मिथिला के महाराजा जनक केवल एक राजा ही नहीं थे वे धर्म, ज्ञान और कर्मयोग के आदर्श पुरुष थे। उनका राज्य सम्पन्न था, लेकिन उससे अधिक सम्पन्न उनका मन था। जहाँ अन्य राजाओं को राज्य का भार दबा देता था, वहाँ जनक अपने कर्तव्य को ऐसे निभाते थे जैसे वे स्वयं कर्म में स्थित हों पर कर्म के बंधन से सर्वथा मुक्त।
एक बार ऋषि अष्टावक्र उनके दरबार में आए। जनक ने उन्हें सत्कार से बैठाया। आश्रमों में यह प्रसिद्ध था कि महाराजा जनक राजा होकर भी निष्काम कर्मयोग के मार्ग पर चलते हैं और हर स्थिति में अटूट समभाव रखते हैं।
इसी के परीक्षण हेतु अष्टावक्र ऋषि ने जनक से प्रश्न किया
राजन, आप कहते हैं कि आपके मन में न लोभ है, न मोह, न राज्य का अभिमान। किंतु एक विशाल राज्य का भार उठाकर कैसे संभव है कि मन फिर भी पूर्ण रूप से निष्कलुष रहे?
जनक मुस्कुराए। उन्होंने उत्तर दिया
गुरुवर, मैं जानता हूँ कि राज्य मेरा नहीं, ईश्वर का है। मैं केवल निमित्त हूँ, साधन हूँ। जिस प्रकार बादल वर्षा करते हैं पर वर्षा पर अधिकार नहीं रखते, उसी प्रकार मैं कर्म करता हूँ पर फल की कामना नहीं रखता।
ऋषि ने कहा, शब्द सरल हैं जनक, पर सत्य तब ज्ञात होगा जब परीक्षा आएगी।
इतना कहकर अष्टावक्र ने अपनी दिव्य शक्ति से महल में अचानक आग लगा दी। चारों ओर कोलाहल मच गया। सैनिक, मंत्री, रानियाँ सब अमूल्य वस्तुएँ बचाने को दौड़ पड़े।
पर जनक शांत बैठे रहे। उनका ध्यान विचलित न हुआ।
अष्टावक्र ने पूछा
राजन, आपके महल में आग लगी है! आपका धन, आपका राजभवन सब जल रहा है, और आप बैठे हैं?
जनक ने धीमे स्वर में कहा
गुरुवर, जो मेरा है ही नहीं, उसके नष्ट होने पर शोक कैसा?
राज्य ईश्वर का है, शरीर प्रकृति का है, और आत्मा परमात्मा की है।
मैं कौन-सा भाग अपना कहूँ कि उसके नष्ट होने से दुख करूँ?
अष्टावक्र मुस्कुराए।
आग का भ्रम मिट गया।
सारा महल यथावत था।
उन्होंने कहा
राजन, आज तुमने सिद्ध कर दिया कि निष्काम कर्मयोग केवल उपदेश नहीं तुम्हारा स्वभाव है।
ऐसे राजा ही इस धरती पर प्रकाश-स्तंभ बनते हैं, जिनकी पकड़ राज्य पर नहीं, धर्म पर होती है।
जनक ने विनम्र होकर कहा
गुरुवर, जब मन को फल की लालसा से मुक्त कर दिया जाए, तब किसी भी स्थिति में मन विचलित नहीं होता।
कर्म मेरा कर्तव्य है पर परिणाम उसका जो सबका नियंता है।
निष्कर्ष
निष्काम कर्मयोग का अर्थ है कर्म करना, पर उसके फल का स्वामित्व न चाहना।
जिसे परिणाम की चिंता नहीं रहती, उसका मन सदैव शांत रहता है।
सच्चा राजा वह है जो स्वयं पर शासन कर सके।
जनक हमें सिखाते हैं कि संसार में रहते हुए भी मन संसार से मुक्त रह सकता है।
जो ईश्वर को कर्ता मानता है, वही जीवन में निर्भय बनता है।
Maharaja Janak of Mithila was not only a king, he was an ideal man of religion, knowledge and karmayoga. His kingdom was prosperous, but his mind was more prosperous than that. Where other kings were weighed down by the weight of the kingdom, Janak performed his duties as if he himself was engaged in action but was completely free from the bondage of action.
Once sage Ashtavakra came to his court. Janak made him sit with hospitality. It was famous in the ashrams that Maharaja Janak, despite being a king, follows the path of selfless Karmayoga and maintains unwavering equanimity in every situation.
To test this, sage Ashtavakra asked Janak a question.
Rajan, you say that you have neither greed, nor attachment, nor pride in the state. But how is it possible for the mind to remain completely pure after bearing the burden of a huge kingdom?
Janak smiled. he replied Guruvar, I know that the kingdom is not mine, but God’s. I am only an instrument, a means. Just as clouds cause rain but have no control over the rain, in the same way I perform actions but have no desire for results.
The sage said, Janak, the words are simple, but the truth will be known only when the test comes. Saying this, Ashtavakra suddenly set fire to the palace with his divine power. There was commotion all around. Soldiers, ministers, queens all ran to save the priceless things. But Janak remained sitting quietly. His attention was not distracted.
Ashtavakra asked King, your palace is on fire! Your wealth, your royal palace are all burning, and you are sitting?
Janak said in a low voice How to mourn the loss of a Guru who is not mine?
The kingdom belongs to God, the body belongs to nature, and the soul belongs to God. Which part should I call mine that I would be saddened by its destruction?
Ashtavakra smiled. The illusion of fire vanished. The entire palace was intact. he said Rajan, today you have proved that selfless Karmayoga is not just a sermon, it is your nature.
Only such kings become pillars of light on this earth, whose hold is not on the state but on religion.
Janak said politely Guruvar, when the mind is freed from the desire for results, then the mind does not get distracted in any situation. Karma is my duty but the result is of Him who is the controller of all.
Conclusion Nishkam Karmayoga means doing work, but not wanting ownership of its results. The one who is not worried about the outcome, his mind always remains calm. A true king is one who can rule himself. Janak teaches us that even while living in the world, the mind can remain free from the world. Only the one who believes God to be the doer becomes fearless in life.
