कवलासे अठारह मीलकी दूरीपर थसोस नामका एक द्वीप था। अठारह मील जलीय मार्गको पार करना कठिन कार्य था। पर अपने सत्कर्तव्य से अनुप्राणित होकर उसने उस पार पहुँचनेका निश्चय कर लिया। थसोसमें यूनानी जहाजी बेड़ा था; उन दिनों यूनान और बलगेरियामें युद्ध चल रहा था; इसलिये तुर्की मछुवाहेने इस स्थितिका सदुपयोग अपनी जन्मभूमिकी रक्षाके लिये किया।
सूर्यकी किरणें महाप्रस्थानके पथपर थीं। चारों ओरअन्धकार-ही-अन्धकार था। पीले-पीले तारे आकाशमें टिमटिमा रहे थे। शत्रुसेनाकी आँख बचाकर वह | अपनी छोटी-सी नौकापर सवार होकर थसोसके लिये चल पड़ा।
सारी रात वह नौका खेता रहा। सबेरा होते-होते वह द्वीपपर आ गया। यूनानी बेड़ेके निकट ही वह जोर-जोर से चिल्लाने लगा ‘दौड़ो, बचाओ परमात्माके नामपर हमारी जन्मभूमिकी रक्षा करो, अन्यथा बलगेरियाकी सेना कवलाको जलाकर नष्ट कर देगी।’
दिन निकलते-निकलते एक सच्चे साहसीके सत् कर्तव्यपालन और साहससे यूनानी सेनाने बलगेरियाकी सेनाको कवलासे निकाल बाहर किया। नागरिकोंने घरके दरवाजे खोल दिये; उन्होंने यूनानी नौ-सेनापतिका स्वागत किया। कवला शत्रुके हाथ नष्ट होनेसे बच गया।
कवलाके नाविकोंने यूनानी सेनापतिके स्वागतमें शोभायात्रा निकाली। शोभायात्राके पीछे-पीछे एक दुबला पतला आदमी चल रहा था, जिसकी आँखोंमें प्रसन्नताकी ज्योति थी; मनमें संतोष था कि उसने अपने नगरको बचा लिया। रा0 श्री0
