मालवेश्वर भोजको राजसिंहासनपर बैठे कुछ ही दिन हुए थे। एक दिन प्रातः काल वे अपने रथपर समासीन होकर राजकीय उद्यानकी ओर क्रीड़ाके लिये जा रहे थे। सूर्यकी सुनहली किरणें पृथ्वीपर अपनी आभा फैला रही थीं। धारापतिका रथ बड़ी तेजीसे राजपथपर बढ़ा जा रहा था। सहसा महाराज भोजने रथ रोकनेका आदेश दिया। वे रथसे उतर पड़े एक ब्राह्मण देवताको देखकर। ब्राह्मणका नाम गोविन्द था। वह देखनेमें मनीषी और कुलीन लगता था। महाराज भोजने सादर अभिवादन किया, ब्राह्मणने दोनों नेत्र मूँद लिये। राजा भोज उसके इस आचरणसे विस्मय में पड़ गये।
“न तो आपने स्वस्ति वाचन किया और न आशीर्वाद ही दिया। आपने मुझे देखते ही दोनों नेत्र बंद कर लिये। कारण बतानेकी कृपा कर सकते हैं?’ महाराज भोजने बड़े आदरसे जिज्ञासा प्रकट की।
‘आप वैष्णव हैं, आप अनजानमें भी दूसरोंको पीड़ा नहीं पहुँचा सकते हैं, न ब्राह्मणोंके प्रति उत्पात कर सकते हैं; इसलिये मुझे आपसे भय नहीं है। आप किसीको कुछ दान भी नहीं देते, लोकोक्ति है कि सबेरे सबेरे कृपणका मुख देखकर नेत्र बंद कर लेनेचाहिये। अप्रगल्भकी विद्या, कृपणका धन और कायरका बाहुबल – ये तीनों पृथ्वीपर व्यर्थ हैं। राजाके पा सम्पत्ति भले न हो; पर यदि वह गुणग्राही है तो सेव्य है। दधीचि, शिबि और कर्ण आदि स्वर्ग जानेपर भी अपने दानके बलपर पृथ्वीपर अमर हैं; लोग उनका यश गाते हैं, उनकी उदारता और दानशीलताकी प्रशंसा करते हैं। महाराज ! यह देह नश्वर है, अनित्य है; इसलिये कीर्ति ही उपार्जनीय है।’ गोविन्दने महाराज भोजसे अत्यन्त खरा सत्य कहा l
‘मैंने आपके वचनामृतसे परम तृप्ति पायी है। आपने अत्यन्त कोमल ढंगसे मेरे हितकी बात कही है। संसारमें प्रशंसा करनेवाले तो अनेक लोग मिलते हैं; पर आप-जैसे मनीषी और हितैषी कम ही दीख पड़ते हैं। आपने मेरे हितकी बात कहकर मेरी आँखें खोल दी हैं। आपने मेरा बड़ा उपकार किया है; वास्तवमें ऐसी औषध नहीं मिलती है, जो हितकर और साथ-ही-साथ स्वादयुक्त भी हो। आपने मेरी दान-वृत्ति जगाकर मुझे नरकमें जानेसे बचा लिया।’ राजा भोजने ब्राह्मणकी सत्कथन-प्रवृत्तिकी सराहना की तथा एक लाख रुपयेसे पुरस्कृत किया। उसके लिये राजप्रासादके दरवाजे सदाके लिये खोल दिये गये। रा0 श्री0 (भोजप्रबन्ध)
Malveshwar Bhoj had only been sitting on the throne for a few days. One day in the morning, sitting on his chariot, he was going towards the state park for sports. The golden rays of the sun were spreading their aura on the earth. Dharapati’s chariot was moving very fast on the highway. Suddenly Maharaj Bhojan ordered to stop the chariot. Seeing a Brahmin deity, he got down from the chariot. The name of the Brahmin was Govind. He looked wise and noble. Maharaj Bhojane greeted with respect, the Brahmin closed both his eyes. King Bhoj was astonished by his conduct.
“Neither did you chant Swasti nor did you give blessings. You closed both your eyes as soon as you saw me. Can you please tell the reason?” Maharaj Bhojane expressed his curiosity with great respect.
‘You are a Vaishnava, you cannot hurt others even unknowingly, nor can you misbehave with Brahmins; That’s why I am not afraid of you. You don’t even donate anything to anyone, there is a proverb that seeing the face of a miser every morning, you should close your eyes. The knowledge of the ignorant, the wealth of the miser and the physical strength of the coward – all these three are useless on earth. The king may not have wealth; But if he is virtuous then he is serviceable. Dadhichi, Shibi and Karna etc. are immortal on earth on the strength of their donations even after going to heaven; People sing his praises, praise his generosity and charity. King ! This body is mortal, impermanent; That’s why only fame can be earned. Govind told the most honest truth to Maharaj Bhoj.
‘ I have found ultimate satisfaction in your words. You have spoken in a very gentle manner in my interest. There are many people who praise in the world; But thinkers and well-wishers like you are rarely seen. You have opened my eyes by speaking in my interest. You have done me a great favor; In fact, such a medicine is not available, which is beneficial and at the same time tasty. You saved me from going to hell by awakening my charity. King Bhojan praised the Brahmin’s good-talking attitude and rewarded him with one lakh rupees. The doors of Rajprasad were opened for him forever. Ra0 Mr. (Food Management)
