केवल विश्वास चाहिये

स्वामी विवेकानन्द परिव्राजकके रूपमें राजस्थानका भ्रमण करते-करते अलवर जा पहुँचे। राजाके दीवान थे मेजर रामचन्द्र वे आध्यात्मिक मनोवृत्तिके व्यक्ति थे। संतोंमें उनकी बड़ी श्रद्धा और निष्ठा थी। उन्होंने सदुपदेशके लिये स्वामीजीको अपने निवासस्थानपर आदरपूर्वक निमन्त्रित किया। दैवयोगसे अलवरनरेश महाराज मंगलसिंहजी भी सत्सङ्गमें उपस्थित थे।

‘बाबाजी! मूर्तिपूजामें मेरा तनिक भी विश्वास नहीं है। मुझे उसमें कोई सार्थकता नहीं दीखती।’ मंगलसिंहने स्वामीजीसे निवेदन किया।

‘आप मुझसे मजाक तो नहीं कर रहे हैं?’ स्वामीजी आश्चर्यचकित थे।

‘नहीं-नहीं, यह विनोद नहीं है; मेरे जीवनकी सत्यअनुभूति है।’ राजाने अपनी बात दुहरायी। ‘तो फिर इसपर थूक दो।’ स्वामीजीने उपस्थित लोगोंसे राजाके चित्रपर थूकनेका संकेत किया। दीवानकी बैठकमें मंगलसिंहका एक भव्य चित्र टँगा हुआ था लोग स्वामीजीके आदेशसे विस्मित हो उठे। राजाकी ओर देखने लगे। मंगलसिंहजीकी समझमें भी कोई बात नहीं आ सकी। स्वामीजी मौन थे ।

‘हमलोग ऐसा किस तरह कर सकते हैं, यह हमारे राजाका चित्र है।’ लोगोंका उत्तर था।

स्वामीजीने दीवानको भी आदेश दिया, पर उसने भी असमर्थता प्रकट की।

‘राजा साहब! आपमें इन लोगोंकी श्रद्धा है, आप इनके इष्ट हैं; इसलिये आपके चित्रपर ये लोग किसीभी स्थिति में नहीं थूक सकते। यह निश्चित है कि आप यह चित्र नहीं हैं; पर यह भी सच है कि इस चित्रमें लोगोंको आप उपस्थित दीख पड़ते हैं। ठीक यही बात मूर्तिके सम्बन्धमें है। मूर्ति पूजा वे ही लोग करते हैं, जिनकी उसमें इष्टभावना है। इस प्रकार घट-घटमें व्यापक सबके इष्ट भगवान् मूर्तिमें विद्यमान हैं, इस सत्यको समझनेके लिये केवल विश्वास चाहिये।’स्वामीजीने मूर्तिपूजाकी सार्थकता सिद्ध की।

राजा मंगलसिंह स्वामीजीके पैरोंपर गिर पड़े। ‘आपने मेरा संशय नष्ट कर दिया। मेरे हृदयमें विश्वासका दीप जलाकर आपने मुझे शाश्वत सत्यका दर्शन करा दिया।’ राजकीय ऐश्वर्यने वैराग्यकी अभिवन्दना की। राजा मंगलसिंहजीकी श्रद्धा स्वामी विवेकानन्दके चरणोंमें स्थिर हो गयी।

Swami Vivekananda reached Alwar while visiting Rajasthan as a Parivrajak. Major Ramchandra was the king’s diwan, he was a person of spiritual attitude. He had great faith and loyalty in the saints. He respectfully invited Swamiji to his residence for Sadupadesh. Fortunately, Alvarnaresh Maharaj Mangalsinhji was also present in the satsang.
‘Babaji! I do not believe in idol worship at all. I do not see any significance in that. Mangal Singh requested Swamiji.
‘You’re kidding me, are you?’ Swamiji was surprised.
‘No-no, it’s not a joke; This is the true experience of my life. The king repeated his words. ‘Then spit on it.’ Swamiji indicated to the people present to spit on the picture of the king. A grand picture of Mangal Singh was hanging in the Diwan’s meeting. People were amazed by Swamiji’s order. Started looking towards the king. Even Mangalsinhji could not understand anything. Swamiji was silent.
‘How can we do this, this is the portrait of our king.’ The answer was people.
Swamiji also ordered the Diwan, but he also expressed his inability.
‘Honourable King! You are revered by these people, you are their favorite; That’s why these people cannot spit on your picture under any circumstances. It is certain that you are not this picture; But it is also true that people see you present in this picture. Exactly the same thing is in relation to idols. Idol worship is done only by those people, who have favor in it. In this way, everyone’s favorite God is present in the idol, to understand this truth only faith is needed. ‘Swamiji proved the significance of idol worship.
Raja Mangal Singh fell at Swamiji’s feet. You have destroyed my doubt. By lighting the lamp of faith in my heart, you made me see the eternal truth.’ State opulence greeted quietness. King Mangalsinhji’s faith became stable at the feet of Swami Vivekananda.
