जीवन-व्रत

‘आपको अवश्य जाना चाहिये; सिकन्दर उदार है; अभी कल ही उसने पोरस (पुरु) महाराजके साथ राजाका-सा बर्तावकर जो उदारता दिखायी है, उसके कारण भारतीय इतिहासमें वह अमर हो गया।’ महात्मा मन्दनीसने कालानूस (कल्याण) को अपने दर्शनसे धन्य करनेकी प्रेरणा दी। दोनों उच्च कोटिके संत थे। तक्षशिलासे तीन मीलकी दूरीपर नदीतटके एक नितान्त निर्जन वनमें एकान्त सेवन करते थे। मृगचर्म औरमिट्टीके करवा तथा भिक्षाद्वारा प्राप्त अन्न ही उनके जीवन-निर्वाहके साधन थे। उनका आचरण अत्यन्त तपोमय था । यूनानी शासक सिकन्दरकी बड़ी इच्छा थी – उनके दर्शनकी ।

‘सिकन्दरका अलंकार महती सेना है; संतमण्डलीसे उसका क्या काम है ? वह नदी, पहाड़ और पृथ्वीपर शासन करनेवाला है; हमारा मन और आत्मापर शासन है। यह कदापि उचित नहीं है कि मैं उसके साथ भारतसे बाहरजाऊँ।’ कालानूस इस तरह निवेदन कर ही रहे थे कि सिकन्दरने घोड़ेसे उतरकर दोनों संतोंका अभिवादन किया। यूनानी विजेता कुशके आसनपर बैठ गया।

‘मैं समझता हूँ कि मेरे साथ आपको वह शान्ति नहीं मिलेगी जो आप भरतखण्डके पवित्र पञ्चनद देशमें प्राप्त कर रहे हैं, पर आप ही बतायें कि सुकरात, प्लेटो और अरिस्टाटिल ( अरस्तू) तथा पीथागोरसका देश यूनान किस प्रकार भारतीय ज्ञानामृत सागरमें स्नान कर सकेगा? आप मेरे लिये नहीं तो यूनानके असंख्य प्राणियोंको ज्ञान देनेके लिये अवश्य चलें। एक विदेशी जगद्गुरु भारतसे दूसरी भिक्षा ही क्या माँग सकता है ?’ सिकन्दरने संतकी कृपादृष्टिकी याचना की और मन्दनीसके संकेतपर कालानूसने सिकन्दरके साथ जानेकी स्वीकृति दे दी।

‘ज्वराक्रान्त होना हमारे जीवनकी पहली घटना है, सिकन्दर!” तिहत्तर सालकी अवस्थावाले संतने फारसकेशिबिरमें अपनी बीमारीका विवरण दिया। जलवायु अनुकूल न होनेसे वे रुग्ण थे।

‘पर आपका जीवन-व्रत तो अमित भयंकर है। यह तो आपके देशके महात्माओंका हठमात्र है कि रुग्ण होनेपर शरीर त्याग कर दिया जाय।’ सिकन्दर बड़े आश्चर्यमें था

‘यह हठ नहीं, जीवनकी कठोर वास्तविकता है। हमारे सदाचार और ब्रह्मचर्य पालनमें इतना बल है रुग्णता क्या – मृत्युको भी एक बार लौट जाना पड़ता है।’ भारतीय महात्मा कालानूसने चिता प्रज्वलित करनेका संकेत किया।

‘यह शरीर अपवित्र है, इसमें पवित्रतम चिन्मय तत्त्व – आत्मा (परमात्मा) का वास अब मेरे लिये सह्य नहीं है। रोग पापसे आते हैं। मैं अपने पाप- शरीरको सजीव नहीं रख सकता।’ कालानूस जलती चितामें बैठ गये। लाल-लाल लपटोंने गगनके अधर चूम लिये।

‘You must go; Alexander is generous; Just yesterday he became immortal in Indian history because of the magnanimity he showed to Porus (Puru) Maharaj by treating him like a king. Mahatma Mandanis inspired to bless Kalanus (Kalyan) with his darshan. Both were saints of high order. At a distance of three miles from Takshashila, he used to eat in solitude in a completely deserted forest on the banks of the river. Antelope skin and clay and food obtained by alms were the only means of their life. His behavior was very austere. The great desire of the Greek ruler Alexander was to visit him.
‘A great army is the adornment of Alexander; What is his business with the congregation? He is the ruler of the river, the mountain and the earth; We have control over our mind and soul. It is not at all proper that I should go out of India with him.’ Kalanus was requesting in such a way that Alexander got down from his horse and greeted both the saints. The Greek conqueror sat on the seat of Kush.
‘I understand that with me you will not get the peace that you are getting in the holy Panchnad country of Bharatkhand, but you tell me how Greece, the country of Socrates, Plato and Aristatil (Aristotle) ​​and Pythagoras will be able to bathe in the Indian ocean of knowledge? If not for me, then you must go to give knowledge to the innumerable creatures of Greece. What other alms can a foreign Jagadguru beg from India?’ Sikandar begged for the saint’s favor and on Mandanis’s signal, Kalanus gave permission to go with Sikandar.
“Having a fever is the first event of our life, Alexander!” The seventy-three year old saint described his illness in the Persian camp. He was ill because the climate was not favorable.
‘ But your life-fasting is very dangerous. It is just the stubbornness of the Mahatmas of your country that the body should be sacrificed when sick.’ Alexander was in awe
This is not stubbornness, it is the harsh reality of life. There is so much strength in our virtue and celibacy, what about illness – even death has to return once.’ The Indian sage Kalanu gave the signal to light the pyre.
‘This body is unholy, the abode of the purest Chinmaya Tattva – Atman (God) in it is no longer tolerable for me. Diseases come from sin. I cannot keep my sinful body alive.’ Kalanus sat on the burning pyre. Red-red flames kissed the sides of the sky.
