चिरकाल की बात है, एक बार धन के देवता कुबेर को अपने अपार धन पर अभिमान हो गया। एक दिन उनके मन में विचार आया कि “मेरे से अधिक धनवान समस्त जग में कोई नहीं है, मुझे अपने धन का प्रदर्शन करना चाहिए।” अपनी संपत्ति का दिखावा करने के लिए देवता कुबेर ने सभी देवताओं को भोजन पर आमंत्रित किया।
जब वह भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती को भोजन के लिए निमंत्रण देने पहुंचे, तो भगवान शिवजी कुबेर की मंशा को समझ गए थे कि वे सिर्फ अपनी धन-संपत्ति का दिखावा करने के लिए उन्हें अपने महल में आमंत्रित कर रहे हैं।
भगवान शिव जी ने कुबेर का अभिमान तोड़ने के लिए गणेश जी को उनके साथ भेजने का निर्णय लिया। भगवान शिव जी बोले, “मैं कुछ महत्वपूर्ण कार्यों में व्यस्त हूँ, आप मेरे पुत्र गणेश को अपने साथ ले जाएं।”
भगवान शिव जी की आज्ञा मानते हुए, कुबेर गणेश जी के साथ अपने महल वापिस आ गए। वहां उन्होंने गणेश जी के सामने अपने धन-दौलत का खूब बखान किया और फिर उसके बाद उन्होंने भगवान गणेश जी को भोजन ग्रहण करने के लिए कहा। गणेश जी को भोजन में विभिन्न प्रकार के पकवान परोसे गए और धीरे-धीरे गणपति जी ने पूरा भोजन समाप्त कर दिया।
इसके बाद उन्होंने कुबेर जी से और भोजन लाने को कहा, उन्हें काफी सारा भोजन फिर से परोसा गया और वह भी उन्होंने खत्म कर दिया। इस प्रकार वह महल के रसोई घर में बना पूरा भोजन खा गए, इसके बावजूद उनकी भूख शांत नहीं हुई और उन्होंने कुबेर जी से और भोजन की मांग की।
सबसे धनवान देवता होने के बावजूद जब कुबेर जी, गणेश जी को पेटभर खाना नहीं खिला पाए तो उन्हें काफी शर्मिंदगी महसूस हुई। साथ ही वह भगवान की लीला भी समझ गए और इस प्रकार उनका अभिमान टूट गया।
इसके बाद उन्होंने गणेश जी से माफ़ी मांगी और गणेश जी वहां से चले गए।रास्ते में वह अपनी सवारी मूषक पर सवार होकर जा रहे थे, रास्ते के बीच में मूषक ने एक सर्प देखा और भय से उछल पड़े। जिसके कारण वह संतुलन खो बैठे और नीचे गिर पड़े। नीचे गिरने की वजह से उनके सारे कपड़े गंदे हो गए, वह उठे और इधर-उधर देखने लगे। तभी उन्हें कहीं से हँसने की आवाज़ सुनाई दी, लेकिन गणेश जी को आसपास कोई नहीं दिखा। थोड़ी देर बाद उनका ध्यान आसमान में चंद्रमा पर गया और उन्हें तब पता चला कि चंद्र देव उनके गिरने का उपहास बना रहे थे।
यह देखकर गणेश जी अत्यंत क्रोधित हो उठे और चंद्रमा को श्राप देते हुए बोले कि,
“हे चंद्रमा! तुम इस प्रकार से मेरी विवशता का मजाक उड़ा रहे हो, यह तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देता। मेरी मदद करने की बजाय तुम मुझ पर हंस रहे हो, जाओ मैं तुम्हे श्राप देता हूं कि आज के बाद तुम इस विशाल गगन पर राज नहीं कर सकोगे और तुम्हें कोई भी देख नहीं पाएगा।
इस श्राप के प्रभाव से चारों ओर अंधेरा छा गया और चंद्र देव की रोशनी गायब हो गई। चंद्रमा को अपनी गलती का एहसास हुआ और वो अपनी गलती के लिए गणेश जी से बार-बार क्षमा मांगने लगे।
चंद्रमा को इस प्रकार लाचार देखकर, गणेश जी का गुस्सा शांत हो गया। चंद्र देव ने फिर से गणेश जी से कहा कि “कृपया आप मुझे माफ कर दीजिए और मुझे अपने इस श्राप से मुक्त कीजिए। यदि मैं अपनी रोशनी इस संसार पर नहीं फैला पाया तो मेरे होने न होने का अर्थ खत्म हो जाएगा।”
यह सुनकर गणेश जी ने कहा कि “मैं अब चाहकर भी अपना श्राप वापस नहीं ले सकता। परन्तु इस श्राप के प्रभाव को कम ज़रूर कर सकता हूँ। प्रत्येक माह में केवल चंद्रमा अमावस्या के दिन आपको कोई देख नहीं पाएगा। इसके बाद आपकी कलाएं बढ़ती जाएंगी, और पूर्णिमा के दिन आप अपने पूर्ण स्वरूप में दिखाई देंगे। पूर्णिमा के बाद फिर से आपकी कलाएं घटती जाएंगी। गणेश जी ने आगे कहा कि, आज गणेश चतुर्थी पर आपने मेरा अपमान किया है, आज के दिन अगर कोई आपको देख लेगा तो पाप का भागीदार बनेगा।
इसके पश्चात गणेश जी कैलाश पर्वत पर वापस लौट गए। मान्यताओं के अनुसार, इस कारण से आज भी गणेश चतुर्थी के दिन चंद्र दर्शन अशुभ माना जाता है।
Once upon a time, Kuber, the god of wealth, became proud of his immense wealth. One day the thought came to his mind that “There is no one in the whole world richer than me, I should showcase my wealth.” To show off his wealth, Lord Kuber invited all the gods for a meal.
When he came to invite Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati for food, Lord Shiva understood Kuber’s intention that he was inviting them to his palace just to show off his wealth.
Lord Shiva decided to send Ganesha with Kuber to break his pride. Lord Shiva said, “I am busy with some important work, you take my son Ganesha with you.”
Obeying the orders of Lord Shiva, Kuber returned to his palace with Ganesha. There he boasted about his wealth in front of Lord Ganesha and after that he asked Lord Ganesha to take food. Various types of dishes were served to Ganesh ji and gradually Ganpati ji finished the entire meal.
After this he asked Kuber ji to bring more food, he was served a lot of food again and he finished that too. In this way he ate the entire food prepared in the kitchen of the palace, despite this his hunger was not satiated and he demanded more food from Kuber ji.
When Kuber ji, despite being the richest god, could not feed Ganesh ji fully, he felt very embarrassed. At the same time, he also understood the play of God and thus his pride was broken.
After this he apologized to Ganesh ji and Ganesh ji left from there. On the way he was riding his horse Mushak, in the middle of the way Mushak saw a snake and jumped in fear. Due to which he lost his balance and fell down. Due to falling down, all his clothes got dirty, he got up and started looking around. Then he heard the sound of laughter from somewhere, but Ganesh ji did not see anyone around. After a while his attention was drawn to the moon in the sky and he then realized that the moon god was making fun of his fall.
Seeing this, Lord Ganesha became very angry and cursed the moon and said, “O Moon! You are making fun of my helplessness like this, it does not suit you. Instead of helping me, you are laughing at me, go, I curse you that after today you will not be able to rule this huge sky and no one will be able to see you.
Due to the effect of this curse, there was darkness all around and the light of Moon God disappeared. Moon realized his mistake and started repeatedly apologizing to Lord Ganesha for his mistake.
Seeing the moon so helpless, Lord Ganesha’s anger subsided. Chandra Dev again said to Lord Ganesha, “Please forgive me and free me from this curse of yours. If I am not able to spread my light on this world then the meaning of my existence or non-existence will be lost.”
Hearing this, Ganesh ji said, “Now I cannot take back my curse even if I want to. But I can definitely reduce the effect of this curse. No one will be able to see you only on the day of Moon Amavasya in every month. After this your skills will increase, and on the day of full moon you will appear in your full form. After the full moon, your abilities will decrease again. Ganesh ji further said that today on Ganesh Chaturthi you have insulted me, if anyone sees you today then he will be a partner in sin.
After this, Lord Ganesha returned to Mount Kailash. According to beliefs, for this reason even today seeing the moon on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi is considered inauspicious.
