मिश्र देशके प्रसिद्ध संत सेरापियोकी त्याग वृत्ति उच्च कोटिकी थी। चौथी शताब्दीके संत-साहित्यमें उनका नाम अमित प्रसिद्ध है। वे सदा मोटे कपड़ेका चोगा पहनते थे और समय- समयपर दीन-दुखियोंकी सहायताके लिये उसे बेच दिया करते थे। कभी-कभी तो आवश्यकता पड़नेपर अपने-आपको भी निश्चित अवधिके लिये बेचकर गरीबोंको आर्थिक सहायता देते थे।
एक समय उनकी अपने घनिष्ठ मित्रसे भेंट हुई। वह उनको बिलकुल फटे हाल देखकर आश्चर्यचकित हो गया।
‘भाई! आपको नंगा और भूखा रहनेके लिये कौन विवश कर दिया करता है?’ मित्रने पूछा।
‘यह बात पूछनेकी नहीं, समझनेकी है। गरीब और असहाय लोगोंकी आवश्यकताको देखकर मैं अपने आपको नहीं सम्हाल पाता। मेरी धर्म पुस्तकका आदेशहै कि दीन-दुखियोंकी सेवाके लिये अपनी सारी वस्तुएँ बेच डालो। मैंने भगवान्की आज्ञाके पालनको ही अपने जीवनका उद्देश्य बनाया है।’ संतने मित्रका समाधान किया।
‘पर आपकी वह धर्म-पुस्तक कहाँ है ?’ मित्रका प्रश्न था।
‘मैंने असहायोंकी आवश्यकताके लिये उसे भी बेच दिया है। जो पुस्तक परसेवाके लिये सारे सामान बेच देनेका आदेश देती है, समय पड़नेपर उसको भी बेचा जा सकता है। इससे दो लाभ हैं; पहला तो यह है कि जिसके हाथमें ऐसी दिव्य पुस्तक पड़ेगी, वह धन्य हो जायगा, उसकी त्याग-वृत्ति निखर उठेगी; और दूसरा यह कि पुस्तकके बदलेमें जो पैसे मिलेंगे, उनसे असहायों और दुखियों तथा अभावग्रस्त व्यक्तियोंकी ठीक-ठीक सेवा हो सकेगी।’ सेरापियोने सरलता और विनम्रतासे उत्तर दिया।

The renunciation instinct of the famous Saint Serapio of Egypt was of high quality. His name Amit is famous in the saint literature of the fourth century. He always used to wear a thick cloth robe and used to sell it from time to time to help the poor. Sometimes, if needed, he used to sell himself for a certain period and give financial help to the poor.
Once he met his close friend. He was surprised to see her in such a dilapidated condition.
‘Brother! Who forces you to remain naked and hungry?’ Friend asked.
‘ This is not a question to be asked, it is to be understood. Seeing the need of poor and helpless people, I could not support myself. My religious book orders that you sell all your things for the service of the poor. I have made obeying God’s orders the aim of my life.’ The saint resolved the friend.
‘But where is that religious book of yours?’ Friend had a question.
‘I have sold it also for the need of the helpless. The book which orders to sell all the goods for service, can also be sold when the time comes. This has two benefits; The first is that the one who will have such a divine book in his hand, he will be blessed, his renunciation instinct will flourish; And the second is that the money that will be received in exchange for the book, will be able to serve the helpless and the sad and needy people properly. Serapione replied simply and politely.
