जन-रुचि अद्भुत होती है। जनता किसी से उपकार-अपकार अधिक दिन स्मरण नहीं रखती। व्यक्ति का वर्तमान कृत्य ही जन-मन का हेतु होता है। कल तक सबसे तिरस्कृत सत्राजित सबके सहसा सम्मान्य हो गये। सत्यभामा का पाणि-ग्रहण सविधि, सोल्लास श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने किया किन्तु जब विवाह की उपहार वस्तुओं, स्वर्णराशि के साथ सत्राजित ने स्यमन्तक मणि रखी तो उसे उठाकर लौटाते हुए बोले- ‘राजन आपके आराध्य का यह प्रसाद आपके ही समीप रहना चाहिये। इससे प्रकट होने वाली स्वर्ण राशि आप अपनी पुत्री के सदन में भेजते रह सकते हैं। हम तो अब इसके फलभागी हैं ही।’
सत्राजित ने मणि रख ली। उनके दूसरी कोई सन्तान है नहीं। मणि अन्त में इसी गृह में आनी है और उससे प्रकट स्वर्णराशि स्वीकृत हो गयी। मणि की पूजा का भार सत्राजित पर रहे पर यह उन्हें अस्वीकार कहाँ है।
अपनी माता कुन्ती के साथ पाण्डु पुत्र अग्नि लगने से भस्म हो गये’ यह समाचार हस्तिनापुर से द्वारिका पहुँचा।
‘आर्य समाचार को सत्य मानकर व्यवहार करना अपनों के हित में है’ यह स्पष्ट हो चुका था कि पाण्डवों को माता-सहित वहाँ रहने को धृतराष्ट्र ने भेजा था और दुर्योधन के द्वारा वह भवन लाक्षा गया एवं अन्य ज्वलनशील पदार्थों के संयोग से बनवाया गया था। उसमें अग्नि स्वतः नहीं लगी थी, लगवायी गयी थी, यह चर्चा भी चलने लगी थी। भगवान संकर्षण का मत था कि पाण्डव मर नहीं सकते इस प्रकार किन्तु श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र ने दूसरी बात कही- ‘धृतराष्ट्र-पुत्रों को जब अपनी सफलता का विश्वास है, उन्हें संदिग्ध बना देना अच्छा नहीं होगा’
बड़े भाई तथा सात्यकि को लेकर श्रीकृष्णचन्द्र हस्तिनापुर गये। भीष्म पितामाह, कृपाचार्य, द्रोणाचार्य और देवी गान्धारी अतिशय दुःखी थे, यह उनसे मिलते ही ज्ञात हो गया। विदुर ने एकान्त में सूचित किया कि उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को संकेत से सावधान किया था किन्तु विदुर को सन्देह था। जले भवन से बहुत ही जले पाँच पुरुषों एवं एक नारी का अवशेष मिला लगता था। यह अनुमान ही था क्योंकि वे अत्यल्प अवशेष थे। जलकर भस्ममात्र बची थी उनकी। पाण्डवों को जलदान दोनों भाई द्वारिका में ही कर आये थे।
सत्यभामा से विवाह के तत्काल पश्चात यह समाचार मिला था। समाचार पहुँचा तो अन्त्येष्टि का समय व्यतीत हो चुका था। अब तो केवल शोक सहानुभूति और अस्थि चयन- क्योंकि दुर्योधन ने अस्थिचयन अनावश्यक मान लिया था। इस कार्य के लिये कोई हस्तिनापुर से कुल्यकरण ग्राम के लाक्षाभवन भेजा नहीं गया था। कहा जा रहा था कि भवन का अवशेष अभी शीतल नहीं हुआ है।
‘श्रीकृष्ण-बलराम अभी द्वारिका में नहीं है। यही अवसर है’ अक्रूर और कृतवर्मा दोनों शतधन्वा के यहाँ पहुँचे- ‘सत्राजित ने हम सबको भुलवा दिया। हमको अपनी कन्या देना अस्वीकार नहीं किया और प्रतीक्षा करने को कहकर टालता रहा। तुम्हारे साथ भी यही हुआ। वह हम लोगों का सम्बन्धी या हितैषी कैसे हो सकता है’
शतधन्वा को बहुत आशा थी कि सत्राजित उसे कन्या देगा। सत्राजित की कन्या पाने का अर्थ मणि पाना था ही क्योंकि सत्राजित के कोई और सन्तान थी नहीं। अब अपनी कन्या उसने वासुदेव को विवाह दी। इससे शतधन्वा बहुत रुष्ट था। वह सत्यभामा के विवाह में सम्मिलित नहीं हुआ था। शीघ्र उत्तेजित होने वाला, अतिशय क्रोधी, आवेश में कुछ भी कर बैठने वाला वह प्रख्यात था। ‘अब सत्राजित से बलपूर्वक मणि छीन क्यों न ली जाय?’ कृतवर्मा ने कहा- ‘अब तो बल-प्रयोग से ही मणि मिल सकती है और यही उपयुक्त अवसर है।’
‘कन्या गयी, विलम्ब करने से मणि भी पाना असम्भव होगा’ अक्रूर ने उकसाया- ‘मणि तुम्हारे पास रहे तब हमें सन्तोष होगा’
‘मैं मणि लेकर रहूँगा’ शतधन्वा उत्तेजित हो गया- ‘सत्राजित ने दूसरे को कन्या देकर मेरा अपमान किया है’ रात्रि में छिपकर वह सत्राजित के भवन में घुसा और सोते सत्राजित का वध करके मणि उठा लाया।
‘सत्राजित मार दिये गये। शतधन्वा ने मारा उन्हें मणि के लोभ से’ मूर्ख शतधन्वा ने स्वयं अक्रूर-कृतवर्मा से रात्रि में ही जाकर समाचार दिया और ऐसे समाचार को फैलते कितनी देर लगती है।
‘मेरे पिता मार दिये गये’ सत्यभामा ने सुना। वे रोती-क्रन्दन करती पितृगृह पहुँचीं। पिता का शव बड़ी तैलपूर्ण नौका में सुरक्षित किया किया और उसी समय रथ पर बैठकर हस्तिनापुर चल पड़ीं।

Public interest is wonderful. The public does not remember any favor or disservice for a long time. The present act of a person is the purpose of the public mind. Till yesterday the most despised Satrajit suddenly became respected by everyone. Satyabhama’s water-grahan ceremony was done by Shrikrishna Chandra, but when Satrajit kept the Syamantaka gem along with the wedding gift items, the gold amount, then picking it up and returning it said – ‘Rajan, this prasad of your adorable should remain near you only. You can keep sending the gold amount that appears from this to your daughter’s house. We are now its beneficiaries.
Satrajit kept the gem. He doesn’t have any other child. Ultimately, the gem has to come in this house and the amount of gold revealed by it has been accepted. The burden of worshiping Mani rests on Satrajit, but he is unable to accept it.
Pandu’s sons along with their mother Kunti were burnt to ashes by the fire’ this news reached Dwarka from Hastinapur.
‘It is in the interest of our own people to treat the Arya news as true’ It had become clear that Dhritarashtra had sent the Pandavas to live there along with their mother and the building was built by Duryodhana with the combination of Laksha Gaya and other inflammable materials. . The fire did not start on its own, it was set on fire, this discussion also started going on. Lord Sankarshana was of the opinion that the Pandavas cannot die in this way, but Shri Krishna Chandra said another thing – ‘When the sons of Dhritarashtra are sure of their success, it would not be good to make them suspicious’.
Shri Krishnachandra went to Hastinapur with his elder brother and Satyaki. Bhishma Pitamah, Kripacharya, Dronacharya and Devi Gandhari were very sad, it became known as soon as they met them. Vidura privately informed that he had warned Yudhishthira about the sign but Vidura was suspicious. The remains of five men and a woman, very charred, seemed to have been found from the burnt building. This was only a guess as they were very few remains. Only ashes were left after burning. Both the brothers had donated water to the Pandavas in Dwarka itself.
This news was received immediately after his marriage to Satyabhama. When the news reached, the time for the funeral had passed. Now only mourning sympathy and bone selection – because Duryodhana had considered bone selection unnecessary. No one was sent from Hastinapur to Lakshabhavan of Kulyakaran village for this work. It was being said that the remains of the building have not cooled down yet.
‘Shri Krishna-Balram is not in Dwarka now. This is the opportunity’ Akrur and Kritavarma both reached Shatdhanva’s place – ‘Satrajit made us all forget. He did not refuse to give his daughter to us and kept on postponing by asking to wait. Same happened with you. How can he be a relative or well wisher of us?
Shatdhanva had great hope that Satrajit would give him a daughter. Getting Satrajit’s daughter meant getting a gem because Satrajit had no other children. Now he gave his daughter in marriage to Vasudev. Shatdhanva was very angry with this. He did not attend the marriage of Satyabhama. He was famous for being quick-tempered, very angry, doing anything in a fit of rage. ‘Why not take away the gem from Satrajit by force?’ Kritavarma said- ‘Now the gem can be obtained only by force and this is the right opportunity.’
‘The girl is gone, it will be impossible to get the gem by delay’ Akrura provoked- ‘We will be satisfied when the gem remains with you’
‘I will take the gem’ Shatdhanva got excited – ‘Satrajit has insulted me by giving his daughter to another’, he secretly entered the house of Satrajit in the night and killed the sleeping Satrajit and brought the gem.
‘Satrajit was killed. Shatdhanva killed him out of greed for the gem. Foolish Shatdhanva himself went to Akrura-Kritavarma in the night and gave the news and how long does such news take to spread.
‘My father has been killed’ Satyabhama heard. She reached Pitru Griha crying and crying. The dead body of the father was secured in a big oiled boat and at the same time she left for Hastinapur sitting on the chariot.
