खेतड़ीके महाराजके साथ भेंट
एक निरभिमानी जीवन
एक और चित्ताकर्षक घटना तब घटी, जब विवेकानन्द खेतड़ीके महाराजके यहाँ रुके हुए थे। खेतड़ीनरेश अजीतसिंह स्वामीजीके महान् प्रशंसक एवं शिष्य हो गये थे। एक शामको महाराजके मनोरंजनके लिये एक नर्तकीकी संगीतशाला आयोजित की गयी थी। स्वामीजी पासमें ही एक तम्बूमें ठहरे हुए थे, उन्हें संगीत सुननेके लिये आमन्त्रित किया गया। परंतु उन्होंने कहला भेजा कि ‘संन्यासी होनेके नाते वे संगीत सभामें जाना नहीं चाहेंगे।’ इससे उस नर्तकीकी भावनाको ठेस लगी। नर्तकीने स्वामीजीको मानो उत्तर देनेके लिये भक्त कवि सूरदासका निम्नलिखित पद गाया
प्रभु मेरे अवगुन चित न धरो ।
समदरसी प्रभु नाम तिहारो अपने पनहि करो ॥ इक लोहा पूजा में राखत, इक घर बधिक परो ।
यह दुविधा पारस नहिं जानत कंचन करत खरो
एक नदिया, इक नार कहावत मैलो नीर भरो। जब मिलिकै दोठ एक वरन भए सुरसरि नाम परो ॥प्रभु मेरे अवगुन चित न धरो।
सन्ध्याकी नीरवतामें गहरी चोट खायी हुई उस नर्तकीकी आवाज स्वामीजीके कानोंतक पहुँच गयी और उनके मनमें भावनाओंका परिवर्तन आ गया, जिससे उनकी आँखें एक महान् आध्यात्मिक सत्यकी ओर खुल गयीं, जिसका वे उपदेश तो दे रहे थे, परंतु जिसे वे भूल से गये थे। स्वामीजीने नर्तकीका सम्मान किया।

Another interesting incident happened when Vivekananda was staying with the Maharaja of Khetri. Khetri King Ajit Singh had become a great admirer and disciple of Swamiji. One evening a dancer’s concert was organized for the entertainment of Maharaj. Swamiji was staying in a tent nearby, he was invited to listen to the music. But he sent word that ‘being a sannyasin, he would not like to go to the sangeet sabha’. This hurt the feelings of that dancer. The dancer sang the following verse of Bhakta poet Surdas to answer Swamiji as if
Lord, don’t be disrespectful to me.
Samdarsi Prabhu Naam Tiharo Apne Panhi Karo ॥ Asht in ek loha puja, ek ghar badhik paro.
Paras does not know this dilemma
Ek nadiya, ek naar proverb melo neer bharo. When the lips meet, but if there is Sursari’s name, then Lord, don’t keep my demerit in mind.
In the stillness of the evening, the voice of the deeply struck dancer reached Swamiji’s ears and a change of feeling took place in his mind, which opened his eyes to a great spiritual truth which he had been preaching but which he had forgotten. Swamiji respected the dancer.
