पूर्वकालमें काश्यप नामक एक बड़ा तपस्वी और संयमी ऋषिपुत्र था। उसे किसी धनमदान्ध वैश्यने अपने रथके धक्केसे गिरा दिया। गिरने से काश्यप बड़ा दुखी हुआ और क्रोधवश आपेसे बाहर होकर कहने लगा-‘दुनियामें निर्धनका जीना व्यर्थ है, अतः अब मैं आत्मघात कर लूँगा।’
उसे इस प्रकार क्षुब्ध देखकर इन्द्र उसके पास गीदड़का रूप धारण करके आये और बोले, ‘मुनिवर ! मनुष्य शरीर पानेके लिये तो सभी जीव उत्सुक रहते हैं। उसमें भी ब्राह्मणत्वका तो कुछ कहना ही नहीं। आप मनुष्य हैं, ब्राह्मण हैं और शास्त्रज्ञ भी हैं। ऐसा दुर्लभ शरीर पाकर उसे यों ही नष्ट कर देना, आत्मघात कर लेना भला, कहाँकी बुद्धिमानी है। अजी! जिन्हें भगवान् ने हाथ दिये हैं उनके तो मानो सभी मनोरथ सिद्ध हो गये। इस समय आपको जैसे धनकी लालसा है, उसी प्रकार मैं तो केवल हाथ पानेके लिये उत्सुक हूँ। मेरी दृष्टिमें हाथ पानेसे बढ़कर संसारमें कोई लाभ नहीं है। देखिये, मेरे शरीरमें काँटे चुभे हैं; किंतु हाथ न होनेसे मैं उन्हें निकाल नहीं सकता। किंतु जिन्हें भगवान्से हाथ मिले हैं, उनका क्या कहना? वे वर्षा, शीत, धूपसे अपना कष्ट निवारण कर सकते हैं। जोदुःख बिना हाथके दीन, दुर्बल और मूक प्राणी सहते हैं, सौभाग्यवश, वे तो आपको नहीं सहन करने पड़ते। भगवान्की बड़ी दया समझिये कि आप गीदड़, कीड़ा, चूहा साँप या मेढक आदि किसी दूसरी योनिमें नहीं उत्पन्न हुए।
‘काश्यप! आत्महत्या करना बड़ा पाप है। यही सोचकर मैं वैसा नहीं कर रहा हूँ: अन्यथा देखिये, मुझे ये कीड़े काट रहे हैं, किंतु हाथ न होनेसे मैं इनसे अपनी रक्षा नहीं कर सकता। आप मेरी बात मानिये, आपको वेदोक्त कर्मका वास्तविक फल मिलेगा। आप सावधानीसे स्वाध्याय और अग्निहोत्र कीजिये। सत्य बोलिये, इन्द्रियोंको अपने काबूमें रखिये, दान दीजिये, किसीसे स्पर्धा न कीजिये। विप्रवर! यह शृगालयोनि मेरे कुकर्मोंका परिणाम है। मैं तो रात-दिन अब कोई ऐसी साधना करना चाहता हूँ जिससे किसी प्रकार आप जैसी मनुष्ययोनि प्राप्त हो सके।’
काश्यपको मानवदेहकी महत्ताका ज्ञान हो गया। उसे यह भी भान हुआ कि यह कोई प्राकृत श्रृंगाल नहीं, अपितु शृगाल- वेशमें शचीपति इन्द्र ही हैं। उसने उनकी पूजा की और उनकी आज्ञा पाकर घर लौट आया l

In the past, there was a great ascetic and restrained Rishiputra named Kashyap. Some wealthy Vaishya made him fall from the push of his chariot. Kashyap was very sad due to the fall and got out of his anger and said – ‘It is futile for the poor to live in this world, so now I will commit suicide.’
Seeing him upset like this, Indra came to him in the form of a jackal and said, ‘Munivar! All living beings are eager to get a human body. There is nothing to say about Brahminism in that too. You are a human being, a Brahmin and also a scientist. Having got such a rare body, to destroy it just like that, it is better to commit suicide, how wise is it. Aji! To whom God has given hands, believe that all their wishes have been fulfilled. At this time, as you have a longing for money, in the same way I am only eager to get a hand. In my view, there is no greater benefit in the world than getting a hand. Look, my body is pierced by thorns; But I can’t take them out because I don’t have hands. But what to say about those who have got the hands of God? They can relieve their suffering from rain, cold, sunlight. The sorrows that poor, weak and dumb creatures suffer without hands, fortunately, you do not have to bear them. Consider it God’s great mercy that you were not born in any other form like jackal, worm, rat, snake or frog etc.
‘Kashyap! Committing suicide is a big sin. I am not doing it thinking this: otherwise see, these insects are biting me, but I cannot protect myself from them because of not having hands. You listen to me, you will get the real result of Vedokta Karma. You should do self-study and Agnihotra carefully. Speak the truth, control your senses, give charity, do not compete with anyone. Vipravar! This Shrigalayoni is the result of my misdeeds. Now day and night I want to do such a meditation, so that somehow I can get a human form like yours.’
Kashyap got the knowledge of the importance of human body. He also realized that this is not a Prakrit Shringal, but Shringal – it is Sachipati Indra in disguise. He worshiped him and after getting his permission returned home.
