दुर्योधनके मेवा त्यागे

द्वारकाधीश श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र पाण्डवोंके संधि- दूत बनकर आ रहे थे। धृतराष्ट्रके विशेष आदेशसे हस्तिनापुर सजाया गया था। दुःशासनका भवन, जो राजभवनसे भी सुन्दर था, वासुदेवके लिये खाली कर दिया गया था। धृतराष्ट्रने आदेश दिया था- ‘अश्व, गज, रथ, गायें, रत्न, आभरण और दूसरी जो भी वस्तुएँ हमारे यहाँ सर्वोत्तम हों, बहुमूल्य हों, वे दुःशासनके भवनमें एकत्र कर दी जायँ। वे सब श्रीवासुदेवको भेंट कर दी जायें।’

दुर्योधनके मनमें प्रेम नहीं था, पर वह ऊपरसे बड़े ही उत्साहपूर्वक पिताकी आज्ञाका पालन कर रहा था। उसने राज्यके सब कारीगर जुटा रखे थे भवन, मार्ग तथा नगरमें तोरण-द्वार सजानेके लिये। श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रके भोजनके लिये इतने पदार्थ बनवाये गये थे जिनकी गणना करना भी कठिन था। ऐसी साज-सज्जा की गयी थी कि वह हस्तिनापुरके इतिहासके लिये नवीन थी।

वासुदेवका रथ आया नगरसे बाहर जाकर दुर्योधनने भीष्म, द्रोण, कृपाचार्य, विदुर आदि वृद्ध सम्मान्य पुरुषों तथा भाइयोंके साथ उनका स्वागत किया। उनके साथ सव नगरमें आये।’आप पधारें!’ बड़ी नम्रतासे दुर्योधनने मार्ग दिखलाया। परंतु वासुदेव बोले- ‘राजन्! आपके उदार स्वागतके लिये धन्यवाद ! किंतु दूतका कर्तव्य है कि जबतक उसका कार्य न हो जाय, वह दूसरे पक्षके यहाँ भोजनादि न करे।’

दुर्योधनको बुरा लगा; किंतु अपनेको संयत करके वह बोला- आप दूत हैं, यह बात पीछे देखनेकी है। आप हमारे सम्मान्य सम्बन्धी हैं। हम जो कुछ सेवा कर सकते हैं, हमने उसका प्रयास किया है। आप हमारा स्वागत क्यों अस्वीकार कर रहे हैं?’

अब श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रने स्पष्ट सुना दिया- ‘राजन्! जो भूखसे मर रहा हो, वह चाहे जहाँ भोजन कर लेता है; किंतु जो ऐसा नहीं है, वह तो दूसरे घर तभी भोजन करता है, जब उसके प्रति वहाँ प्रेम हो भूखसे मैं मर नहीं रहा हूँ और प्रेम आपमें है नहीं।’

द्वारकानाथका रथ मुड़ गया विदुरके भवनकी ओर। उनके लिये जो दुःशासनका भवन सजाया गया था, उसकी ओर तो उन्होंने ताकातक नहीं।

Dwarkadhish Shrikrishnachandra was coming as a treaty-messenger of Pandavas. Hastinapur was decorated by the special order of Dhritarashtra. Dushasanaka Bhavan, which was even more beautiful than Raj Bhavan, was vacated for Vasudev. Dhritarashtra had ordered- ‘Horses, yards, chariots, cows, gems, ornaments and whatever other things are best and valuable in our place, they should be collected in the house of Dushasana. All of them should be offered to Srivasudev.’
Duryodhana had no love in his heart, but on top of that he was obeying his father very enthusiastically. He had gathered all the artisans of the state to decorate the buildings, roads and archways in the city. So many things were made for Shri Krishnachandra’s food that it was difficult to even count. Such decoration was done that it was new for the history of Hastinapur.
Vasudev’s chariot came out of the city and Duryodhana welcomed him along with old respected men and brothers like Bhishma, Drona, Kripacharya, Vidura etc. Everyone came to town with them. ‘You come!’ Very politely Duryodhana showed the way. But Vasudev said – ‘ Rajan! Thank you for your kind welcome! But it is the duty of the messenger that until his work is done, he should not eat at the other party’s place.
Duryodhana felt bad; But after restraining himself, he said – You are a messenger, this thing has to be seen behind. You are our respected relative. We have tried to serve whatever we can. Why are you refusing to welcome us?’
Now Shri Krishna Chandra has told clearly – ‘ Rajan! One who is dying of hunger can eat wherever he wants; But the one who is not like this, he eats at another house only when there is love for him there. I am not dying of hunger and love is not in you.’
Dwarkanath’s chariot turned towards Vidur’s house. They didn’t even look towards the hall of misrule that was decorated for them.
