गणेशोत्सव की तैयारियां शुरू हो चुकी हैं और सभी भक्तजन गणेश जी को अपने-अपने घरों में लाने के लिए उत्साहित हैं। ये तो हम सभी जानते हैं कि गणेशोत्सव पूरे धूमधाम से 10 दिनों तक मनाया जाता है, लेकिन क्या आपको मालूम है कि इसे 10 दिनों तक ही क्यों मनाया जाता है?

इसके अनुसार, वेद व्यास जी ने भगवान गणेश जी को महाभारत की कथा को लिपिबद्ध करने के लिए कहा। जिस पर गणेश जी ने कहा मैं अपनी कलम से जब लिखना प्रारंभ करूंगा तो बीच में कहीं भी रुकूंगा नहीं और यदि कलम रुक गई तो लिखना छोड़ दूंगा।
वेद व्यास जी ने उनकी बात मानकर निरंतर 10 दिनों तक इस कथा का वाचन किया और भगवान गणेश जी एक ही मुद्रा में बैठकर महाभारत को लिपिबद्ध करते रहे। गणेश चतुर्थी के दिन भगवान गणेश जी ने महाभारत को लिखना शुरू किया और 10 दिनों के बाद अनंत चतुर्दशी के दिन उन्होंने इस कार्य को पूरा किया। इसी वजह से इस उत्सव को 10 दिनों तक मनाया जाता है।
इसके अलावा अगर हम इतिहासकारों की मानें तो भारत में भाद्रपद मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि को गणेश चतुर्थी का पर्व हजारों साल से मनाया जा रहा है। चलिए इतिहास में पीछे जा कर देखते हैं कि कैसे इस पर्व को 10 दिनों तक मनाने की परंपरा का आरंभ हुआ।
विद्वानों का मानना है कि जब भारत में पेशवाओं का शासन था, उस समय इस पर्व को भव्य रूप से मनाया जाने लगा। जब अंग्रेज़ भारत आए तो उन्होंने पेशवाओं के राज्य पर अधिकार कर लिया। इसी कारण गणेश उत्सव की भव्यता में कमी आने लगी, लेकिन ये परंपरा बनी रही। लोग इस बात से नाखुश थे और उनमें इस वजह से असंतोष बढ़ने लगा।
लोकमान्य तिलक जी के मन में इस उत्सव को पुनर्जीवित करने का विचार आया क्योंकि यह लोगों को संगठित करने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका था। लोकमान्य तिलक ने विचार किया कि श्रीगणेश ही एकमात्र ऐसे देवता हैं जो समाज के सभी स्तरों में पूजनीय हैं।
गणेशोत्सव एक धार्मिक उत्सव होने के कारण अंग्रेज शासक भी इसमें दखल नहीं दे सकेंगे। इसी विचार के साथ लोकमान्य तिलक ने सार्वजनिक गणेशोत्सव की शुरूआत की। इस प्रकार गणेशोत्सव ने आजादी की लड़ाई में महत्वपूर्ण योगदान दिया।
इसके अलावा इस पर्व को 10 दिनों तक मनाने का विचार भी लोकमान्य तिलक जी का था, इस संबंध में उन्होंने पुणे में एक सभा आयोजित की। इस सभा में ये तय किया गया कि भाद्रपद शुक्ल चतुर्थी से भाद्रपद अनंत चतुर्दशी तक गणेश उत्सव मनाया जाए।
10 दिनों के इस उत्सव में हिंदुओं को एकजुट करने व देश को आजाद करने के लिए विभिन्न योजनाओं पर भी विचार किया जाता था।

Lokmanya Tilak ji’s mind got the idea of reviving this festival because it was the best way to organize people. Lokmanya Tilak thought that Shree Ganesh is the only deity who is revered in all levels of society.
Due to being a religious festival, the British rulers will not be able to interfere in it. With this idea, Lokmanya Tilak started the public Ganeshotsav. Thus Ganeshotsav contributed significantly to the freedom struggle.
