हनुमान्जी जब लङ्का-दहन करके लौट रहे थे, तब उन्हें समुद्रोल्लङ्घन, सीतान्वेषण, रावण-मद-मर्दन एवं लङ्का-दहन आदि कार्योंका कुछ गर्व हो गया । दयालु भगवान् इसे ताड़ गये। हनुमान्जी घोर गर्जना करते हुए जा ही रहे थे कि रास्तेमें उन्हें बड़ी प्यास लग गयी। महेन्द्राचलपर उन्होंने दृष्टि दौड़ायी तो उनकी दृष्टि एकमुनिपर गयी, जो शान्त बैठे हुए थे। उनके पास जाकर हनुमान्जीने कहा-‘ ‘मुने! मैं श्रीरामचन्द्रजीका सीतान्वेषणका कार्य करके लौटा आ रहा हूँ। मुझे बड़ी प्यास लग रही है; थोड़ा जल दीजिये या किसी जलाशयका पता बताइये।’ मुनिने उन्हें तर्जनी अङ्गुलिसे एक जलाशयकी ओर इशारा किया। हनुमान्जी श्रीसीताजीकी दी हुईचूड़ामणि, मुद्रिका और एक ब्रह्माजीका दिया हुआ पत्र – यह सब मुनिके आगे रखकर जल पीने चले गये। इतनेमें एक दूसरा बंदर आया, उसने इन सभी वस्तुओंको उठाकर मुनिके कमण्डलुमें डाल दिया। तबतक हनुमानजी जल पीकर लौटे। उन्होंने अपनी वस्तुओंके सम्बन्धमें पूछा। मुनिने भाँहोंके इशारेसे उन्हें कमण्डलुकी ओर निर्देश किया। हनुमानजीने चुप-चाप जाकर कमण्डलुमें देखा तो ठीक उसी प्रकारकी रामनामाङ्कित हजारों मुद्रिकाएँ दिखलायी पड़ीं। अब वे बहुत घबराये। उन्होंने पूछा, ‘ये सब मुद्रिकाएँ आपको कहाँसे मिलीं तथा इनमें मेरी मुद्रिका कौन-सी है ?’
मुनिने उत्तर दिया कि जब-जब श्रीरामावतार होता है और सीता हरणके पश्चात् हनुमान्जी पता लगाकर लौटते हैं, तब शोध-मुद्रिका यहीं छोड़ जाते हैं। वे ही सब मुद्रिकाएँ इसमें पड़ी हैं।’ अब तो हनुमान्जीका गर्व गल गया। उन्होंने पूछा-‘मुने! कितने राघव यहाँ आयेहैं?’ मुनिने कहा, ‘यह तो मुद्रिकाओंकी गणनासे हो पता चल सकता है।’ पर हनुमानजीने देखा तो | मुद्रिकाओंका कोई अन्त नहीं था। उन्होंने सोचा, ‘भला | मुझ जैसे कितने लोगोंने ऐसे कार्य कर रखे हैं, इसमें मेरी क्या गणना।’ फिर वे वहाँसे चलकर अङ्गदादिसं मिलकर प्रभुके पास आये। वहाँ वे अत्यन्त डरते हुए कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो! मुझसे एक बड़ा अपराध बन गया है।’ और फिर सारा मुनि – वृत्तान्त सुना दिया । प्रभुने कहा- ‘भद्र! मुनिरूपसे तुम्हारे कल्याणके लिये मैंने ही वह कौतुक रचा था। देखो! वह मुद्रिका तो मेरी अङ्गुलिमें ही लगी है।’
अब श्रीअञ्जनीनन्दन, केसरीकिशोर हनुमतलालका गर्व सर्वथा नष्ट हो गया। उन्होंने प्रभुके विष्णुस्वरूपपर | विश्वास किया और बड़ी ही श्रद्धासे वे उनके चरणोंपर गिर गये और चिर कालतक लेटे रहे।

When Hanumanji was returning after burning Lanka, he became somewhat proud of the works like crossing the ocean, Sitanveshan, Ravana-Mad-Mardan and Lanka-Dahan etc. Merciful God took it away. Hanumanji was going while roaring loudly that he felt very thirsty on the way. When he looked at Mahendrachal, his eyes went to Ekmuni, who was sitting quietly. Hanumanji went to him and said – “Mune! I am returning after doing the work of Shriramchandraji’s sitanveshan. I am very thirsty; Give some water or tell the address of a reservoir.’ The sage pointed to a water body with his forefinger. Hanuman ji kept the chudamani, seal and a letter given by Brahma ji given by Shri Sita ji – all these in front of the monk went to drink water. Meanwhile, another monkey came, he picked up all these things and put them in the sage’s kamandalu. Till then Hanumanji returned after drinking water. He asked about his things. The sage directed him towards Kamandalukhi with the gesture of his eyebrows. When Hanuman ji quietly went and looked in the Kamandalu, he saw thousands of similar coins named Ram. Now they are very scared. He asked, ‘Where did you get all these rings and which one is mine?’
The sage replied that whenever Shri Rama appears and Hanumanji returns after abducting Sita, he leaves the research ring here. All those rings are lying in it. Now Hanumanji’s pride has melted. He asked – ‘Mune! How many Raghavs have come here?’ The sage said, ‘It can be known by counting the rings.’ But Hanumanji saw it. There was no end to the rings. He thought, ‘Well. How many people like me have done such things, what is my calculation in this.’ Then they walked from there together with Angdadis and came to the Lord. There they started saying in great fear – ‘Lord! I have become a bigger crime. And then narrated the whole story of the sage. The Lord said – ‘ Gentleman! I created that praise for your welfare as a sage. See! That ring is on my finger only.’
Now the pride of Shri Anjaninandan, Kesrikishor Hanumatlal has been completely destroyed. He on Lord Vishnu’s form. He believed and with great devotion he fell at his feet and lay down for ever.
