A monk was taking a bath in the Ganges in Sri Vishwanathpuri, Varanasi. Suddenly his vision fell on a scorpion flowing in the current. The sage took pity on him and lifted him on his hand. The scorpion remained a scorpion, water fell down its back and it used its fierce sting. Due to the sting in the hand, the hand trembled and the scorpion again fell into the water.
Terrible pain had started in the hand of the monk; But he bent forward and picked up that scorpion on his hand and started coming out of the water. The scorpion stung again, the hand trembled again and the scorpion again fell into the water from the hand. The sages went ahead in the water to pick him up.
Other people were taking bath nearby. The sages used to pick up the scorpion again and again and again and again it used to sting their hands. People got attracted towards this scene. Someone said-‘ This evil creature is worth killing anyway. It is dying because of its own wickedness, so why do you make futile efforts to save it? Let him die.’
Taking the scorpion on his hand, the monk said – ‘If this small creature does not give up its nature of stinging, then how can I, being a human being, give up my nature of kindness. If humanity is superior to animalism, then my humanity will definitely win over its animalism.’
Humanity than animalism, kindness than cruelty, sattva guna than tamo guna is superior, it is stronger, this is beyond doubt. Sage Daya had to win. The scorpion straightened its sting this time. He became as calm as if he did not know how to sting. – Su 0 Sin 0
