उदार स्वामी

गुजरातके धोलनगरके नरेश वीरधवल एक दिन भोजन करके पलंगपर लेटे थे और उनका सेवक राजाके पैर दबा रहा था। राजाने नेत्र बंद कर लिये थे। उन्हें निद्रित समझकर सेवकने उनके पैरकी अँगुलीसे रत्नजटित अँगूठी निकालकर मुखमें छिपा ली। नरेशने अँगूठीकी कोई चर्चा नहीं की। उन्होंने वैसी ही दूसरी अँगूठी पहन ली। दूसरे दिन पैर दबाते समय सेवकने फिर अँगूठी निकाली तो राजा बोले-‘अब यह अँगूठी तो रहने दो। कल जो अँगूठी तुमने ली है, वह तो मैं तुम्हें दे चुका ‘

सेवक राजाके पैरोंपर गिर पड़ा। उदार नरेश बोले – ‘डरो मत! दोष मेरा ही है। थोड़े वेतनसे तुम्हारी आवश्यकता पूरी नहीं होती, इसलिये तुम चोरी करनेपर विवश हुए हो। मुझे तुम्हारी आवश्यकताको पहले समझ लेना चाहिये था। आजसे तुम्हारा वेतन दुगुना किया गया।

King Veerdhaval of Dholnagar in Gujarat was lying on the bed one day after eating and his servant was pressing the king’s feet. The king had closed his eyes. Thinking that he was sleeping, the servant took out the gem studded ring from his toe and hid it in his mouth. The king didn’t mention the ring. He wore the same second ring. On the second day, while pressing the feet, the servant again took out the ring, then the king said – ‘Now leave this ring at least. I have already given you the ring you took yesterday.
The servant fell at the feet of the king. The generous king said – ‘Don’t be afraid! The fault is mine. Your needs are not met with a small salary, so you are forced to steal. I should have understood your requirement earlier. From today your salary has been doubled.
