दासताके विरुद्ध
विश्वविख्यात लेखिका हैरियट स्टोने अपना प्रसिद्ध उपन्यास ‘अंकल टॉम्स केबिन’ (टॉम काकाकी कुटिया) किन परिस्थितियोंके बीच लिखा, यह बहुत कम लोग जानते हैं। आम जानकारी तो इतनी ही है कि इस महान् रचनाने अमेरिकासे दासताकी अमानवीय प्रथा खत्म करनेमें अहम भूमिका निभायी थी।
स्टोने अपनी भाभीके एक पत्रका उत्तर देते हुए बताया था कि किन विपरीत परिस्थितियोंमें उन्होंने इसकी रचना की।
उन्होंने लिखा- ‘चूल्हा-चौका, कपड़े धोना, सिलाई, जूते गाँठना-जैसे कामोंकी व्यस्तता बनी ही रहती है। बच्चोंके लिये तैयारी करनी होती है। दिनभर सिपाहीकी तरह ड्यूटी देनी पड़ती है। छोटा बच्चा मेरे पास ही सोता है। वह जबतक सो नहीं जाता, कुछ भी लिख नहीं सकती। गरीबी और कार्यका दबाव बहुत है। फिर भी भाभी, सच मानना, मेरे मनमें गुलामीके खिलाफ आग धधक रही है, सो जिन्दा रही तो कुछ ऐसा जरूर लिखूँगी, जो अमेरिकाके सिरसे दासताको लादे रहनेका कलंक छुड़ा सके। गरीबी और कठिनाइयोंके बीच भी मनुष्य भीतरकी प्रेरणासे समयको बदलनेमें भूमिका निभा सकता है।’
हैरियट स्टोकी यह बात बिलकुल सही निकली। उनकी यह किताब अपने समयकी ‘बेस्ट सेलर’ साबित हुई। इसने अश्वेतोंके जीवनको लेकर श्वेतोंके बीच फैले कई तरहके भ्रम दूर किये। जब गुलामीके सवालपर अमेरिकामें गृहयुद्ध शुरू हुआ तो अमेरिकाके राष्ट्रपति अब्राहम लिंकन स्टोसे मिले। उन्हें देखते ही लिंकनके मुँहसे निकला, ‘तो यही है वह छोटी महिला, जिसने यह महान् युद्ध लड़नेकी प्रेरणा दी !’

Very few people know the circumstances under which the world famous writer Harriet Stone wrote her famous novel ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’. The common knowledge is that this great creation played an important role in ending the inhuman practice of slavery from America.
Stone, while replying to a letter from his sister-in-law, told under what adverse circumstances he composed it.
He wrote- ‘The busyness of works like chulha-chowka, washing clothes, sewing, tying shoes-all the time remains. Preparation has to be made for the children. One has to do duty like a soldier throughout the day. The little child sleeps next to me. She cannot write anything until she falls asleep. There is a lot of poverty and work pressure. Nevertheless sister-in-law, to be honest, I have a burning fire against slavery, so if I remain alive, I will definitely write something that can remove the stigma of slavery from the head of America. Even in the midst of poverty and difficulties, man can play a role in changing the times with inner inspiration.’
Harriet Stokey turned out to be absolutely right. This book of his proved to be the ‘best seller’ of his time. It removed many types of confusion spread among the whites regarding the life of blacks. When the Civil War started in America on the question of slavery, the President of America, Abraham Lincoln met Stows. On seeing her, Lincoln exclaimed, ‘So this is the little lady who inspired us to fight this great war!’
