सत्यके लिये त्याग

श्री अश्विनीकुमार दत्त जब हाईस्कूलमें पढ़ते थे, तब कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालयका नियम था कि सोलह वर्षसे कम अवस्थाके विद्यार्थी हाईस्कूलकी परीक्षामें नहीं बैठ सकते थे। इस परीक्षाके समय अश्विनीबाबूकी अवस्था चौदह वर्ष थी; किंतु दूसरोंकी भाँति उन्होंने भी सोलह वर्षकी अवस्था लिखायी और परीक्षामें बैठे। इस प्रकार वे मैट्रिक पास हो गये।

ठीक एक वर्ष पश्चात् एफ0 ए0 के प्रथम वर्षकी परीक्षामें उत्तीर्ण हो जानेपर अश्विनीकुमारजीको अपने आचरणमें जो असत्य दोष था, उसका भान हुआ। उन्हेंअपने असत्याचरणपर बड़ी ग्लानि हुई। अपने कालेजके प्रिन्सिपलसे उन्होंने सब बातें प्रकट करके इस असत्यके सुधारनेकी प्रार्थना की। प्रिन्सिपलने उनकी सत्यनिष्ठाकी प्रशंसा की; किंतु जो कुछ हो गया, उसे सुधारनेमें असमर्थता बतायी। अश्विनीकुमारजी विश्वविद्यालयके रजिस्ट्रारसे मिले; परंतु वहाँ भी उत्तर मिला-‘अब बात हाथसे बाहर हो गयी।’ लेकिन अश्विनीबाबूने प्रायश्चित्त किया। दो वर्ष झूठी उमर बढ़ाकर जो लाभ उठाया गया था, उसके लिये उन्होंने दो वर्ष पढ़ाई बंद रखी।

When Mr. Ashwini Kumar Dutt was studying in the High School, the University of Calcutta had a rule that students below the age of sixteen could not sit for the High School examination. Ashwinibabu was fourteen years old at the time of this examination; But like others, he also wrote the age of sixteen and sat in the examination. Thus he passed matriculation.
Exactly one year later, after passing the F.A. first year examination, Ashwini Kumarji became aware of the false fault in his conduct. He felt great remorse for his untruthfulness. He disclosed everything to the principal of his college and requested him to correct this untruth. The principal praised his integrity; But whatever happened, he told his inability to rectify it. Ashwini Kumarji met the registrar of the university; But there too the answer was received – ‘Now the matter has gone out of hand.’ But Ashwini Babu made atonement. For the benefit that was taken by increasing the false age by two years, he stopped studies for two years.
