लोकमान्य तिलक कितने स्थितप्रज्ञ थे, यह उनके जीवनकी अनेक घटनाओंसे प्रकट है। एक बार वे अपने कार्यालयमें किसी महत्त्वपूर्ण प्रश्नपर विचार कर रहे थे। प्रश्न बड़ा ही जटिल और राजनीतिक था। इधर उनके ज्येष्ठ पुत्र कई दिनोंसे बीमार थे।
एकाएक चपरासीने आकर कहा- ‘बड़े लड़के साहबकी तबीयत बहुत खराब है।’ तिलकने कुछ भी ध्यान नहीं दिया। वे अपने काममें लगे रहे। थोड़ी देर बाद उनके एक सहयोगीने आकरकहा—’पुत्र इतना अस्वस्थ है कि कब क्या हो जाय कहा नहीं जा सकता। फिर भी आप अपने काममें ही उलझे हैं! तिलकने प्रश्नोत्तरोंसे काममें बाधा होती देख बड़ी | उपेक्षासे कहा-‘उसके लिये डॉक्टरोंको कह दिया है। वे देख ही लेंगे। मैं जाकर क्या करूँगा। यह काम तो मुझे ही न करना है।’ साथी चला गया। काम पूरा करके लोकमान्य शामको घर लौटे तो पुत्रका प्राणोत्क्रमण हो चुका था। लगे हाथ कपड़े उतार वे उसकी महायात्राकी तैयारीमें जुट पड़े।

Lokmanya Tilak was so situated, it is evident from many incidents in his life. Once he was considering some important question in his office. The question was very complex and political. Here his eldest son was ill for many days.
Suddenly the peon came and said – ‘The health of the elder boy is very bad.’ Tilak did not pay any attention. They kept on doing their work. After some time, one of his associates came and said – ‘The son is so unwell that it cannot be said what will happen when. Still you are engrossed in your work! Seeing Tilak’s questions and answers obstructing his work, he grew up. Disregardingly said – ‘ I have told the doctors for that. They will definitely see. What will I go and do I don’t want to do this work.’ The partner is gone. After completing the work, when Lokmanya returned home in the evening, the son had passed away. Taking off their clothes, they started preparing for his great journey.
