एक साधकने किसी महात्मा के पास जाकर उनसे । प्रार्थना की कि ‘मुझे आत्मसाक्षात्कारका उपाय बताइये।’ महात्माने एक मन्त्र बताकर कहा कि ‘एकान्तमें रहकर एक सालतक इस मन्त्रका जाप करो; जिस दिन वर्ष पूरा हो, उस दिन नहाकर मेरे पास आना।’ साधकने वैसा ही किया। वर्ष पूरा होनेके दिन महात्माजीने वहाँ झाडू देनेवाली भंगिनसे कह दिया कि ‘जब वह नहा धोकर मेरे पास आने लगे, तब उसके पास जाकर शासे गर्दा उड़ा देना।’ भगिनने वैसा ही किया। साधकको क्रोध आ गया और वह भंगिनको मारने दौड़ा। भंगिन भाग गयी। वह फिरसे नहाकर महात्माजीके पास आया महात्माजीने कहा- भैया! अभी तो तुम सौंपकी तरह काटने दौडते हो। सालभर और बैठकर मन्त्र जप करो, तब आना!’ साधकको बात कुछ बुरी तो लगी, पर वह गुरुकी आज्ञा समझकर चला गया और मन्त्रजप करने लगा।
दूसरा वर्ष जिस दिन पूरा होता था, उस दिनमहात्माजीने उसी भंगिनसे कहा कि ‘आज जब वह आने लगे, तब उसके पैरसे जरा झाड़ छुआ देना ।’ उसने कहा, ‘मुझे मारेगा तो ?’ महात्माजी बोले, ‘आज मारेगा नहीं, बककर ही रह जायगा।’ भंगिनने जाकर झाड़ू छुआ दिया। साधकने झल्लाकर दस-पाँच कठोर शब्द सुनाये और फिर नहाकर वह महात्माजीके पास आया । महात्माजीने कहा- ‘भाई! काटते तो नहीं, पर अभी साँपकी तरह फुफकार तो मारते ही हो। ऐसी अवस्थामें आत्मसाक्षात्कार कैसे होगा। जाओ, एक वर्ष और जप करो। इस बार साधकको अपनी भूल दिखायी दी और मनमें बड़ी लज्जा हुई। उसने इसको महात्माजीकी कृपा समझा और वह मन-ही-मन उनकी प्रशंसा करता हुआ अपने स्थानपर आ गया । ‘
उसने सालभर फिर मन्त्र जप किया। तीसरा वर्ष पूरा होनेके दिन महात्माजीने भंगिनसे कहा कि ‘आज वह आने लगे तब कूड़ेकी टोकरी उसपर उड़ेल देना । अब वह खीझेगा भी नहीं ।’ भंगिनने वैसा ही किया।साधकका चित्त निर्मल हो चुका था । उसे क्रोध तं आया ही नहीं। उसके मनमें उलटे भंगिनके प्रति कृतज्ञताकी भावना जाग्रत् हो गयी। उसने हाथ जोड़कर भंगिनसे कहा-‘माता! तुम्हारा मुझपर बड़ा ही उपकार है, जो तुम मेरे अंदरके एक बड़े भारी दोषको दूर करनेके लिये तीन सालसे बराबर प्रयत्न कर रही हो । तुम्हारी कृपासे आज मेरे मनमें जरा भी दुर्भाव नहीं आया। इससे मुझे ऐसी आशा है कि मेरे गुरु महाराजआज मुझको अवश्य उपदेश करेंगे।’ इतना कहकर वह स्नान करके महात्माजीके पास जाकर उनके चरणोंपर गिर पड़ा। महात्माजीने उठाकर उसको हृदयसे लगा लिया। मस्तकपर हाथ फिराया और ब्रह्मके स्वरूपका उपदेश किया। शुद्ध अन्तःकरणमें तुरंत ही उपदेशके अनुसार धारणा हो गयी। अज्ञान मिट गया। ज्ञान तो था ही, आवरण दूर होनेसे उसकी अनुभूति हो गयी और साधक निहाल हो गया।
A seeker goes to a Mahatma and asks him. Prayed that ‘Tell me the method of self-realization.’ The Mahatma told a mantra and said, ‘ Chant this mantra for one year while living in solitude; On the day the year is over, come to me after taking a bath.’ The seeker did the same. On the day of completion of the year, Mahatma ji said to the sweeper there that ‘When she starts coming to me after washing her bath, then go to her and blow away the dust.’ Sister did the same. Sadhak got angry and he ran to kill Bhangin. Bhangin ran away. He again came to Mahatmaji after taking bath. Mahatmaji said – Brother! Right now you run to bite like a handmaid. Sit and chant the mantra for the whole year, then come!’ Sadhak felt a bit bad, but he went away understanding the Guru’s order and started chanting mantras.
On the day when the second year was completed, Mahatma told the same Bhangin that ‘When he starts coming today, then touch his feet a little bit.’ He said, ‘Will you kill me?’ Mahatmaji said, ‘He will not kill today, he will remain a talker.’ Bhangin went and touched the broom. The seeker uttered ten or five harsh words in a fit of rage and then after taking a bath he came to the Mahatma. Mahatmaji said – ‘Brother! You don’t bite, but now you hiss like a snake. In such a situation, how will self-realization happen? Go on, chant for one more year. This time the seeker was shown his mistake and felt very ashamed. He took it as Mahatma ji’s grace and came back to his place praising him in his heart. ,
He chanted the mantra again for the whole year. On the day of completion of the third year, Mahatmaji told Bhangin that ‘when he starts coming today, throw the garbage basket on him. Now he will not even bother. Bhangin did the same. Sadhak’s mind had become pure. He did not feel angry at all. A feeling of gratitude awakened in his mind towards the opposite Bhangin. He folded hands and said to Bhangin – ‘Mother! It is a great favor of yours to me that you have been trying equally for three years to remove a big defect inside me. By your grace today I did not have any ill will in my mind. Due to this, I have the hope that my Guru Maharaj will definitely preach to me today. Having said this, he took bath and went to Mahatmaji and fell at his feet. Mahatmaji picked him up and hugged him. He waved his hand on the head and preached the form of Brahma. Immediately in a pure heart, according to the preaching, there was a perception. Ignorance has disappeared. Knowledge was there anyway, when the cover was removed, it was experienced and the seeker became blissful.
