जीवनकी प्राथमिकताएँ
दर्शनशास्त्रके एक प्रोफेसरने कक्षामें आकर मेजपर काँचकी एक बरनी रख दी। फिर उसमें टेबल-टेनिसकी गेंद भर दी और विद्यार्थियोंसे पूछा- ‘क्या बरनी पूरी तरह भर गयी ?’ उत्तर मिला-‘हाँ’। तब उन्होंने कुछ कंकड़ उस बरनीमें डालने शुरू किये और तबतक डालते रहे, जबतक वे सम्पूर्ण खाली जगहमें समा नहीं गये। उन्होंने फिर पूछा- ‘क्या बरनी पूरी तरह भर गयी ?’ फिरसे उत्तर मिला- ‘हाँ’। अब प्रोफेसर साहबने उस बरनीमें धीरे-धीरे रेत डालनी शुरू की और वह रेत भी उस बरनीके सूक्ष्म रिक्त स्थानोंमें समा गयी। तब प्रोफेसर साहबने पूछा- ‘क्या बरनी भर गयी ?’ अपने अबतकके उत्तरोंसे शर्मिन्दा विद्यार्थियोंको फिर ‘हाँ’ कहना पड़ा। अब उन्होंने मेजके नीचे रखा पानीका एक गिलास उठाया और उसे बरनीमें उड़ेल दिया और देखते-देखते उस गिलासका सारा पानी भी उस बरनीके
अतिसूक्ष्म रिक्त स्थानोंमें समा गया।
अब प्रोफेसर बोले-‘यह काँचकी बरनी हमारा जीवन है, टेबल-टेनिसकी गेंद ईश्वरका ध्यान है, कंकड़ हमारी घर-गृहस्थी, नौकरी, मकान-जैसी आवश्यकताएँ हैं, रेत हमारे शौक-मनोरंजनकी बातें हैं और पानी झगड़े, मनमुटाव, ईर्ष्या और द्वेष-जैसी बुराइयोंका प्रतीक है। अगर तुम बादवाली छोटी चीजोंसे जीवनकी बरनीको पहले भर दोगे तो पहलेवाली कोई बड़ी चीज इसमें नहीं आ सकेगी। लेकिन यदि पहलेवाली बड़ी चीजें पहले भरोगे तो बादवाली छोटी चीजोंकी गुंजाइश बनी रहेगी। इसलिये जीवनमें सबसे पहले ईश्वरपर ध्यान दो, फिर घर-गृहस्थीकी सोचो और फिर अपने शौक पूरे करो, लेकिन साथ ही यह कोशिश भी करो कि बादमें पानीरूपी बुराइयाँ किसी भी सूक्ष्म रास्तेसे आकर जीवनकी मधुर बरनीकी रग-रगमें घुसपैठ न कर लें।

A philosophy professor came into the classroom and placed a glass jar on the table. Then filled it with a table-tennis ball and asked the students- ‘Is the jar completely full?’ Got the answer – ‘yes’. Then he started pouring some pebbles into the jar and kept pouring till they filled the entire empty space. He again asked – ‘Is the bucket completely full?’ Got the answer again – ‘Yes’. Now the professor started pouring sand slowly in that bucket and that sand also got absorbed in the subtle spaces of that bucket. Then the professor asked – ‘Is the raincoat full?’ Embarrassed by their answers so far, the students had to say ‘yes’ again. Now he picked up a glass of water kept under the table and poured it into the pitcher and in no time all the water in that glass also poured into the pitcher.
Held in the tiniest of spaces.
Now the professor said – ‘This glass jar is our life, table-tennis ball is God’s meditation, pebbles are our home-household, job, house-necessities, sand is our hobby-entertainment and water is quarrels, estrangement, jealousy and hatred. It is a symbol of such evils. If you fill the jar of life first with the later small things, then none of the earlier big things will be able to enter it. But if you fill the former big things first, then there will be scope for the latter small things. That’s why first of all pay attention to God in life, then think of home and household and then fulfill your hobbies, but at the same time try that water-like evils do not come later through any subtle way and infiltrate into the veins of the sweet rain of life.
