दूषित अन्नका प्रभाव

महाभारतका युद्ध समाप्त हो गया था। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर एकच्छत्र सम्राट् हो गये थे। श्रीकृष्णचन्द्रकी सम्मति रानी द्रौपदी तथा अपने भाइयोंके साथ वे युद्धभूमिमें शरशय्यापर पड़े प्राणत्यागके लिये सूर्यके उत्तरायण होनेकी प्रतीक्षा करते परम धर्मज्ञ भीष्मपितामह के समीप आये थे। युधिष्ठिरके पूछनेपर भीष्मपितामह उन्हें वर्ण, आश्रम तथा राजा प्रजा आदिके विभिन्न धर्मीका उपदेश कर रहे थे। यह धर्मोपदेश चल ही रहा था कि रानी द्रौपदीको हँसी आ गयी। ‘बेटी! तू हँसी क्यों ?’ पितामहने उपदेश बीचमें ही तू रोककर पूछा।

द्रौपदीजीने संकुचित होकर कहा – ‘मुझसे भूल हुई। पितामह मुझे क्षमा करें।’ पितामहका इससे संतोष होना नहीं था। वे बोले-

‘बेटी कोई भी शीलवती कुलवधू गुरुजनोंके सम्मुख
अकारण नहीं हँसती तू गुणवती है, सुशीला है। तेरीहँसी अकारण हो नहीं सकती। संकोच छोड़कर तू अपने हँसनेका कारण बता।’

हाथ जोड़कर द्रौपदीजी बोलीं- ‘दादाजी! यह बहुत ही अभद्रताकी बात है; किंतु आप आज्ञा देते हैं तो कहनी पड़ेगी। आपकी आज्ञा मैं टाल नहीं सकती। आप धर्मोपदेश कर रहे थे तो मेरे मनमें यह बात आयी कि ‘आज तो आप धर्मकी ऐसी उत्तम व्याख्या कर रहे हैं; किंतु कौरवोंकी सभामें जब दुःशासन मुझे नंगी करने लगा था, तब आपका यह धर्मज्ञान कहाँ चला गया था। मुझे लगा कि यह धर्मका ज्ञान आपने पीछे सीखा है। मनमें यह बात आते ही मुझे हँसी आ गयी, आप मुझे क्षमा करें।’

पितामहने शान्तिपूर्वक समझाया-‘बेटी! इसमें क्षमा करनेकी कोई बात नहीं है। मुझे धर्मज्ञान तो उस समय भी था; परंतु दुर्योधनका अन्यायपूर्ण अन्न खानेसे मेरी बुद्धि मलिन हो गयी थी, इसीसे उस द्यूतसभामेंधर्मका ठीक निर्णय करनेमें मैं असमर्थ हो गया था। परंतु अब अर्जुनके बाणोंके लगनेसे मेरे शरीरका सारा रक्त निकल गया है। दूषित अन्नसे बने रक्तके शरीरसेबाहर निकल जानेके कारण अब मेरी बुद्धि शुद्ध हो गयी है; इससे इस समय मैं धर्मका तत्त्व ठीक समझता हूँ और उसका विवेचन कर रहा हूँ।’

The war of the Mahabharata was over. Dharmaraja Yudhisthira had become an umbrella emperor. With the consent of Sri Krishna Chandra, Queen Draupadi and her brothers, lying on the arrow bed on the battlefield, had come to the most righteous grandfather Bhishma, waiting for the sun to set in the northern hemisphere. At Yudhisthira’s request, Bhishmapitamaha was preaching to him about varna, ashram and various dharmas of kings and subjects. While this sermon was going on, Queen Draupadi laughed. ‘Daughter! Why are you laughing?’ The grandfather asked, stopping you in the middle of the sermon.
Draupadi said, shrinking, ‘I made a mistake. Grandfather, forgive me. The grandfather was not to be satisfied. They said:
‘Daughter any virtuous noblewoman in front of the teachers
You don’t laugh for no reason. You are virtuous, you are polite. Your laughter cannot be without reason. Leave no hesitation and tell me why you laughed.
With folded hands, Draupadi said, ‘Grandfather! This is very rude; But if you command it, you have to say it. I cannot avoid your command. When you were preaching, it occurred to me that ‘Today you are giving such an excellent explanation of religion; But where did your religious knowledge go when Dushasana began to strip me naked in the assembly of the Kauravas? I thought you learned this knowledge of religion later. I laughed at the thought, please forgive me.
The grandfather explained peacefully, ‘Daughter! There is nothing to forgive in this. I had theology even then; But my intelligence had been defiled by eating Duryodhana’s unjust food, so I was unable to make a proper decision on religion in that gambling assembly. But now all the blood in my body has been drained by Arjuna’s arrows. My mind is now purified because the blood made from contaminated food has left my body; This is why at this time I understand the essence of Dharma correctly and am analyzing it.
