आपसकी कलहसे तीसरेका लाभ होता है
सिंहनगरके राजकुमारका नाम चन्दन था। उसके पेटके अन्दर एक सौंप रहता था। राजकुमार जो भी खाता-पीता, उसके बलपर सौंप दिन-पर-दिन पुष्ट होता जाता और राजकुमार निर्बल।
एक दिन जब राजकुमार सो रहा था, तब उसका मुँह खुला रह गया था। साँपको मौका मिल गया, उसने स्वच्छ हवा लेनेके लिये अपना फन बाहर निकालकर खूब गहरी गहरी साँसें लीं। जब वह गहरी साँसें खींच रहा था, तभी उसकी दृष्टि सामनेकी दीवालपर चली गयी, जहाँ एक साँप और बैठा था। दोनोंकी आँखें एक-दूसरेसे टकरा गर्यो। बस, फिर क्या था।
बिलवाले सौंपको पेटमें घुसे साँपपर बहुत गुस्सा आया। वह वहाँसे पेटमें घुसे सौंपको धिक्कारते हुए बोला-‘अब समझा, राजकुमार चन्दन दिन-पर-दिन दुबले क्यों होते चले जा रहे हैं? तू इनके पेटसे निकल क्यों नहीं जाता ? बाहर निकल और मेहनत करके खा मुफ्तका खा-खाकर अजगर बनता जा रहा है किसी दिन यदि राजकुमारको किसीने कौंजी पिला
दी, तो तेरा उसी दिन राम नाम सत्य हो जायगा, मेरी सलाह मान ले और फौरन इसके पेटसे भाग जा।’
अपने मर्मका उद्घाटन सुन पेटवाला साँप भला चुप बैठा रहता ? वह भी फुफकारकर बोला- ‘तू कैसे मुझसे बेकारमें जलता है, अपनी ओर देख, तू कौन-सा दूधका धोया हुआ है। बरसोंसे राजकुमारका धन दबाये बैठा है। जो तेरे सिरपर किसीने उबलता तेल डाल दिया तो मैं तो महीनोंमें, पर तू तो मिनटोंमें ही मर जायगा।’ दोनों साँप कहा-सुनी करके अपने-अपने स्थानको चले गये।
इस परस्पर रहस्य-उद्घाटनको राजकुमारकी पत्नी मालविका सुन रही थी। उसने उसी दिन काँजी बनवायी और अपने पतिको स्वस्थ कर लिया। दूसरे दिन तेल खौलाकर दीवालके छेदमें डलवा दिया और सारा धन निकलवा लिया। इस प्रकार दोनों साँपोंके स्वाहा होनेपर वे सुखपूर्वक रहने लगे। आपसकी कलहसे तीसरेको फायदा हो गया।
