रक्षामन्त्रीका पत्र
एक बार अमेरिकी सेनाके एक प्रमुख अधिकारीने रक्षामन्त्रीके आदेशको ठीकसे समझ न पानेके कारण कोई भूल कर दी। जब रक्षामन्त्रीको यह बात मालूम हुई तो वे राष्ट्रपति अब्राहम लिंकनके पास पहुँचे और गुस्सेसे काँपते हुए बोले- ‘श्रीमान् ! बहुत बड़ी गड़बड़ हो गयी है। पता नहीं अब क्या होगा।’ लिंकनके पूछनेपर रक्षामन्त्रीने उन्हें विस्तारसे पूरी कहानी सुनायी।
वे फिर क्रोधमें कहने लगे- ‘मैं उस जनरलके बच्चेको छोडूंगा नहीं। अब आप देखना, मैं कैसे उसकी खिंचाई करता हूँ। मैं अभी उसे पत्र लिखता हूँ।’ इसपर लिंकन बोले- ‘बिलकुल ठीक! आप उसे जरूर पत्र लिखिये और जितने कठोर से कठोर शब्द हो सकते हैं, उनका प्रयोग कीजिये।’
अपने नेताकी स्वीकृति मिलते ही रक्षामन्त्रीने अपने मनकी भड़ास निकालते हुए गालियोंसे भरा पत्र लिखा पत्र पूरा हो जानेपर वे राष्ट्रपति महोदयकी मेजके पास पहुँचे और विनम्रतापूर्वक बोले- ‘श्रीमान् ! एक बार आप भी पत्र देख लें।’ बिना रक्षामन्त्रीकी ओर देखे ही राष्ट्रपति लिंकनने कहा- ‘ठीक है! इस पत्रको फाड़कर फेंक दीजिये, ऐसे पत्र मनमें बसी कड़वाहट और भड़ास निकालनेके लिये ही लिखे जाते हैं। मैं भी इस तरहकी समस्या आनेपर ऐसा ही करता हूँ और जहाँतक मैं समझता हूँ कि अब आपने अपने मनकी कड़वाहट और क्रोधपर काबू पा लिया होगा।’ लिंकनकी यह बात सुनकर रक्षामन्त्री सोचनेपर मजबूर हो गये। उन्हें इस बातका अहसास हो गया कि क्रोधमें आकर कोई फैसला करना ठीक नहीं है। उन्होंने पत्र फाड़ डाला और चुपचाप चले गये।
Defense Minister’s letter
Once a major officer of the US Army made a mistake due to not understanding the order of the Defense Minister properly. When the Defense Minister came to know about this, he went to President Abraham Lincoln and said trembling with anger – ‘Sir! There is a big mess. Don’t know what will happen now. On asking Lincoln, the Defense Minister told him the whole story in detail.
He again started saying in anger – ‘ I will not leave that general’s child. Now you see how I pull it. I write letters to him right now.’ Lincoln said on this – ‘Absolutely right! You must write a letter to him and use the harshest words possible.’
As soon as he got the approval of his leader, the Defense Minister wrote a letter full of abuses, after completing the letter, he went to the President’s table and humbly said – ‘Sir! Once you also see the letter. Without looking at the Defense Minister, President Lincoln said – ‘Okay! Tear this letter and throw it away, such letters are written only to take out the bitterness and anger in the mind. I also do the same when I face this type of problem and as far as I understand now you must have overcome your bitterness and anger.’ Hearing this statement of Lincoln, the Defense Minister was forced to think. He realized that it is not right to take any decision in anger. He tore the letter and left silently.
