स्वतन्त्रताका मूल्य

एक चाँदनी रातमें दैवयोगसे एक भेड़ियेको एक अत्यन्त मोटे-ताजे कुत्तेसे भेंट हो गयी। प्राथमिक शिष्टाचारके बाद भेड़ियेने कहा- ‘मित्र! यह कैसी बात है कि तुम स्वयं तो खा-पीकर इतने मोटे-ताजे हो गये हो और इधर मैं रात-दिन भोजनके अभावमें मर रहा हूँ, बड़ी कठिनाई से इस दुर्बल शरीरमें मेरे प्राणमात्र अब शेष रह गये हैं।’

कुत्तेने कहा- ‘ठीक तो है, तुम भी हमारे जैसे मोटे-ताजे बन सकते हो, बस, आवश्यकता इस बातकी है कि तुम भी मेरा अनुकरण करो।’

भेड़ियेने कहा- ‘वह क्या ?’

‘बस, केवल मेरे मालिकके घरकी रखवाली करना और रातमें चोरोंको समीप न आने देना।’ कुत्ता बोला। ‘सब प्रकारसे सोलहों आने जी लगाकर करूँगा

आजकल मेरे दिन बड़े दुःखसे बीत रहे हैं। एक तो जंगलका वातावरण, दूसरे असह्य हिमपात, घोर वर्षा जीवन-धारण कठिन हो रहा है सो सिरपर गरम छत और भरपेट भोजन, मैं समझता हूँ, यह परिवर्तन कोई बुरा तो नहीं दीखता।’ भेड़िया बोला।

‘बिलकुल ठीक। बस, तो अब आपको कुछकरना नहीं है। आप चुपचाप मेरे पीछे-पीछे चलते आइये।’ कुत्ता बोला।

इस प्रकार जब दोनों धीरे-धीरे चले जा रहे थे. तबतक भेड़ियेका ध्यान कुत्तेकी गर्दनपर पड़े हुए एक दागकी तरफ गया। इस विचित्र चिह्नको देखकर उसे इतना कुतूहल हुआ कि वह किसी प्रकार अपनेको रोक न सका और पूछ बैठा कि वह उसका कैसा चिह्न है ? कुत्तेने कहा- ‘यह कुछ नहीं है।’

भेड़ियेने कहा- ‘तो भी कृपाकर बतलाओ तो सही।’ कुत्ता बोला- ‘मालूम होता है तुम बन्धनकी पट्टीकी बात कर रहे हो, जिसमें मेरी सिकड़ी लगी रहती है।’ ‘तो इसका अर्थ है कि तुम्हें यथेच्छ घूमने फिरनेकी स्वतन्त्रता नहीं है।’ भेड़िया चकित होकर चिल्ला पड़ा।

‘प्रायः नहीं; क्योंकि मैं देखनेमें भयानक हूँ ही। इसलिये दिनमें तो लोग मुझे बाँध रखते हैं और रात में खुला छोड़ देते हैं। पर मैं तुम्हें विश्वास दिलाता हूँ, मेरा मालिक मुझे अपने जैसा ही भोजन देता है। वह मुझे बड़ा प्यार करता है। परंतु भाई यह क्या!तुम चले कहाँ ?’

‘बस! नमस्कार! तुम्हारा यह भोजन तुम्हें ही मुबारक हो। मेरी आजादीके सामने यह जंगलका सूखा छिलका एक परवश सम्राट्के उपभोगोंसे भी कहींबढ़ा-चढ़ा है। मैं तो इस लोह – शृङ्खलाको उस मूल्यपर भी न स्वीकार करूँगा।’ – A dry crust with liberty against a king’s luxury with a chain.

These days my days are passing with great sadness. Firstly, the environment of the forest, secondly, the unbearable snow, the heavy rains are making it difficult to live, so warm roof on the head and plenty of food, I think, this change does not look bad.’ The wolf spoke.
‘All right. That’s it, now you don’t have to do anything. You follow me silently.’ The dog spoke.
Thus when both were slowly leaving. Till then the wolf’s attention went towards a stain lying on the dog’s neck. Seeing this strange sign, he was so curious that he could not stop himself and asked what kind of sign it was? The dog said – ‘It is nothing.’
The wolf said – ‘Even then please tell me, it is right.’ The dog said – ‘It seems that you are talking about the bandage, in which my necklace is attached.’ ‘So it means that you do not have the freedom to move around as you please.’ The wolf shouted in astonishment.
‘not often; Because I am terrible to look at. That’s why people keep me tied up during the day and leave me free at night. But I assure you, my boss gives me the same food as himself. He loves me a lot. But brother what is this! Where have you gone?
