सच्चा अध्ययन

एक विद्वान् ब्राह्मण एक धर्मात्मा नरेशके यहाँ पहुँचे। उनका सत्कार हुआ। ब्राह्मणने कहा- ‘राजन् ! आपकी इच्छा हो तो मैं आपको श्रीमद्भागवत श्रवण कराऊँ । ‘

नरेशने उनकी ओर देखा और बोले- ‘आप कुछ दिन और श्रीमद्भागवतका अध्ययन करके आवें।’ बहुत बुरा लगा ब्राह्मणको। वे उठकर चले आये। परंतु उन्होंने श्रीमद्भागवतका अध्ययन छोड़ा नहीं। पूरा ग्रन्थ कण्ठस्थ करके वे फिर नरेशके पास गये। किंतु उन्हें फिर वही उत्तर मिला- ‘आप कुछ दिन और श्रीमद्भागवतका अध्ययन करें।’

एक बार, दो बार, तीन बार-ब्राह्मणको यही उत्तर राजा देते रहे, जब भी वे उनके यहाँ गये। अन्तमें वे निराश हो गये। अचानक श्रीमद्भागवतका पाठ करते समय वैराग्यबोधक श्लोकोंपर उनका ध्यान गया।उनके चित्तने कहा-‘छि: ! मैं एक तुच्छ नरेशके यहाँ बार-बार लोभवश जाता हूँ और साक्षात् श्रीकृष्ण स्वरूप अनन्त दयामय श्रीमद्भागवत मेरे सामने हैं, उनकी शरण मैं नहीं लेता।’ ब्राह्मण तो अब श्रीमद्भागवतके पाठमें ही तन्मय हो गये।

बहुत दिन बीत गये और ब्राह्मण नहीं आये तब राजाने उन्हें बुलानेको दूत भेजा; किंतु अब नि:स्पृह ब्राह्मण उनके यहाँ क्यों जाने लगे थे । अन्तमें राजा स्वयं उनकी झोंपड़ीमें पधारे। उन्होंने कहा-‘ब्रह्मन् ! आप मुझे क्षमा करें। श्रीमद्भागवतका ठीक अध्ययन आपने अब किया है। वैराग्य और भगवद्भक्ति न आयी तो भागवत पढ़नेसे लाभ क्या। आप पाठ करें, अब यहीं आपके चरणोंमें बैठकर मैं आपके श्रीमुखसे श्रीमद्भागवत श्रवण करूँगा।’

A scholar Brahmin reached the place of a pious king. He was felicitated. Brahmin said – ‘ Rajan! If you wish, I will make you listen to Shrimad Bhagwat. ,
The king looked at him and said – ‘You come back after studying Shrimad Bhagwat for a few more days.’ Brahmin felt very bad. He got up and left. But he did not give up the study of Shrimad Bhagwat. Having memorized the entire book, he again went to the king. But he again got the same answer – ‘You study Shrimad Bhagwat for a few more days.’
Once, twice, thrice – this was the answer the king kept giving to the Brahmin, whenever he went to his place. In the end they got disappointed. Suddenly, while reciting Shrimad Bhagwat, his attention was drawn to the verses of Vairagyabodh. I go to the place of a despicable king again and again out of greed and I do not take refuge in Shrimad Bhagwat, the ever-merciful form of Shri Krishna, before me.’ Brahmins have now become engrossed in the recitation of Shrimad Bhagwat.
Many days passed and the Brahmins did not come, then the king sent a messenger to call them; But now why did the disinterested Brahmins start going to his place. At last the king himself came to his hut. He said – ‘Brahman! You may excuse me. You have now studied Shrimad Bhagwat properly. If you don’t get disinterest and devotion to God, then what is the use of reading Bhagwat. You recite, now sitting here at your feet, I will listen to Shrimad Bhagwat from your mouth.’
