राजा परीक्षित ने पूछा – भगवन ! मनुष्य राजदण्ड, समाजदण्ड आदि लौकिक और शास्त्रोक्त नरकगन आदि पारलौकिक कष्टों से यह जानकर भी कि पाप उसका शत्रु है, पापवासनाओं से विवश होकर बार-बार वैसे ही कर्मों में प्रवृत हो जाता है | ऐसी अवस्था में उसके पापों का प्रायश्चित कैसे सम्भव है ? ||९|| मनुष्य कभी तो प्रायश्चित आदि के द्वारा पापों से छुटकारा पा लेता है, कभी फिर उन्हें ही करने लगता है | ऐसी स्थिति में मैं समझता हूँ कि जैसे स्नान करने के बाद धूल डाल लेने के कारण हाथी का स्नान व्यर्थ हो जाता है, वैसे ही मनुष्य का प्रायश्चित करना भी व्यर्थ है ||१०||
श्रीशुकदेवजी ने कहा – वस्तुत: कर्म के द्वारा ही कर्म का निर्बीज नाश नहीं होता; क्योंकि कर्म का अधिकारी अज्ञानी है | अज्ञान रहते पाप वासनाएँ सर्वथा नहीं मिट सकती | इसलिये सच्चा प्रायश्चित तो तत्वज्ञान ही है ||११|| जो पुरुष केवल सुपथ्य का ही सेवन करता है उसे रोग अपने वश में नहीं कर सकते | वैसे ही परीक्षित ! जो पुरुष नियमों का पालन करता है, वह धीरे-धीरे पाप-वासनाओं से मुक्त हो कल्याणप्रद तत्वज्ञान प्राप्त करने में समर्थ होता है ||१२|| जैसे बाँसों के झुरमुट में लगी आग बाँसों को जला डालती है – वैसे ही धर्मज्ञ और श्रध्दावान धीर पुरुष तपस्या, ब्रह्मचर्य, इन्द्रियदमन, मन की स्थिरता, दान, सत्य, बाहर-भीतर की पवित्रता तथा यम एवं नियम – इन नौ साधनों से मन, वाणी और शरीर द्वारा किये गये बड़े-से-बड़े पापों को भी नष्ट कर देते हैं ||१३-१४|| भगवान् की शरण में रहने वाले भक्तजन, जो बिरले ही होते हैं, केवल भक्तिके द्वारा अपने सारे पापों को उसी प्रकार भस्म कर देते हैं, जैसे सूर्य कोहरे को ||१५||

A man is compelled by sinful desires to engage in the same actions again and again, knowing that sin is his enemy, even after knowing that sin is his enemy, due to worldly sufferings like scepter, social punishment, etc. How is it possible to atone for his sins in such a condition? ||9|| Man sometimes gets rid of sins by atonement etc., sometimes starts committing them again. In such a situation, I understand that just as an elephant’s bath becomes futile due to dust being added to it, similarly it is futile to atone for a human being.||10|| Shri Shukdevji said – In fact, the seed of Karma is not destroyed by action alone; Because the officer of action is ignorant. Due to ignorance, sinful desires cannot be completely eradicated. That’s why true atonement is only philosophy ||11|| A man who consumes only good health cannot be controlled by disease. Just like tested! The man who follows the rules, gradually freed from sin-lusts, is able to attain the beneficial philosophy ||12|| Just as the fire in a clump of bamboo burns the bamboos, so the virtuous and reverent patient, penance, celibacy, sense control, stability of mind, charity, truth, inner and outer purity and Yama and Niyama – through these nine means, the mind, Destroys even the biggest sins committed by speech and body ||13-14|| Devotees who take refuge in the Lord, who are rare, by devotion alone consume all their sins in the same way as the fog of the sun ||15|| rest in upcoming posts.
