भगवान्को पानेकी योग्यता
श्रीलालाबाबूका असली नाम था श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र सिंह। उनके पिता प्राणकृष्णके पास बड़ी जमींदारी थी 1 और वे पूर्वी भारतके सबसे बड़े धनी-मानी व्यक्ति थे। बचपनसे ही वे किसीका दुःख नहीं देख सकते थे। एक बार एक धीवरकी कन्या अपने बाबाको कह रही थी ‘बाबा! उठो दिन शेष हय गलो।’ उसे सुनकर श्रीलालाबाबूको वैराग्य हो गया। वे अपने परिवारको कलकत्तामें छोड़कर संन्यासी हो गये और वृन्दावनमें रहने लगे। उन्होंने ब्रजमण्डलके चौहत्तर परगने खरीदकर उनकी आयसे भग्न मन्दिरोंकी मरम्मत, नये मन्दिर और धर्मशालाओंका निर्माण और स्थान-स्थानपर देव-सेवाकी सुव्यवस्था करनेकी एक विराट् योजना बनायी। वृन्दावनमें एक विशाल सुरम्य मन्दिर बनवाया। वे स्वयं कंगाल वैष्णवकी तरह जीवनयापन करते रहे।
लालाबाबूने ब्रजके सभी तीर्थोंका दर्शन किया तथा गोवर्धनमें एक छोटी-सी गुफामें रहने लगे। वे नित्य प्रातः गोवर्धनकी परिक्रमा करते। दिनभर भजन करते तथा संध्याके समय एकार मधुकरीको जाते थे। मथुराके सिद्ध महात्मा कृष्णदास बाबाजी उन दिनों वहाँ विद्यमान थे। लालाबाबूने उनका शिष्य बनना चाहा, तब बाबाजीने कहा कि ‘अभी समय नहीं आया है। उपयुक्त समय आनेपर ही मैं तुम्हें दीक्षा दूँगा। तुम्हारे विषयी जीवनके सूक्ष्म संस्कार अभी
शेष हैं।’
रंगजीके विशाल मन्दिरके निर्माता सेठ लक्ष्मीचन्दजी, लालाबाबूके प्रतिद्वन्द्वी थे। मन्दिर निर्माण, साधु- वैष्णवोंकी सेवा और दान-दक्षिणा आदिमें दोनोंमें होड़ लगी रहती थी। पहले दोनोंके बीच जमीन जायदादको लेकर एक मुकदमा भी चल चुका था। सेठजीके प्रति लालाबाबूके मनमें सूक्ष्म रूपसे द्वेष अब भी बना हुआ था। एक दिन रंगजीके मन्दिरमें लालाबाबू स्वयं सेठजीके द्वारपर भिक्षाके लिये गये। सेठजीको यह जानकर अतीव आश्चर्य हुआ। सेठजीने लालाबाबूको बाँहोंमें भर लिया। दोनोंकी आँखें प्रेमाश्रुओंसे भींग गर्यो।
फिर महात्मा कृष्णदासने स्वयं उन्हें आकर दीक्षा दी। उन्होंने लालाबाबूको गोवर्धनमें एक गुफामें रहकर भजन करनेको कहा। गुरुकी आज्ञाके अनुसार भजन करते-करते कई वर्ष बाद उन्हें अपने इष्टदेवके दर्शन हुए।
उनका कहना था कि यदि भगवान्को पाना चाहते हैं तो केवल दीक्षासे कुछ नहीं होता। दोनों हाथ बढ़ाने होंगे। एक हाथसे संसारको पकड़े रहकर दूसरा हाथ उनकी ओर बढ़ानेपर भी उनके चरणोंकी प्राप्ति नहीं होगी। भगवान्को पानेके लिये तो दोनों ही हाथ बढ़ाने होंगे।

Shrilalababu’s real name was Shrikrishna Chandra Singh. His father Prankrishna had a large zamindari 1 and was one of the richest men in eastern India. Since childhood, he could not see anyone’s sorrow. Once a fisherman’s daughter was saying to her Baba, ‘ Baba! Wake up, sing the rest of the day.’ Hearing that, Srilalababhu became disinterested. He left his family in Calcutta and became a monk and started living in Vrindavan. He made a grand plan by buying seventy-four parganas of Brajmandal to repair broken temples, build new temples and dharamshalas, and to make arrangements for God-service at every place. A huge picturesque temple was built in Vrindavan. He himself continued to live like a poor Vaishnava.
Lalababu visited all the holy places of Braj and started living in a small cave in Govardhan. He used to circumambulate Govardhan every morning. He used to do bhajan throughout the day and used to go to Madhukari in the evening. Siddha Mahatma Krishnadas Babaji of Mathura was present there in those days. Lalababu wanted to become his disciple, then Babaji said that ‘the time has not yet come’. I will initiate you when the right time comes. the subtle rites of your sexual life now

Seth Laxmichandji, the builder of the huge temple of Rangji, was a rival of Lalababu. There used to be competition between the two in the construction of the temple, the service of the sages and Vaishnavas, and charity and dakshina etc. Earlier, a case was also going on between the two regarding the land property. Lalababu’s hatred towards Sethji was still there in a subtle way. One day in Rangji’s temple, Lalababu himself went to Sethji’s door for alms. Sethji was very surprised to know this. Sethji took Lalababu in his arms. The eyes of both were wet with tears of love.
Then Mahatma Krishnadas himself came and initiated him. He asked Lalababu to stay in a cave in Govardhan and perform bhajans. After many years, he got the darshan of his presiding deity while performing bhajans as per the orders of the Guru.
He used to say that if you want to attain God, nothing is done by initiation alone. Both hands have to be raised. While holding the world with one hand and extending the other hand towards him, his feet will not be attained. To get God, both the hands have to be extended.
