी-नयी शाखाएँ, पत्ते और फल लग गये। वह पूर्ववत् श्रीसम्पन्न हो गया और वह तोता भी अपने इस आदर्श व्यवहारके कारण आयु पूरी होनेपर देवलोकको प्राप्त हुआ। (महाभारत)
The hunter shot an arrow quenched with poison at the deer. Missing the target, the arrow got stuck in a big tree. The poison spread to the whole tree. The leaves fell and the tree started drying up. A parrot used to live in the hollow of that tree for many days. He had great love for the tree. So even when the tree was dry, he did not leave it. He stopped coming out and due to lack of water, he too dried up and became a thorn. That pious parrot got ready to give his life along with his companion tree. His generosity, patience, equanimity in happiness and sorrow and sacrifice had a big impact on the environment. Devraj Indra got attracted towards him. Indra came. The parrot recognized Indra. Then Indra said – ‘Dear Shuk! There are neither leaves nor any fruit on this tree. Now no bird even lives on it. There is such a big forest, in which there are thousands of green trees laden with beautiful fruits and flowers and there are many hollows in them to be covered with leaves. This tree is going to die now. There is no hope of survival. It can no longer flourish. Thinking about these things, why don’t you leave this stunted tree and go to a green tree? I was born on this, brought up on this and learned good qualities on this. It always took care of me like a child, gave me sweet fruits and protected me from enemy attacks. Today in its bad condition, where should I leave it and go for my happiness? With whom I enjoy happiness, I will also experience sorrow with him. I take great pleasure in it. Why are you giving me this bad advice being the king of the gods? When it had power, it was full, then I took shelter of it and took life; Today when it has become powerless and humble, then should I leave it and go? How is it possible.’ Indra got great pleasure after listening to the parrot’s sweet and charming love-filled speech. He got pity. They Said – ‘ Alas! You ask me for a boon.’ The parrot said- ‘If you give a boon, then give only this that my beloved tree becomes green as before.’ Indra showered nectar and watered the tree. Again new branches, leaves and fruits were planted in it. He became prosperous as before and that parrot also got Devlok on completion of his age because of his ideal behavior. (Mahabharata)
