प्रलोभनसे अविचलित रहनेका गौरव-बोध
सौराष्ट्रके एक छोटे से राज्यकी पुराने जमानेकी बात है। बन्दरगाहके अधिकारके विषयमें अंग्रेजोंके साथ एक शर्तनामा तैयार करना था और इस कामके ● लिये सरकारी कर्मचारी उस राज्यमें आया था। दीवानको राज्यके हितके लिये उसमें कुछ छूट करानी थी। इसलिये उसने उस कर्मचारीको ललचानेकी चेष्टा की और कहा- ‘इतना काम आप कर दें तो मैं इसके बदले दस हजार रुपये आपको दूँगा।’ उस कर्मचारीने निषेधात्मक सिर हिलाया। दीवानने बीस हजार देनेके लिये कहा, उसपर भी वह कर्मचारी राजी न हुआ। बीसकी पचास हजार लिये तैयार होनेपर भी कोई फल न निकला। दीवानको तो किसी तरह काम था। इसलिये उसने एक-मुश्त एक लाख देनेके लिये कहा। दीवानके मनमें आया कि अब तो वह कर्मचारी अवश्य झुकेगा और अपना काम बन जायगा, परंतु उस कर्मचारीने दृढ़तापूर्वक नकारात्मक ही उत्तर दिया। दीवानके क्रोधका पार न रहा और वह गरजकर बोला ‘साहब! इतना देनेवाला आपको कोई न मिलेगा, यह याद रखियेगा और फिर जैसी मर्जी हो, वैसा कीजियेगा।’ उत्तर देते हुए उस कर्मचारीने शान्तिसे कहा- ‘दीवान साहब! इतनी बड़ी रकम देनेवाले आप तो मुझे मिल ही गये। बल्कि कुछ और माँगें तो वह भी आप मुझे दे सकते हैं, ऐसा मैं समझता हूँ, परंतु लिख रखिये कि अपनी टेक रखनेमें इतनी बड़ी रकमको इतने बड़े प्रलोभनको ठोकर मारनेवाला भी आपको दूसरा कोई न मिलेगा।’ [ स्वामी श्रीचिदानन्दजी सरस्वती, सिहोरवाले]
pride in being unmoved by temptation
It is a matter of olden times of a small state of Saurashtra. A treaty had to be prepared with the British regarding the rights of the port and for this purpose a government employee had come to that state. Diwan had to make some relaxation in it for the benefit of the state. That’s why he tried to tempt that employee and said- ‘If you do this much work, I will give you ten thousand rupees in return.’ The employee shook his head in denial. Dewan asked to give twenty thousand, but even that employee did not agree. Even after getting ready for twenty fifty thousand, no fruit came out. Diwanko had some work to do. That’s why he asked to give one lakh at once. Diwan thought that now that employee would definitely bow down and get his work done, but that employee replied firmly in the negative. There was no limit to the anger of the diwan and he roared and said ‘Sir! You will not find anyone who will give you this much, remember this and then do whatever you want.’ Answering that employee said calmly – ‘ Mr. Diwan! I have found you who gave such a huge amount. Rather, if I ask for something else, you can give me that too, I understand, but keep it in writing that you will not find anyone else who will stumble upon such a big temptation and such a huge amount of money.’ [Swami Shrichidanandji Saraswati, Sihorwale]
