मनुष्यका चरित्र
किसी जिज्ञासुने एक ज्ञानीसे पूछा-‘हर मनुष्यकी बनावट तो एक जैसी होती है, फिर कुछ लोग पतनके गर्त में क्यों डूब जाते हैं ?’ ज्ञानीने उसे अगले दिन एक तालाबके पास आनेको कहा। जिज्ञासु नियत समयपर वहाँ पहुँच गया। ज्ञानी वहाँ दोनों हाथोंमें एक-एक कमण्डलु लिये मौजूद था। उसने दोनों कमण्डलु जिज्ञासुको दिखाये। एक कमण्डलु तो ठीक था, पर दूसरेके पेंदेमें छेद था। ज्ञानीने पहले कमण्डलुको तालाबमें फेंका। वह पानी में तैरने लगा। फिर उसने दूसरा कमण्डलु फेंका। वह कुछ देर तो तैरा, पर जैसे-जैसे उसमें पेंदेके छेदसे पानी भरता गया, वह डूबता गया और तालाबमें विलीन हो गया।
ज्ञानीने जिज्ञासुसे पूछा- ‘बताओ, दोनों कमण्डलुओंकी भिन्न-भिन्न दशा क्यों हुई ?’ जिज्ञासुने सहज भावसे बता दिया कि एक कमण्डलुमें छिद्रके होने तथा दूसरेमें न होनेके कारण दोनोंकी दशाएँ अलग-अलग हैं। इसपर ज्ञानीने कहा-‘यदि इसकी तुलना मनुष्यसे करो, तो तुम्हें पता चलेगा कि आदमीमें भी दोषरूपी अनेक छिद्र होते हैं। इन्हीं छिद्रोंसे दुष्प्रवृत्तियाँ उसके भीतर घुस जाती हैं और उसका पतन हो जाता है। जिनमें ये छिद्र नहीं होते, वे इन दुष्प्रवृत्तियोंसे दूर रहते हुए भवसागर पार कर जाते हैं। लोग बाहरसे एक जैसे दीखते हैं, पर उनके चरित्र अलग-अलग होते हैं।’
चरित्रपर ही निर्भर है उन्नति या अवनति ।

An inquisitive person asked a wise man – ‘The structure of every human being is the same, then why do some people drown in the pit of downfall?’ The wise man asked him to come to a pond the next day. The curious reached there at the appointed time. The wise man was present there with a kamandalu in each hand. He showed both the kamandalus to the curious. One kamandalu was fine, but the other had a hole in its bottom. The wise man first threw the kamandalu into the pond. He started swimming in the water. Then he threw another kamandalu. He swam for some time, but as water kept filling him through the hole in the bottom, he kept sinking and merged into the pond.
The wise asked the curious – ‘Tell me, why did both the Kamandalus have different conditions?’ The inquisitor told instinctively that due to the presence of holes in one kamandalu and absence of holes in the other, the conditions of both are different. On this the wise man said- ‘If you compare him with a man, you will come to know that even a man has many holes in the form of defects. Through these holes, vices enter inside him and he downfalls. Those who do not have these holes, they cross the Bhavsagar while staying away from these bad tendencies. People look alike from outside, but their characters are different.’
Progress or degradation depends on the character.
