न्यायकी मर्यादा

दिल्लीका बादशाह गयासुद्दीन बाणसे निशाना मारनेका अभ्यास कर रहा था। अचानक एक बाण लक्ष्यसे भटक गया और एक बालकको लगा। बेचारा बालक बाण लगनेसे वहीं ढेर हो गया। बालककी माता दिल्लीके प्रधान काजी सिराजुद्दीनके पास रोती हुई गयी। काजीने उसे दूसरे दिन न्यायालयमें उपस्थित होनेको कह दिया।

न्यायनिष्ठ काजीने बादशाहके पास संदेश भेज दिया कि उनके विरुद्ध हत्याका अभियोग है, अतः वे न्यायालयमें उपस्थित रहें। सुलतान गयासुद्दीन साधारण वेशमें अदालत में उपस्थित हुए। काजीने उनका कोई सम्मान नहीं किया। उलटे उन्हें साधारण अपराधीकी भाँति खड़े रहनेको कहा गया। सुलतान शान्त खड़े रहे। उन्होंने अपना अपराध स्वीकार किया। बालककी मातासे माफी माँगी और उसे बहुत सा धन देनेका वचन दिया। बालककी मातासे राजीनामा लिखवाकर सुलतानने काजीको दिया।

यह सब हो जानेपर काजी न्यायासनसे उठे औरआगे आकर उन्होंने झुककर सुलतानको सलाम किया। बादशाहने अपने वस्त्रमें छिपी एक छोटी तलवार निकालकर दिखाते हुए कहा- ‘काजी साहब! आपकी आज्ञासे न्यायका सम्मान करने मैं अदालतमें आया था। अच्छा हुआ कि आपने न्यायालयकी मर्यादा रखी। यदि मैं देखता कि आप न्यायसे तनिक भी विचलित हो रहे हैं तो यह तलवार आपका गर्दन उड़ा देती।’

काजी सिराजुद्दीनने अब पीछे घूमकर अपने न्यायासनके पास रखा बेंत उठाया। वे बोले-‘जहाँपनाह! अच्छा हुआ कि आपने न्यायालयका ठीक सम्मान किया और अपराध स्वीकार कर लिया। आप तनिक भी हीला हवाला करते तो यह बेंत आज आपकी चमड़ी उधेड़ देता।’

सुलतान इससे संतुष्ट हुए। वे कह रहे थे— ‘मेरे राज्यमें ऐसे न्यायाधीश हैं जो इस बातको समझते हैं। कि न्याय सबके लिये समान है, न्यायके नियमोंसे अधिक कोई श्रेष्ठ नहीं, इसके लिये मैं परमात्माका आभार मानता हूँ।’

The emperor of Delhi, Ghiyasuddin, was practicing shooting with a bow. Suddenly an arrow deviated from the target and hit a boy. The poor boy died on the spot after being hit by an arrow. The child’s mother went crying to Sirajuddin, the chief Qazi of Delhi. The Qazi told him to appear in the court the next day.
The just judge sent a message to the king that there was an allegation of murder against him, so he should be present in the court. Sultan Ghiyasuddin appeared in the court in simple dress. The cousin did not respect him. On the contrary, he was asked to stand like an ordinary criminal. The Sultan remained silent. He accepted his crime. Apologized to the child’s mother and promised to give her a lot of money. After getting the child’s mother to write a resignation letter, the Sultan gave it to the Qazi.
When all this was done, the Qazi got up from the court and came forward and bowed down and saluted the Sultan. Taking out a small sword hidden in his clothes, the emperor said – ‘Kazi Sahib! I came to the court to respect justice by your order. It is good that you kept the dignity of the court. If I see that you are deviating even a little from justice, then this sword would have cut off your neck.’
Qazi Sirajuddin turned back and picked up the cane kept near his court. They said – ‘Jahanpanah! It is good that you respected the court and accepted the crime. If you had waved even a little, this cane would have ripped off your skin today.’
Sultan was satisfied with this. He was saying- ‘There are judges in my state who understand this. That justice is equal for all, no one is better than the rules of justice, for this I thank God.’
