अपने अध्ययनके दिनोंमें नेपोलियनको एक बार अक्लोनी नामक स्थानमें एक नाईके घर रहना पड़ा था। नेपोलियन बहुत सुन्दर युवक थे और उनकी आकृति सुकुमार थी। नाईकी स्त्री उनपर मुग्ध हो गयी और उन्हें अपनी ओर आकर्षित करनेके प्रयत्न करने लगी। किंतु नेपोलियनको तो अपनी पुस्तकोंसे अवकाश ही नहीं था। वह स्त्री जब उनसे हँसने बोलनेका प्रयत्न करती, तभी उन्हें किसी पुस्तकको पढ़ने में निमग्र पाती।वही नेपोलियन जब देशके प्रधान सेनापति चुने जा चुके, तब फिर उस स्थानमें एक बार गये। नाईकी स्त्री दूकानपर बैठी थी। वे उसके सामने जा खड़े हुए और बोले – ‘तुम्हारे यहाँ एक बोनापार्ट नामका युवक रहता था, कुछ स्मरण है तुम्हें उसका ?”
नाईकी स्त्री झुंझलाकर बोली- ‘रहने भी दीजिये महोदय ! ऐसे नीरस व्यक्तिकी चर्चा करना मैं नहीं चाहती। उसे न गाना आता था न नाचना । किसीसे मुँह भर मीठी बात करना तक उसने नहीं सीखा था ।पुस्तक, पुस्तक और पुस्तक – वह तो बस, पुस्तकोंका कीड़ा था। नेपोलियन हँसे -‘ठीक कहती हो देवि! संयम हीमनुष्यको महान् बनाता है। बोनापार्ट तुम्हारी रसिकतामें उलझ गया होता तो देशका प्रधान सेनापति होकर आज तुम्हारे सामने खड़ा नहीं हो सकता था । ‘ – सु0 सिं0
During his studies, Napoleon once had to live in a barber’s house in a place called Aclonie. Napoleon was a very handsome young man and had a graceful figure. The woman of the barber became infatuated with him and started trying to attract him towards her. But Napoleon had no break from his books. When that woman tried to talk to him laughingly, only then she would find him engrossed in reading a book. The same Napoleon, after being elected the country’s commander-in-chief, went to that place once again. The woman of the shoemaker was sitting at the shop. They stood in front of him and said – ‘A young man named Bonaparte used to live here, do you remember him?’
The lady of the shoe said angrily – ‘Let it be, sir! I don’t want to talk about such a boring person. He neither knew how to sing nor dance. He had not even learned to talk sweetly to anyone. Books, books and books – he was just a bookworm. Napoleon laughed – ‘You are right, lady! Self-control makes a man great. If Bonaparte had got entangled in your courtship, then he would not have been able to stand in front of you today as the Commander-in-Chief of the country. ‘ – Su0 Singh
