एकमेलके युद्धके बाद नेपोलियन आस्ट्रियाकी राजधानी वियना नगरके पास पहुँचे। उन्होंने संधिका झंडा लेकर एक दूत नगरमें भेजा; किंतु नगरके लोगोंने उस दूतको मार डाला। इस समाचारसे नेपोलियन क्रुद्ध हो उठे। उनकी अपार सेनाने चारों ओरसे नगरको घेर लिया। फ्रांसीसी तोपें आग उगलने लगीं। नगरके भवन ध्वस्त होने लगे।

सहसा नगरका द्वार खुला और एक दूत संधिका झंडा लिये निकला नेपोलियनने दूतका सम्मान किया। उस दूतने कहा – ‘ आपकी तोपें नगरके केन्द्रमें जहाँ गोले गिरा रही हैं, वहाँ समीप ही राजमहलमें हमारे सम्राट्की प्यारी पुत्री बीमार पड़ी है। कुछ और गोलाबारी हुई तो सम्राट् अपनी बीमार पुत्रीको छोड़कर अन्यत्र चले जानेको विवश होंगे।’

नेपोलियनके सेनापतियोंने बताया- ‘हम शीघ्र विजयी होनेवाले हैं। नगरके केन्द्रमें तोपोंका गोला गिराना युद्ध नीतिकी दृष्टिसे इस समय अत्यन्त आवश्यक है।’

नेपोलियन बोले- ‘युद्ध-नीतिकी बात तो ठीक है; किंतु मानवता कहती है कि एक रुग्णा राजकुमारीपर दया की जाय।’

अपनी आसन्न विजयको संदिग्ध बनानेकी आशङ्का लेकर भी नेपोलियनने नगरके केन्द्रमें गोला गिरानेवाली तोपोंको वहाँसे हटा लेनेकी आज्ञा दे दी।

After the battle of Ekmel, Napoleon reached the capital of Austria near the city of Vienna. He sent a messenger to the city with the treaty flag; But the people of the city killed that messenger. This news enraged Napoleon. His immense army surrounded the city from all sides. The French guns began to fire. The buildings of the city started collapsing.
Suddenly the gate of the city opened and a messenger came out carrying the flag of treaty. Napoleon respected the messenger. That messenger said – ‘Where your cannons are dropping shells in the center of the city, our emperor’s beloved daughter is lying ill in the palace. If there is some more shelling, the emperor will be forced to leave his sick daughter and go elsewhere.’
Napoleon’s generals told- ‘We are going to be victorious soon. Dropping cannonballs in the center of the city is very necessary from the point of view of war policy at this time.
Napoleon said – ‘The matter of war-policy is fine; But humanity says that a sick princess should be shown mercy.
Fearing to put his imminent victory in doubt, Napoleon ordered the cannons to be removed from the center of the city.
