मृत्यु तो सृष्टिका अनिवार्य सत्य है
एक समयकी बात है, भगवान् बुद्ध श्रावस्ती नगरीमें ठहरे हुए थे। उनकी सायंकालीन सभा चल रही थी। भगवान् बुद्ध सांसारिक कष्टोंसे मुक्तिके साधनरूप धर्मपथका विवेचन कर रहे थे, सहसा वहाँ एक महिला रोते हुए आयी और उनके चरणोंमें गिरकर निवेदन करने लगी- ‘हे प्रभु! मेरे एकमात्र पुत्रको मृत्युने मुझसे छीन लिया, आप आशीर्वाद दे देंगे तो उसे जीवन मिल जायगा। आप कृपा करके उसे जीवित कर दें, मैं आपके चरणोंमें पड़ी उसके प्राणोंकी भीख माँगती हूँ।’ भगवान् बुद्धने उस महिलासे कहा- ‘माँ ! आप चिन्ता न करें, मैं आपके पुत्रको जीवन अवश्य दूंगा। परंतु उसके लिये आपको भिक्षामें उस घरसे सरसोंके दाने माँगकर लाने होंगे, जिस घरमें कभी भी मृत्युने पग न धरे हों।’
वह महिला भगवान् बुद्धके आश्वासनसे इतनी विभोर हो उठी कि भगवान्के कथनका मर्म समझे बिना भिक्षाटनपर निकल पड़ी। उसने नगरके हर घरका द्वार खटखटा डाला, उसमें अनेकों उसकी पुकारपर सरसोंक दाने देनेको तत्पर भी हो गये, परंतु ऐसा घर एक भी न मिला, जहाँ किसी सदस्यकी मृत्यु न हुई हो। यह स्थिति देखकर उस महिलाको आभास हुआ कि ‘मृत्यु तो सृष्टिका अनिवार्य सत्य है’ यह ज्ञान होते ही वह तुरंत भगवान् बुद्धके पास आकर उनके चरणोंसे लिपटकर कहने लगी- ‘हे प्रभु! मुझे जीवनकी अमरताका नहीं, जीवन-लक्ष्यकी प्राप्तिका मार्ग बतायें, वही ज्ञान शाश्वत है।’ यह सुनकर भगवान् बुद्ध उस महिलासे करुणाभरे स्वरमें कहने लगे, ‘हे पुत्री ! मुझे तुम्हारे दुःखका पूर्ण ज्ञान है, परंतु इससे मुक्तिका मार्ग केवल जीवनको सार्थक बनाना है।’ भगवान्के श्रीमुखसे ऐसे वचन सुन पूर्णतः सन्तुष्ट होकर वह महिला अपने घर लौट गयी। उसने अपने पुत्रके मृत शरीरका अग्नि-संस्कार किया। तत्पश्चात् वह गृहत्यागकर भगवान् बुद्धके शरणापन्न हो गयी। ‘किसा गौतमी’ नामसे उसकी प्रसिद्धि हुई। उसने धर्मज्ञान प्राप्त किया और उस अर्हत् पदपर पहुँची, जिसे विरले साधक ही प्राप्त करते हैं।

Death is the essential truth of creation
Once upon a time, Lord Buddha was staying in the city of Shravasti. Their evening meeting was going on. Lord Buddha was discussing the path of religion as a means of freedom from worldly sufferings, suddenly a woman came there crying and fell at his feet and started pleading – ‘O Lord! Death has snatched my only son from me, if you bless me then he will get life. Please make him alive, I beg for his life lying at your feet.’ Lord Buddha said to that woman – ‘ Mother! Don’t worry, I will definitely give life to your son. But for that you will have to beg for mustard seeds from a house where death has never set foot.’
That woman was so enraptured by Lord Buddha’s assurance that without understanding the meaning of Lord Buddha’s statement, she went out on alms. He knocked on the door of every house in the city, many of them were ready to give mustard seeds on his call, but not a single house was found where no member had died. Seeing this situation, that woman realized that ‘death is an essential truth of creation’, as soon as she got this knowledge, she immediately came to Lord Buddha and hugged his feet and said – ‘O Lord! Show me the way to achieve the goal of life, not the immortality of life, that knowledge is eternal.’ Hearing this, Lord Buddha started saying to that woman in a compassionate voice, ‘O daughter! I have full knowledge of your sorrow, but the only way to get rid of it is to make life meaningful.’ Fully satisfied after hearing such words from the Lord’s mouth, the woman returned to her home. He cremated the dead body of his son. After that she left home and took refuge in Lord Buddha. She became famous by the name ‘Kisa Gautami’. He attained the knowledge of Dharma and reached that arhat position, which is attained only by rare seekers.
