नींवके पत्थर
बात सन् 1928-29 ई0की है। लालबहादुर शास्त्री लोक-सेवक मण्डलकी जिम्मेदारियाँ लेकर इलाहाबाद पहुँचे। छोटा कद, दुबली-पतली काठी, सिरपर टोपी, पैरोंमें देशी जूते, हँसमुख स्वभाव। उनका कहना था कि किसी समाचार-पत्रमें उनके विवरणको न छापा जाय। उनके इस विशेष आग्रहको देखकर कुछ मित्रोंने उनसे एक दिन पूछा – ‘आखिर आपको अखबारोंमें नाम छपनेसे क्यों परहेज है ?’ शास्त्रीजीने सवालको टालनेकी कोशिश की, पर उपस्थित मित्रसमूहने पीछा नहीं छोड़ा। बहुत जिद करनेपर शास्त्रीजी बोले कि ‘लोकसेवक मण्डलके कार्यके लिये दीक्षा देते समय लाला लाजपत रायजीने कहा था—’लालबहादुर! ताजमहलमें दो प्रकारके पत्थर लगे हैं। एक बढ़िया किस्मका संगमरमर है, | उसीसे मेहराब और गुम्बद बने हैं। उसीसे जालियाँ काटी गयी हैं, उसीसे मीनाकारी की गयी है। उन्हींसे रंग बिरंगे बेल-बूटे भी भरे गये हैं। वे देखने और सराहनेके लिये ही हैं। दूसरी तरफ वे पत्थर हैं, जो टेढ़े-मेढ़े और बेढंगे-से हैं। वे सब नींवमें दबे पड़े हैं। उनका काम ताजमहलको खड़ा करना है। यदि हम ही प्रचारकी लिप्सामें पड़ गये तो नींवका पत्थर कौन साथी बनना चाहेगा ?”

It is about the year 1928-29 AD. Lal Bahadur Shastri reached Allahabad with the responsibilities of Lok Sevak Mandal. Small stature, slim saddle, cap on head, country shoes on feet, cheerful nature. He said that his details should not be published in any newspaper. Seeing this special request of his, some friends asked him one day – ‘Why are you refraining from publishing your name in the newspapers?’ Shastri tried to avoid the question, but the group of friends present did not give up. On much insistence, Shastriji said that ‘ while giving initiation for the work of Lok Sevak Mandal, Lala Lajpat Raiji had said – ‘Lal Bahadur! There are two types of stones in the Taj Mahal. It is a fine quality marble. Arches and domes are made from that. Nets have been cut from it, Meenakari has been done from it. Colorful vines are also filled with them. They are there to be seen and appreciated. On the other side are those stones, which are crooked and clumsy. They are all buried in the foundation. His job is to build the Taj Mahal. If we are the ones who are caught in the lust of publicity, then who would like to be the partner of the foundation stone?
