मनुष्यका गर्व व्यर्थ है

इंगलैंडके इंजिनियरोंने वर्षों सरतोड़ परिश्रम किया था। सैकड़ों मजदूर लंबे समयतक काम करते रहे थे। प्रसिद्ध जलयान टिटैनिक जिस दिन जलमें उतारा गया, स्वयं इंगलैंडके बादशाह वहाँ उपस्थित थे। इतना विशाल, इतना भव्य और इतना सुदृढ़ जलयान कि विश्वमें किसीने कल्पना न की हो। एक पूरे नगर जितना विस्तृत था वह । उसमें विश्राम, भोजन आदिके स्थान तो थे ही, उद्यान थे, क्रीड़ामञ्च थे। फुटबॉलका मैदान था। ऐसी कोई सुविधा उसमें अप्राप्य नहीं थी जो इंगलैंडके नागरिकको पृथ्वीपर किसी नगरमें मिल सकती थी । निर्माताओंने बार-बार घोषणा की थी – ‘टिटैनिकको कोई तूफान तोड़ नहीं सकता। टिटैनिक अभेद्य है।’

विशेषज्ञोंने इस घोषणाका समर्थन किया था। समूचे इंगलैंडका मस्तक गर्वसे ऊँचा हो गया था। टिटैनिक जलमें उतरा और अमेरिकाकी यात्रापर निकला। इंगलैंडके प्रख्यात पुरुष उसमें थे। लार्ड किचनर भी उसमें थे। बहुतसे पार्लियामँटके सदस्य, लार्ड सभाके सदस्य, विख्यात पत्रकार तथा दूसरे प्रसिद्ध पुरुषोंको उनके परिवार के साथ लेकर टिटैनिकने अपनी पहिली यात्रा | प्रारम्भ की।अनन्त समुद्रके वक्षःस्थलपर गर्वसे टिटैनिक चला जा रहा था। आज विश्वने देखा कि मानव क्या कुछ कर सकता है। विशाल टिटैनिक-उसके यात्री अपने आमोद-प्रमोदमें निमग्न थे। बेतारके तारसे सूचना मिली रहना चाहिये।’

विख्यात पत्र ‘रिव्यू आफ रिव्यू’ के स्वामी मि0 स्टेड भी उसी यानमें थे। सूचना पाकर वे जहाजके कप्तानके पास गये। कप्तान हँसा- ‘व्यर्थकी बात! आप निश्चिन्त रहें ।’ हमारा टिटैनिक अजेय है। उसकी लौह दीवारें अभेद्य हैं।’

परंतु पूरे दस मिनट भी नहीं बीते थे इस बातको जब कि टिटैनिक फट गया था समुद्रमें बहते हुए एक विशाल हिमपर्वतसे टकराकर । उसमें समुद्रका जल वेगपूर्वक प्रवेश कर रहा था। यात्री जीवनकी आशा छोड़ चुके थे और कप्तान बेतारके तारपर बार-बार संदेश भेज रहा था – ‘टिटैनिक डूब रहा है। हमारी शीघ्र सहायता कीजिये ।’

मनुष्यकी विद्या – बुद्धिके गर्वका प्रतीक टिटैनिक अपने महामहिम यात्रियोंके साथ डूब गया सागरके अतल जलमें। -सु0 सिं0

The engineers of England had worked hard for years. Hundreds of laborers had been working for long hours. The day the famous ship Titanic was launched, the King of England himself was present there. Such a huge, such a grand and such a strong vessel that no one in the world has imagined. It was as wide as a whole city. There were places for rest, food etc. in it, there were gardens, there were playgrounds. There was a football field. No facility was inaccessible in it which could be found by a citizen of England in any city on earth. The makers had repeatedly declared – ‘No storm can break Titanic’. Titanic is impregnable.’
Experts supported this announcement. The whole of England was held up in pride. Titanic landed in the water and set out on a journey to America. The eminent men of England were in it. Lord Kitchener was also there. Many Members of Parliament, Members of the House of Lords, eminent journalists and other famous men with their families carried Titanic on its maiden voyage. Started. Titanic was moving proudly on the chest of the infinite sea. Today the world saw what a human can do. The huge Titanic – its passengers were engrossed in their enjoyment. Information should be received through wireless.’
Mr. Stead, the owner of the famous paper ‘Review of Review’, was also in the same vehicle. After getting the information, he went to the captain of the ship. The captain laughed – ‘Nonsense! Be sure.’ Our Titanic is invincible. Its iron walls are impenetrable.’
But not even ten minutes had passed when the Titanic exploded after colliding with a huge iceberg floating in the sea. Sea water was entering it rapidly. The passengers had given up hope of life and the captain was repeatedly sending messages on the wireless wire – ‘Titanic is sinking’. Please help us soon.’
Titanic, symbol of the pride of man’s knowledge and wisdom, sank in the bottomless waters of the ocean along with his majesty passengers. – Su 0 Sin 0
