आत्मा परमात्मा हमारे भीतर ही है………

“आत्माsस्य जन्तोर्निहितो गुहायाम्।” (उपनिषद्)

भगवान् तो हमारे भीतर ही बैठे हैं, हम उन्हें बाहर ढूँढते-फिरते हैं। एक सेठ दिल्ली से मुम्बई जाने के लिए गाडी पर चढा। उसके पास दश हजार रुपए थे। एक ठग उसका पीछा कर रहा था, अतः वह भी उसी गाडी में चढ गया।

सेठ समझ गया कि यह लुटेरा है और मेरे रुपए लुटना चाहता है। सेठ ने उससे मित्रता कर ली। रात को जब ठग लघुशंका के लिए बाथरूम में गया तब सेठ ने रुपए तकिए में भर दिए।

सोने का समय आया तो सेठ ने ठग से कहा, “मित्र, तुम्हारे पास तकिया नहीं है, मेरे तकिए को अपने सिर के नीचे रख लो, नींद अच्छी आएगी।” ठग ने उसकी बात मान ली और तकिया लगाकर सोने का बहाना करने लगा।

दूसरी तरफ सेठ चैन की नींद सो गया। चोर रातभर सेठ की तलाशी लेता रहा, परन्तु उसे कुछ नहीं मिला। अगले दिन सेठ ने अपना तकिया वापस ले लिया।

रात आयी, फिर सेठ ने तकिया चोर को थमा दिया और खर्राटे भरने लगा। इधर चोर सेठ का ट्रंक रातभर टटोलता रहा, लेकिन उसे कुछ नहीं मिला। अगले दिन दोनों मुम्बई आ गए।

दोनों एक साथ गाडी से उतरे, नमस्कार के बाद चोर ने सेठ से पूछा, “आपको मालूम है कि मैं कौन हूँ ?”
सेठ ने कहा,”हाँ, मुझे मालूम है, तुम मेरे मित्र हो।”
चोर बोला, “नहीं, मैं चोर हूँ और तुम्हारा माल चुराने के लिए गाडी पर चढा, पर मिला कुछ नहीं।”

सेठ ने कहा,”तुमने तकिया देखा था ?”
चोर ने कहा,”नहीं”
सेठ ने कहा,”सारा माल तुम्हारे पास ही था, तकिए में । तुमने उसे एक बार भी नहीं देखा।”
चोर पछताने लगा।

असल जिन्दगी में आत्मा और परमात्मा हमारे हृदय में ही विराजमान है, हम उसे दूर-दूर तक ढूँढते-खोजते फिरते हैं—–

कोई ईसाइयत में, कोई इस्लाम में, कोई काशी में, कोई काबा में, कोई येरुशलम में, परन्तु वह हमारे पास ही हमारे हृदय में है। तभी उपनिषद् ने कहा हैः—

“आत्माsस्य जन्तोर्निहितो गुहायाम्।”
(आत्मा) आत्मा, (अस्य) परमात्मा, (जन्तोः) प्राणि के, (गुहायाम्) हृदय में, (निहितः) छिपा हुआ है।
आत्मा तथा परमात्मा इस जन्तु (प्राणि) की हृदयरूपी गुहा में बैठे हैं—जो चाहे उनका वहाँ दर्शन कर ले—घर में सूई और हम शहर में ढिंढोरा पीटते-फिरते हैं।

“The soul of the living being is hidden in the cave. (Upanishad)

God is sitting within us, we keep searching for him outside. A Seth boarded a car to go from Delhi to Mumbai. He had ten thousand rupees with him. A thug was following him, so he also got into the same car.

Seth understood that he is a robber and wants to loot my money. Seth befriended him. At night, when the thug went to the bathroom to have a little doubt, Seth stuffed the money in the pillow.

When it was time to sleep, Seth said to the thug, “Friend, you do not have a pillow, put my pillow under your head, you will sleep well.” The thug obeyed him and started pretending to sleep by putting a pillow.

On the other hand, Seth slept peacefully. The thief kept searching for Seth all night, but he could not find anything. The next day Seth took back his pillow.

Night came, then Seth handed over the pillow to the thief and started snoring. Here thief Seth’s trunk kept groping all night, but he could not find anything. Next day both came to Mumbai.

Both got down from the car together, after greeting the thief asked Seth, “Do you know who I am?” Seth said,” Yes, I know, you are my friend.” The thief said, “No, I am a thief and got on the car to steal your goods, but got nothing.”

Seth said, “Did you see the pillow?” The thief said, “No” Seth said,” All the goods were with you, in the pillow. You did not see it even once.” The thief started repenting.

In real life, the soul and the divine reside in our heart only, we roam far and wide searching for it—–

Some in Christianity, some in Islam, some in Kashi, some in Kaaba, some in Jerusalem, but He is with us in our heart. That’s why the Upanishad has said:–

“The soul of the living being is hidden in the cave. (आत्मा) the soul, (अस्य) the Supreme Soul, (जन्तोः) of the creature, (पुहयाम्) in the heart, (निहितः) is hidden. The soul and the Supreme Self are seated in the heart-like cavity of this animal (creature)—whoever wants to see them there—the needle in the house and we are beating the drums in the city.
