सच्ची मित्रता

सिसलीके सिराक्यूज नगरके राजा ड्योंनिसियसने है सामान्य अपराधमें डेमन नामके एक युवकको प्राणदण्डकी आज्ञा दे दी। डेमनने प्रार्थना की- ‘मुझे एक वर्षका समय दिया जाय तो ग्रीस जाकर अपनी सम्पत्ति और परिवारका प्रबन्ध करके ठीक समयपर लौट आऊँगा।’

राजाने कहा – ‘तुम्हें केवल एक शर्तपर छोड़ा जा सकता है— कोई तुम्हारी जमानत ले और वचन दे कि तुम न लौटे तो तुम्हारे स्थानपर वह फाँसीपर चढ़ेगा।’ राजाके निर्णयको सुनकर डेमनका मित्र पीथियस आगे आया। उसने डेमनकी जमानत ली। पीथियस नजरबंद किया गया और डेमन छोड़ दिया गया। दिन बीतने लगे, वर्ष पूरा होनेको आया; किंतु डेमनके लौटनेका कोई समाचार नहीं मिला। पीथियसको फाँसी पर चढ़ानेका समय आ गया। लोगोंने कहा- ‘पीथियस कितना मूर्ख है। भला प्राणदण्ड पानेके लिये कोई स्वयं उपस्थित हो सकता है।’

उधर पीथियस प्रसन्न था। उसे विश्वास था कि उसका मित्र अवश्य समयपर लौटेगा। परंतु वह सोच रहा था – ‘कितना अच्छा हो कि समुद्रमें तूफान आवे,डेमनका जहाज मार्ग भटक जाय । डेमन समयपर न पहुँचे। मेरे मित्रके प्राण बच जायँ और उसके बदले राजा मुझे फाँसी पर चढ़ा दे ।’

सचमुच डेमन निश्चित समयतक नहीं लौटा। पीथियसको प्राणदण्ड देनेकी आज्ञा हो गयी। उसे वधस्थलपर पहुँचाया गया। परंतु उसी समय हाँफता दौड़ता डेमन वधस्थलपर पहुँचा और दूरसे ही चिल्लाया ‘मैं डेमन हूँ! मेरे मित्रको फाँसी मत दो! मैं आ गया!’

डेमन चला था समयसे ही; किंतु उसका जहाज समुद्री तूफानमें पड़ गया। किसी प्रकार किनारे पहुँचकर डेमन, जो भी सवारी मिली उसीसे, दौड़ा। उसका अन्तिम घोड़ा | दौड़नेके वेगके कारण गिरकर मर गया था। डेमन कई दिनोंसे भूखा था, उसके पैरोंमें दौड़नेसे छाले पड़ गये थे। उसके बाल बिखर रहे थे। उसे एक ही धुन थी कि समयपर पहुँचकर अपने मित्रके प्राण बचा लें।

राजा इन दोनों मित्रोंका यह परस्पर प्रेम देखकर चकित हो गया। उसने डेमनका प्राणदण्ड क्षमा कर दिया और प्रार्थना करके स्वयं भी उनका मित्र बन गया। दोसे तीन सच्चे मित्र हो गये। – सु0 सिं0

King Dionysius of Syracuse city of Sicily ordered the execution of a young man named Damon for a common crime. Damon prayed- ‘If I am given one year’s time, I will go to Greece, manage my wealth and family and return at the right time.’
The king said – ‘You can be released only on one condition- someone takes your bail and promises that if you don’t return, he will be hanged in your place.’ Damon’s friend Pythias came forward after hearing the king’s decision. She bails out for Damon. Pytheas is put under house arrest and Damon is released. The days started passing, the year came to an end; But there was no news of Damon’s return. The time has come for Pythias to be hanged. People said – ‘ How foolish is Pythias. May someone present himself to receive the death sentence.’
On the other hand, Pythias was happy. He believed that his friend would definitely return on time. But he was thinking – ‘ How good it would be if there was a storm in the sea, the demon’s ship lost its way. Daemon did not reach on time. My friend’s life should be saved and instead of that the king should put me on the gallows.’
Damon didn’t really return until a certain time. It was ordered to give death sentence to Pitheus. He was taken to the place of execution. But at the same time the Daemon reached the place of execution panting and shouted from a distance ‘I am the Daemon! Don’t hang my friend! I have come!’
Damon was gone from time immemorial; But his ship got caught in a storm. Somehow reaching shore, Damon ran with whatever ride he could find. his last horse Due to the speed of running, he had fallen and died. Damon had been hungry for days, his feet were blistered from running. His hair was falling apart. He had only one tune to reach on time and save his friend’s life.
The king was surprised to see this mutual love of these two friends. He forgave Daemon’s death sentence and became his friend by praying. Two three became true friends. – Su 0 Sin 0
