बंगालके एक छोटे से रेलवे स्टेशनपर ट्रेन खड़ी हुई। स्वच्छ धुले वस्त्र पहिने एक युवकने ‘कुली! कुली!’ पुकारना प्रारम्भ किया। युवकके पास कोई भारी सामान नहीं था। केवल एक छोटी पेटी थी। भला, देश के छोटे-से स्टेशनपर कुली कहीं परंतु एक अधेड़ व्यक्ति साधारण ग्रामीण जैसे कपड़े पहिनेयुवकके पास आ गया। युवकने उसे कुली समझकर कहा- ‘तुमलोग बड़े सुस्त होते हो। ले चलो इसे । ‘ उस व्यक्तिने पेटी उठा ली और युवकके पीछे चुपचाप चल पड़ा। घर पहुँचकर युवकने पेटी रखवा ली और मजदूरी देने लगा। उस व्यक्तिने कहा – “धन्यवाद ! इसकी आवश्यकता नहीं है।”क्यों?’ युवकने आश्चर्यसे पूछा। किंतु उसी समय युवकके बड़े भाई घरमेंसे निकले और उन्होंने उस व्यक्तिको प्रणाम किया। अब युवकको पता लगा कि वह जिससे पेटी उठवाकर लाया है, वे तो बंगालके प्रतिष्ठित विद्वान् ईश्वरचन्द्र विद्यासागर हैं। युवक उनकेपैरोंपर गिर पड़ा।
विद्यासागर बोले- ‘मेरे देशवासी व्यर्थ अभिमान छोड़ दें और समझ लें कि अपने हाथों अपना काम करना गौरवकी बात है। वे स्वावलम्बी बनें, यही मेरी मजदूरी है।’ -सु0 सिं0
The train stopped at a small railway station in Bengal. A young man wearing clean washed clothes said ‘Coolie! Coolie!’ Started calling. The young man did not have any heavy luggage. There was only a small box. Well, at a small station in the country, a coolie somewhere, but a middle-aged man came to a young man dressed like an ordinary villager. The young man mistook him for a porter and said – ‘You people are very lazy. Let’s take it ‘ The man picked up the box and silently followed the young man. After reaching home, the young man got the box kept and started paying wages. The person said – “Thank you! It is not required.” Why? the young man asked in surprise. But at the same time the elder brother of the young man came out of the house and he bowed down to that person. Now the young man came to know that the person from whom he had brought the box was Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, the eminent scholar of Bengal. The young man fell at his feet.
Vidyasagar said- ‘My countrymen should give up vain pride and understand that it is a matter of pride to do one’s work with one’s own hands. They should become self-reliant, this is my wage. – Su 0 Sin 0
