हिन्दू धर्म ग्रंथों की माने तो आज ही के दिन भगवान कृष्ण ने महारास लीला रचाई थी।कहा जाता है कि तब भगवान कृष्ण ने अपनी योगमाया से रात को 6 माह तक रोके रखा था। तब आज के दिन लगातार 6 महीने तक रात ही रही थी, सूर्योदय नहीं हुआ था।चंद्र सरोवर कृष्ण की महारास लीला का गवाह है।
भगवान श्री कृष्ण का महारास भक्त और भगवान का मिलन है ऐसा मिलन जिसमे भगवान योगेश्वर अपने भक्तों की भक्ति की प्राकाष्टा को सारे युगों को दिखाना चाहते है भगवान के महारास मे वही गोपियाँ गई जो वर्षों से भगवान को पाने के लिए तप कर रहे थे इसलिए तो कहते है ब्रज मे बड़े भागी को जन्म मिलता है ब्रज की धुली मे भगवान और भक्त की चरणों की धुली से मुक्ति मिलती है महारास का मतलब है भक्त और भगवान का मिलन इंद्रियों का अर्थ ‘गोपी’ भी होता है। जो अपनी इंद्रियों से भगवत रस का पान करे, उसे गोपी कहा जाता है। रासलीला में गोपियों के भी दो भेद हैं। नित्यसिद्धा व साधनसिद्धा। इनमें साधनसिद्धा गोपियों के भी कई प्रकार हैं। जैसे श्रुतिरूपा, ऋषिरूपा, अन्यपूर्वा व अनन्यपूर्वा आदि।
जिन वेदाभिमानियों ने सिद्ध तो कर दिया कि ईश्वर है, पर स्वयं जिनका कृष्ण से साक्षात्कार नहीं हुआ, वे श्रुतिरूपा गोपी बन कर बृज में पैदा हुए। ऋषि जीवन जीकर भी जो श्रीकृष्ण को समझे नहीं, वे ऋषिरूपा गोपी बन कर बृज में पैदा हुए। वैवाहिक जीवन जीते हुए उस जीवन के प्रति अरुचि होने पर जो कृष्णोन्मुख हुए, वे अन्यपूर्वा गोपी बन कर वृंदावन में पैदा हुए और जो जन्म से ही वैरागी पैदा हुए, जैसे- मीरा या कि व्यासपुत्र, उन्हें अनन्यपूर्वा गोपी कहा जाता है।
बताया तो यहां तक जाता है की ब्रज में आज भी कृष्ण कालीन युग की बहुत सी निशानियां मौजूद हैं। ये निशानियां कहीं वृक्ष के रूप में तो कहीं शिला के रूप में मौजूद हैं। भक्तों के अनुसार,ये निशानियां कान्हा के आज भी ब्रज में रहने का एहसास कराती हैं। भगवान कृष्ण ने यूं तो बहुत सी लीलाएं रचीं, लेकिन महारास लीला कृष्ण की सबसे बड़ी लीला है। इसके बारे में हिन्दू धर्म ग्रंथो में भी वर्णन मिलता है। योगेश्वर श्रीकृष्ण भगवान की जय हो

It is said that then Lord Krishna had stopped the night for 6 months with his Yogamaya. Then on this day there was night for 6 months continuously and the sunrise did not occur. Chandra Sarovar is the witness of Krishna’s Maharas Leela.
Maharas of Lord Shri Krishna is the union of the devotee and God, such a union in which Lord Yogeshwar wants to show the light of devotion of his devotees to all the ages. In the Maharas of Lord, the same Gopis went who were doing penance for years to attain God. It is said that in Braj, a great person is born, in the washing of the feet of God and the devotee, one gets freedom. Maharas means the union of the devotee and God. Indriya also means ‘Gopi’. The one who drinks the essence of God through his senses is called Gopi. There are two types of Gopis in Rasleela. Nityasiddha and Sadhanasiddha. There are many types of Sadhanasiddha Gopis among them. Like Shrutirupa, Rishirupa, Anyapurva and Ananyapurva etc.
Those Veda-respecting people who proved that God exists, but who themselves did not meet Krishna, were born in Brij as Shrutirupa Gopis. Those who did not understand Shri Krishna even after living the life of a sage, were born in Brij as a sage-like Gopi. Those who turned to Krishna due to disinterest in married life, were born in Vrindavan as Anyapurva Gopi and those who were born recluse, like Meera or Vyasputra, are called Ananyapurva Gopi. It goes so far as to say that even today many signs of the Krishna period are still present in Braj. These signs are present somewhere in the form of trees and somewhere in the form of rocks. According to devotees, these signs make us feel that Kanha is still living in Braj. Lord Krishna created many Leelas, but Maharas Leela is the biggest Leela of Krishna.
