An Untold Story of the Cleverness of Hanuman
Friends, whenever wise beings are counted, the name of Hanuman comes first. As Tulsidas has written in the Ramcharitmanas.
Atulit bal dhama, radiant like a golden mountain, destroyer of demons, foremost among the wise, full of all virtues, leader of the vanaras, and the beloved devotee of Lord Rama, I bow to Hanuman.
Today, we will tell you a story that shows Hanuman’s intelligence and cleverness.
Once, Lord Rama was happily praising Hanuman in front of Sita. He said that if Hanuman had not helped in conquering Lanka, he would still be separated from Sita.
Sita said that you always praise his strength and wisdom. Today, tell me an incident where his cleverness helped the most.
Rama said that during the war, Ravana had become weak and most of his warriors had been defeated. Then he thought of a final plan to perform a powerful Chandi Yajna to please the Goddess.
If the yajna had been completed, Ravana would have surely won.
Hanuman understood this and immediately took the form of a Brahmin and joined the yajna. He began serving all the Brahmins selflessly.
The Brahmins became very pleased and asked him to request a boon.
At first, Hanuman refused, but on their insistence, he asked for one boon.
Sita became curious and asked what he had requested.
Rama explained that Hanuman asked for a small change in the mantra that was being chanted repeatedly.
The Brahmins agreed without realizing the consequence.
The mantra was “Jaya tvam devi chamunde jaya bhutartiharini.”
Hanuman changed just one letter. He replaced the letter “h” with “k.”
Bhutartiharini means the one who removes suffering. Bhutartikarini means the one who causes suffering.
Because of this one change, the meaning of the mantra completely reversed.
As a result, instead of blessing Ravana, the energy turned against him and led to his destruction.
Rama concluded that such is the supreme cleverness of Hanuman.
Sita was very pleased after hearing this.
Singing the virtues of Lord Rama brings all auspiciousness. Those who listen with devotion cross the ocean of life without any support.
I read the aarti of Rama and become like the sacred water of Sarayu. I reach Ayodhya and have the darshan of my Lord.

मित्रो ज्ञानियों की जब गणना की जाती है, तब हनुमानजी का नाम सर्वप्रथम लिया जाता है, जैसा कि तुलसी दास जी ने रामचरितमानस में लिखा भी है।
अतुलितबलधामं हेमशैलाभदेहं दनुजवनकृशानुं ज्ञानिनामग्रगण्यम्। सकलगुणनिधानं वानराणामधीशं रघुपतिप्रियभक्तं वातजातं नमामि॥
अतुल बल के धाम, सोने के पर्वत (सुमेरु) के समान कान्तियुक्त शरीर वाले, दैत्य रूपी वन (को ध्वंस करने) के लिए अग्नि रूप, ज्ञानियों में अग्रगण्य, संपूर्ण गुणों के निधान, वानरों के स्वामी, श्री रघुनाथजी के प्रिय भक्त पवनपुत्र श्री
हनुमान्जी को मैं प्रणाम करता हूँ॥
आज हम आपको इन्ही हनुमानजी की चतुरता की एक कथा बतायेगें। मित्रों, ऐसी हिन्दी पौराणिक कथा प्रचलित है कि एक समय कपिवर की प्रशंसा के आनन्द में मग्न श्रीराम ने सीताजी से कहा-‘देवी! लंका विजय में यदि हनुमान का सहयोग न मिलता तो आज भी मैं सीता वियोगी ही बना रहता। ’ सीताजी ने कहा-‘आप बार-बार हनुमान की प्रशंसा करते रहते हैं, कभी उनके बल शौर्य की, कभी उनके ज्ञान की। अतः आज आप एक ऐसा प्रसंग सुनाइये कि जिसमें उनकी चतुरता से लंका विजय में विशेष सहायता हुई हो। ’
‘ठीक याद दिलाया तुमने। ’
श्रीराम बोले-
युद्ध में रावण थक गया था।
उसके अधिकतर वीर सैनिकों का वध हो चुका था। अब युद्ध में विजय प्राप्त करने का उसने अन्तिम उपाय सोचा। यह था देवी को प्रसन्न करने के लिए चण्डी महायज्ञ।
यज्ञ आरंभ हो गया। किंतु हमारे हनुमान को चैन कहां?
यदि यज्ञ पूर्ण हो जाता और रावण देवी से वर प्राप्त करने मे सफल हो जाता तो उसकी विजय निश्चित थी। बस, तुरंत उन्होने ब्राह्मण का रूप धारण किया और यज्ञ में शामिल ब्राह्मणों की सेवा करना प्रारंभ कर दिया। ऐसी निःस्वार्थ सेवा देखकर ब्राह्मण अति प्रसन्न हुये। उन्होंने हनुमान से वर मांगने के लिए कहा। ‘पहले तो हनुमान ने कुछ भी मांगने से इनकार कर दिया, किंतु सेवा से संतुष्ट ब्राह्मणों का आग्रह देखकर उन्होंने एक वरदान मांग लिया। ’ ‘वरदान में क्या मांगा हनुमान ने?’ सीताजी के प्रश्न में उत्सुकता थी।
‘उनकी इसी याचना में तो चतुरता झलकती है’ श्रीराम बोले- ‘जिस मंत्र को बार बार किया जा रहा था, उसी मंत्र के एक अक्षर का परिवर्तन का हनुमान ने वरदान में मांग लिया और बैचारे भोले ब्राह्मणों ने ‘तथास्तु’ कह दिया। उसी के कारण मंत्र का अर्थ ही बदल गया, जिससे कि रावण का घोर विनाश हुआ। ’ ‘एक ही अक्षर से अर्थ में इतना परिवर्तन!’ सीताजी ने प्रश्न किया ‘कौन सा मंत्र था वह?’
श्रीराम ने मंत्र बताया-
जय त्वं देवि चामुण्डे जय भूतार्तिहारिणि। जय सर्वगते देवि कालरात्रि नमोऽस्तु ते। । (अर्गलास्तोत्र-2) इस श्लोक में ‘भूतार्तिहारिणि’ मे ‘ह’ के स्थान पर ‘क’ का उच्चारण करने का हनुमान ने वर मांगा, , , , भूतार्तिहारिणि का अर्थ है-‘संपूर्ण प्रणियों की पीड़ा हरने वाली और ‘भूतार्तिकारिणि’ का अर्थ है प्राणियों को पीड़ित करने वाली। ’ इस प्रकार एक सिर्फ एक अक्षर बदलने ने रावण का विनाश हो गया। ‘ऐसे चतुरशिरोमणि हैं हमारे हनुमान’-श्रीराम ने प्रसंग को पूर्ण किया। सीताजी इस प्रसंग को सुनकर अत्यंत प्रसन्न हुई। मित्रों आज के युग में हमें हनुमान की आवश्यकता है। ऐसे हनुमान की जो देश भक्त हो, ज्ञानी हो, त्यागी हो, चरित्र सम्पन्न और जिसमें चतुरशीलता हो। सकल सुमंगल दायक रघुनायक गुन गान। सादर सुनहिं ते तरहिं भव सिंधु बिना जलजान॥ भावार्थ:-श्री रघुनाथजी का गुणगान संपूर्ण सुंदर मंगलों का देने वाला है। जो इसे आदर सहित सुनेंगे, वे बिना किसी जहाज (अन्य साधन) के ही भवसागर को तर जाएँगे॥ !! जय श्री राम !!
