भक्त प्रह्लाद के पौत्र बलि यज्ञ कर रहे थे तभी उनकी यज्ञशाला में नारायण प्रभु (विष्णु जी ) का वामन के रूप में आगमन हुआ। वामन बलि के द्वार पर खड़े हो कर दान की याचना करने लगे। तब बलि ने वहाँ आकर वामन से मन चाहा दान माँगने को कहा तब वामन ने तीन पग भूमि मांगी। बलि ने संकल्प कर के तीन पग भूमि का दान किया। अब वामन ने तुरंत अपना रूप वामन से विराट किया और पहले चरण में नीचे के लोक और दूसरे चरण में ऊपर के सारे लोक नाप लिए इस तरह से वामन ने दो पग में सारे ब्रह्माण्ड को नाप लिया और बलि से तीसरा पग रखने के लिए स्थान माँगने लगे। तब बलि ने अपने शिर पर तीसरा पग रखने को कहा! वामन ने तीसरा पैर बलि के सिर पर रखा।
वामन बलि के इस भाव पर प्रसन्न हुए और बलि को आने वाले मन्वन्तर में इंद्र बनने का आशीर्वाद दिया पर तब तक बलि को सुतल लोग में वास करने को कहा। वामन ने बलि से कहा मै तुम्हारे दान देने की प्रवित्ति से बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ आज से तुम्हारे दान देने की प्रवित्ति के लिए इस दान का नाम “बलिदान” के नाम से जाना जायगा साथ ही बलि से मांगो क्या माँगना चाहते हो कहकर वर माँगने को कहा। तब बली ने कहा प्रभु अभी अभी मैंने ही आप को ये सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि दान की है और मै दान की हुई वस्तु वापस नहीं ले सकता। हे प्रभु आप अगर मुझे कुछ देना ही चाहते हो तो मै आप से आप को ही मांगता हूँ। वामन ने बलि से कहा- राजा बलि तुम अगले मन्वन्तर के आने तक सुतल लोक में वास करना और मैं तुम्हारा द्वारपाल बनकर नित्य तुम्हारे साथ रहूँगा वामन बलि को ले कर सुतल लोक चले गए।
नारद जी सारा वृत्तांत सुनाने लक्ष्मी जी के पास पहुचे और कहने लगे की हे माता आज से आप संन्यास ले लो क्योकि अब आप के पति विष्णु जी आपके पास नहीं आएँगे। लक्ष्मी जी नारद जी की रहस्यमयी बातो को सुनकर नारद से कहा की स्पष्ट बात कीजिये तब नारद जी ने लक्ष्मी जी को सारा वृतांत सुनाया और कहा की अबसे वे “राजा बलि के यहाँ द्वारपाल हैं ”। तब माता लक्ष्मी ने इस समस्या का उपाय पूछा ! तब नारद जी ने माता लक्ष्मी को संकेत दिया की बलि के कोई बहन नहीं है।
माता लक्ष्मी नारद जी के संकेत को समझ गई और सुतल लोक में राजा बली के पास एक सामान्य स्त्री का रूप धारण कर पहुँच गई। राजा बलि ने देखा की एक स्त्री हमारे द्वार पर कुछ माँगने आयी है और उस स्त्री से पूछा की आप को क्या चाहिए निःसंकोच कहिये। तब माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा की मेरे कोई भाई नहीं है मुझे भी अन्य स्त्रियो की भाँती अपने माय के जाने की इच्छा होती है पर मैं कहा जाऊ और रोने लगी। तब बलि ने कहा मेरी कोई बहन नहीं है तो आज से हम दोनों भाई बहन हुए। तभी माता लक्ष्मी ने बलि को रक्षासूत्र बाँधा और बलि ने अपनी बहन स्वीकार किया और कुछ माँगने को कहा तब माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा भैया मेरे पास किसी बात की कमी नहीं है बस तुम अपने द्वार पर खड़े इस द्वारपाल को मुक्त कर दो तब राजाबलि ने माता लक्ष्मी से पूछा की बहन तुम इस द्वारपाल को मुक्त क्यों करवाना चाहती हो ! तब भगवान् लक्ष्मी-नारायण चतुर्भुज रूप में प्रकट हो गए। राजा बलि ने जब यह बात जानी कि उन्होंने जिसे अपनी बहन बनाया है वो साक्षात् माता लक्ष्मी है तब वो माता लक्ष्मी से क्षमा माँगने लगे। तब माता लक्ष्मी ने कहा कि इसमें आप का कोई दोष नहीं है मैं ही यहाँ अपने पति को वापस ले जाने आयी थी। फिर माता लक्ष्मी अपने पति को बलि से मुक्त कराकर बैकुंठ ले गयी।
विशेष👉 जहाँ नारायण (विष्णु जी देव है देव का एक कर्म है परोपकारी) होते है वहां लक्ष्मी स्वयं ही चल कर आ जाती है। यानि परोपकारी अथवा दान देने वाले (नारायण राजा बलि के घर में थे) के घर लक्ष्मी जी नारायण के साथ आती है उन्ही को सुखी करती है। जहाँ नारायण की सेवा होती है वहां लक्ष्मी बिना आमंत्रण के आ जाती है। जिस प्रकार बलि के घर में नारायण विराजमान थे तो माता लक्ष्मी स्वयं चलकर वहाँ आ गयी। बलि ने अपने जीवन में दान की प्रवृत्ति को अपना कर बहुत सत्कर्म किये इसलिए नारायण उनको प्राप्त हुए और नारायण के आते ही लक्ष्मी भी वह स्वयं चल कर आ गयी। इसलिए दान जैसी प्रवृति को अपने अंदर पैदा करो ! ध्यान रहे दान नेक कमाई से ही फलीभूत होता है भ्रष्टाचारी की कमाई निष्फल ही रहती है ! संतोषी जीवन अपनाओ जो आपकी सादगी एवं अपरिग्रह की प्रवृति से ही संभव है! प्रभु में श्रद्धा एवं भक्ति, गौमाता को पुण्यात्मा मानकर उसकी सेवा, एवं शुद्ध शाकाहार अपनाओं, करुणा को चुनो ! एक सत्कर्म पूरा हो तो दूसरा सत्कर्म करो दूसरा पूरा हो तो तीसरा करो।
जो हमेशा सत्कर्म करते है लक्ष्मी नारायण उन्ही को प्राप्त होते है।

Devotee Prahlad’s grandson Bali was performing Yagya when Narayan Prabhu (Vishnu ji) arrived in the form of Vaman in his Yagyashala. Vaman stood at the door of Bali and started requesting for donations. Then Bali came there and asked Vaman to ask for any donation he wanted, then Vaman asked for three steps of land. Bali resolved to donate three steps of land. Now Vaman immediately made his form bigger than Vaman and in the first step he measured the lower worlds and in the second step he measured all the upper worlds. In this way Vamana measured the entire universe in two steps and started asking Bali for a place to take the third step. Then Bali asked to place the third step on his head. Vaman placed the third foot on Bali’s head.
Vaman was pleased with this gesture of Bali and blessed Bali to become Indra in the coming Manvantar but till then asked Bali to reside in Sutal Log. Vaman said to Bali, I am very happy with your charitable giving attitude. From today onwards, this donation will be known as “Balidan” for your charitable giving attitude and also asked Bali to ask for a boon by saying, “Ask what do you want to ask for”. Then Bali said, Lord, I have just donated this entire creation to you and I cannot take back the donated thing. O Lord, if you want to give me something then I ask you only for you. Vaman said to Bali – King Bali, you stay in Sutal Lok till the next Manvantar comes and I will always be with you as your gatekeeper. Vaman went to Sutal Lok with Bali.
Narad ji reached Lakshmi ji to narrate the whole story and said, O mother, take retirement from today because now your husband Vishnu ji will not come to you. After listening to Narad ji’s mysterious words, Lakshmi ji asked Narad to speak clearly, then Narad ji narrated the whole story to Lakshmi ji and said that from now on he is “the gatekeeper at the place of King Bali”. Then Goddess Lakshmi asked the solution to this problem. Then Narad ji informed Goddess Lakshmi that Bali had no sister.
Mother Lakshmi understood Narad ji’s signal and reached King Bali in Sutal Lok in the form of an ordinary woman. King Bali saw that a woman had come to his door asking for something and asked the woman, “What do you want, tell me without any hesitation.” Then Goddess Lakshmi said that I do not have any brother, like other women, I also wish to go to my mother but where should I go and started crying. Then Bali said, I don’t have any sister, so from today we both become brothers and sisters. Then Goddess Lakshmi tied Rakshasutra to Bali and Bali accepted her sister and asked for something. Then Goddess Lakshmi said, brother, I have no shortage of anything, just free this gatekeeper standing at your door. Then King Bali asked Goddess Lakshmi, sister, why do you want to free this gatekeeper? Then Lord Lakshmi-Narayan appeared in the four-armed form. When King Bali came to know that the person whom he had made his sister was actually Goddess Lakshmi, then he started apologizing to Goddess Lakshmi. Then Goddess Lakshmi said that it is not your fault in this, I had come here to take my husband back. Then Goddess Lakshmi freed her husband from the sacrifice and took him to Vaikuntha.
Special: Where Narayan (Vishnu ji is God, one of God’s actions is philanthropic) is there, Lakshmi herself comes. That means Lakshmi ji comes with Narayan to the house of a philanthropist or donor (Narayan was in the house of King Bali) and makes him happy. Wherever Narayan is served, Lakshmi comes without invitation. Just as Narayana was sitting in Bali’s house, Goddess Lakshmi herself came there. Bali adopted the attitude of charity in his life and did many good deeds, hence he got Narayan and as soon as Narayan arrived, Lakshmi herself also came. Therefore, develop a charitable attitude within yourself! Keep in mind that charity is fruitful only through good earnings, the earnings of the corrupt remain fruitless. Adopt a contented life which is possible only due to your simplicity and attitude of non-attachment! Have faith and devotion in God, consider mother cow as virtuous and serve her, and adopt pure vegetarianism, choose compassion! If one good deed is completed then do another good deed, if another good deed is completed then do the third. Only those who always do good deeds attain Lakshmi Narayan.
