[भज] निताई-गौर राधेश्याम [जप] हरेकृष्ण हरेराम
दक्षिण यात्रा के प्रस्थान
कथं ममाभून्न हि पुत्रशोक:
कथं ममाभून्न हि देहपात:
विलोक्यं युष्मच्चरणाब्जयुग्मं
सोढुं न शक्तोऽस्मि भवद्वियोगम्।।
प्रभु ने दक्षिण-यात्रा का निश्चय कर लिया है और इस निश्चय में किसी प्रकार का उलट-फेर न होगा, इसी बात को सोचते हुए भक्तवृन्द प्रभु के साथ-साथ सार्वभौम के गृह पर पहुँचे। भक्तों के सहित प्रभु को आते देखकर जल्दी से उठकर भट्टाचार्य ने प्रभु की चरणवन्दना की, सभी भक्तों को प्रेमाभिवादन किया और सभी के बैठने के लिये यथायोग्य आसन देकर धूप, दीप, नैवेद्यादि पूजन की सामग्री से उन्होंने प्रभु की पूजा की।
कुछ समय तक तो भगवत-सम्बन्धी कथा-वार्ता होती रही। अन्त में प्रभु ने कहा- ‘भट्टाचार्य महाशय! मेरे ये धर्मबन्धु मुझे शांतिपुर से यहाँ तक ले आये और इन्हीं की कृपा से मुझे पुरुषोत्तमभगवान के दर्शन हुए। सुनते हैं तीर्थों का फल कहीं कालान्तर में मिलता है, किन्तु मुझे तो जगन्नाथ जी के दर्शनों का फल दर्शन करते ही प्राप्त हो गया। आज-जैसे महानुभावों से प्रेम होना कोटि तीर्थों के फलस्वरुप ही है। आपसे साक्षात्कार होना मैं भगवान पुरुषोत्तम के दर्शनों का ही महाफल समझता हूँ। आपके सत्संग से मुझे बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई और मेरा इतना समय खूब आनन्दपूर्वक व्यतीत हुआ। सम्भवतया आपको पता होगा कि मेरे एक ज्येष्ठ भ्राता विश्वररूप 16 वर्ष की ही अवस्था में गृह त्यागकर संन्यासी हो गये थे। ऐसा सुना जाता है कि वे दक्षिण की ओर गये थे। मेरी इच्छा है कि मैं भी उनके चरण-चिह्नों का अनुसरण करके दक्षिण-देश की यात्रा करूँ। इससे एक पन्थ दो काज होंगे। इसी बहाने से दक्षिण के सभी तीर्थों के दर्शन हो जायँगे और सम्भवतया विश्वरूप जी से किसी-न-किसी तीर्थ में भेंट हो जायगी। अब आप मुझे दक्षिण जाने की अनुमति प्रदान कीजिये।’
इनता सुनते ही भट्टाचार्य सार्वभौम तो मर्माहत होकर कटे वृक्ष की भाँति बेहोश होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़े। उनकी दोनों आँखों से अश्रु बहने लगे। कुछ क्षण के पश्चात संभलकर वे बड़े ही करुणस्वर में कहने लगे- ‘प्रभो ! मैं समझता था कि मेरा सौभाग्य सूर्य अब उदय हो गया। अब मैं बड़भागी बन चुका। अब मुझे प्रभु की संगति का निरन्तर प्राप्त होता रहेगा, किंतु हृदय को बेधने वाली इस विचित्र बात को सुनकर तो मेरे दु:ख का पारावर नहीं रहा। अत्यन्त दरिद्रावस्था से जिस प्रकार कोई राजा बन गया हो और थोड़े ही दिनों में उसे राज्यसिंहासन से गिराकर फिर दीन-हीन कंगाल बना दिया जाय। ठीक वही दशा आज मेरी हो गयी है! प्रभो ! आप मुझे छोड़कर कहीं अन्यत्र न जायँ। यदि कहीं जाना ही हो तो मुझे भी साथ लेते चलें! मैं आपके पीछे अपने कुटुम्ब, परिवार तथा पद-प्रतिष्ठा सभी को छोड़ने के लिये तैयार हूँ।’
प्रभु ने सार्वभौम को धैर्य बँधाते हुए कहा- ‘भट्टाचार्य महाशय! जब आप इतने विद्वान और समझदार होकर इस प्रकार की भूली-भूली सी बातें करेंगे तो फिर अन्य लोगों की बात ही क्या है? आप धैर्य धारण करें। मैं शीघ्र ही यात्रा समाप्त करके यहीं लौटकर आ जाऊँगा।’
भट्टाचार्य ने कहा- ‘प्रभो ! आपके लौटने तक क्या हो, इस बात का किसे पता है। यह जीवन क्षणभंगुर है। आप मुझे निराश्रित छोड़कर अकेले न जाइये!’ प्रभु ने प्रेमपूर्वक कहा- ‘ये भक्त मेरी अनुपस्थिति में यहीं रहेंगे। आप सब मिलकर कृष्णकीर्तन करते रहिये। मैं शीघ्र ही लौअ आऊँगा। आप प्रसन्न होकर मुझे अनुमति प्रदान कीजिये।’ कुछ विवशता प्रकट करते हुए शोक के स्वर में भट्टाचार्य ने कहा- ‘आप स्वतन्त्र ईश्वर हैं, आपकी इच्छा के विरुद्ध बर्ताव करने की शक्ति ही किसमें है? आप दक्षिण-देश के तीर्थों की यात्रा करने के निमित्त अवश्य ही जायँगें, किंतु मेरी हार्दिक इच्छा है कि कुछ काल यहाँ और रहकर मेरी सेवा स्वीकार कीजिये।’
भक्तवत्सल गौरांग अपने परमप्रिय कृपापात्र सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य के इस अनुरोध की उपेक्षा न कर सके। वे पाँच दिनों तक भट्टाचार्य की सेवा को स्वीकार करके पुरी में ही रहे और नित्यप्रति भट्टाचार्य के ही घर उनकी प्रसन्नता के निमित्त भिक्षा करते रहे। भट्टाचार्य की पत्नी भाँति-भाँति के सुस्वादु पदार्थ बना-बनाकर प्रभु को भिक्षा कराती थीं। इस प्रकार पाँच दिनों तक भट्टाचार्य के घर भिक्षा करके और उनके चित्त को सन्तुष्ट बनाकर प्रभु ने दक्षिण-यात्रा की तैयारियाँ कीं।
प्रात: काल प्रभु भक्तों के सहित उठकर नित्य-कर्म से निवृत हुए। उसी समय अपने दो-चार प्रधान शिष्यों के सहित सार्वभौम भट्टाचार्य प्रभु के स्थान पर आ पहुँचे। प्रभु उन अपने सभी भक्तों के सहित श्रीजगन्नाथ जी के दर्शनों के लिये गये। मन्दिर में जाकर प्रभु ने श्रद्धा-भक्ति के सहित भगवान के चरणों में साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और उनसे दक्षिण-यात्रा की अनुमति माँगी। उसी समय पुजारी ने भगवान की प्रसाद माला और प्रसादान्न लाकर प्रभु को दिया। प्रभु ने इसे ही भगवत-आज्ञा समझकर प्रसाद को शिरोधार्य किया और मन्दिर की प्रदक्षिणा करते हुए प्रभु सभी भक्तों के सहित समुद्र-तट पर पहुँचे। प्रभु भट्टाचार्य से बार-बार लौट जाने का आग्रह कर रहे थे, किंतु भट्टाचार्य लौटते ही नहीं थे। तब तो प्रभु अत्यन्त ही दु: खित होकर वहाँ बैठ गये और सार्वभौम को भाँति-भाँति से समझाने लगे। सार्वभौम चुपचाप बैठे प्रभु की बातें सुन रहे थे।
रोते-रोते भट्टाचार्य ने कहा- ‘प्रभो! आप दक्षिण की ओर तो जा ही रहे हैं। रास्ते में गोदावरी के तटपर विद्यानगर नामकी एक बड़ी राजधानी पड़ेगी। वह राज्य उत्कल-राज्य के ही अन्तगर्त है। वहाँ का राज्यशासन यहीं के राजा रामानन्दराय करते हैं। वे वैसे जाति के तो कायस्थ हैं, किंतु हैं बड़े भगवत-भक्त। उनकी वैष्णवता श्लाघनीय ही नहीं, साधारण लोगों के लिये अनुकरणीय भी है। उन्हें आप अपने दर्शन देकर अवश्य कृतार्थ करते जायँ। सांसारिक विषयी पुरुष समझकर उनकी उपेक्षा न करें।’
प्रभु ने गद्गद कण्ठ से स्नेह के स्वर में कहा- ‘भट्टाचार्य महोदय ! भला, जिनके लिये आपके हृदय में इतना स्थान है, वे महाभाग चाहे चाण्डाल ही क्यों न हों, मेरे वन्दनीय हैं। आपकी जिनके ऊपर इतनी कृपा है, वे अवश्य ही कोई परमभागवत भगवद्भक्त वैष्णव होंगे। मैं उनके दर्शन करके अपने को अवश्य ही कृतार्थ करूँगा। अब आप अपने घर को लौट जायँ।’
लौटने का नाम सुनते ही फिर भट्टाचार्य विकल हो गये, उन्होंने रोते-रोते प्रभु के पैर पकड़ लिये और अपने मस्तक को उनसे रगड़ते हुए कहने लगे- ‘पता नहीं, अब कब इन अरुण चरणों के दर्शन होंगे।’ प्रभु ने दु: खित मन से भट्टाचार्य का आलिंगन किया। प्रभु के कमलनयन भी सजल बने हुए थे। भट्टाचार्य प्रभु का प्रेमालिंगन पाते ही मूर्च्छित हो गये। प्रभु उन्हें ऐसी ही अवस्था में छोड़कर जल्दी से आगे चले गये और भट्टाचार्य दु:खित मन से सर्वस्व गंवाये हुए व्यापारी की भाँति अपने घर लौट आये।
इधर प्रभु जल्दी-जल्दी समुद्र के किनारे-किनारे आगे की ओर बढ़ रहे थे, वे भक्तों से बार-बार लौटने का आग्रह कर रहे थे, किन्तु भक्त लौटते ही नहीं थे, इसी प्रकार ‘अब लौटेंगे, अब लौटेंगे’ कहते हुए नित्यानन्द प्रभृति भक्तों के सहित प्रभु अलालनाथ पहुँचे।
अलालनाथ पहुँचने पर बहुत-से लोग प्रभु के दर्शनों के लिये वहाँ आकर एकत्रित हो गये। इतने में ही गोपीनाथाचार्य प्रभु के लिये चार कौपीन, एक काषाय रंग का बहिर्वास (ओढ़ने का वस्त्र) और भगवान् का महाप्रसाद लेकर अलालनाथ में आ पहुँचे। नित्यानन्द जी प्रभु को लोगों से दूर हटाकर समुद्र-किनारे ले गये और वहाँ से स्नान कराकर मन्दिर में ले आये। मन्दिर में आकर भक्तों ने प्रभु को प्रसादान्न का भोजन कराया। प्रभु ने बड़े ही स्नेह के साथ गोपीनाचार्य के लाये हुए महाप्रसादान्न का भोजन किया। प्रभु के भोजन कर लेने के अनन्तर सब भक्तों ने भी भोजन किया और वह रात्रि प्रभु ने वहीं कथा-कीर्तन और भगवत-चिन्तन करते हुए भक्तों के साथ बितायी।
प्रात: काल नित्यकर्म से निवृत्त होकर प्रभु ने आगे चलने का विचार किया। भक्तों से अब प्रभु ने आग्रहपूर्वक लौट जाने के लिये कहा। प्रभु के वियोग का स्मरण करके सभी का हृदय फटने लगा। सभी प्रेम में बेसुध होकर रुदन करने लगे। प्रभु ने उन रोते हुए भक्तों को एक-एक करके आलिंगन किया। सभी मूर्च्छित होकर प्रभु के पैरों में लोटने लगे। प्रभु उन सबको रोते ही छोड़कर आगे को चले गये। पीछे-पीछे कृष्णदास प्रभु के कमण्डलु तथा वस्त्रों को लेकर चल रहे थे। आगे-आगे मत्त गजेन्द्र की भाँति श्रीकृष्ण-प्रेम में छके हुए प्रभु निर्भय भाव से चले जा रहे थे। रास्ते में वे भगवान के इन नामों का कीर्तन करते जाते थे-
कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! हे।
कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! हे।।
कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! कृष्ण ! रक्ष माम्।

How could I not grieve for my son: How could I not have a fall: I look at your pair of feet I cannot bear your separation
The Lord has decided to travel to the south and there will be no change in this decision, thinking that the devotees along with the Lord reached the house of the universal. Seeing the Lord coming along with the devotees, Bhattacharya got up early and worshiped the Lord’s feet, greeted all the devotees with love and worshiped the Lord with dhoop, lamp, naivedyadi worship materials, giving suitable seats for everyone to sit.
For some time the story-talks related to Bhagwat continued. In the end the Lord said – ‘ Mr. Bhattacharya! These religious brothers of mine brought me here from Shantipur and by their grace I had the darshan of Lord Purushottam. It is heard that the fruit of pilgrimages is attained somewhere over time, but I got the fruit of Jagannath ji’s darshan as soon as I had darshan. To be in love with great people like today is the result of crores of pilgrimages. I consider having an interview with you as a great result of seeing Lord Purushottam. I was very happy with your satsang and my time was spent very happily. Probably you would know that one of my elder brothers, Vishwarrup, left home and became a monk at the age of 16. It is heard that they went towards the south. I wish to follow in his footsteps and travel to the south. This will lead to two actions in one direction. With this pretext, all the pilgrimages of the South will be seen and it is possible that Vishwaroop ji will be met in one or the other pilgrimage. Now you give me permission to go south.
As soon as Bhattacharya Sarvabhaum heard this, he fell on the ground fainting like a cut tree. Tears started flowing from both his eyes. After a few moments, being careful, he started saying in a very compassionate voice – ‘Lord! I used to think that my lucky sun has now risen. Now I have become a bad luck. Now I will continue to receive the company of the Lord, but hearing this strange thing that pierces my heart, my sorrow is beyond measure. The way someone has become a king from extreme poverty and in a few days he is thrown from the royal throne and then made a destitute pauper. Exactly the same condition has happened to me today! Lord! Don’t leave me and go anywhere else. If you have to go somewhere, take me with you too! I am ready to leave my family, family and post-reputation behind you.
Giving patience to the sovereign, the Lord said – ‘ Mr. Bhattacharya! When you, being so learned and intelligent, do such silly things, then what is the point of other people? Have patience. I will soon finish my journey and come back here.’
Bhattacharya said – ‘ Lord! Who knows what will happen till you return. This life is transitory. Don’t leave me destitute and go alone!’ The Lord lovingly said- ‘These devotees will stay here in my absence. All of you together keep doing Krishna Kirtan. I will come back soon. You please grant me permission.’ Expressing some helplessness, Bhattacharya said in a voice of sorrow – ‘You are an independent God, who has the power to behave against your will? You will definitely go to visit the pilgrimages of the South-country, but I have a heartfelt desire to stay here for some more time and accept my service.’
Bhaktavatsal Gauranga could not ignore this request of his most beloved benefactor Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. Accepting Bhattacharya’s service, he remained in Puri for five days and daily begged at Bhattacharya’s house for his happiness. Bhattacharya’s wife used to make alms to the Lord by making various delicious things. In this way, by begging at Bhattacharya’s house for five days and making his mind satisfied, the Lord made preparations for the journey to the South.
Early in the morning, the Lord got up with the devotees and retired from his daily work. At the same time Sarvabhaum Bhattacharya along with two or four of his main disciples reached the place of the Lord. The Lord went to see Shri Jagannathji along with all his devotees. Going to the temple, the Lord prostrated at the feet of the Lord with devotion and sought permission from him to travel to the South. At the same time the priest brought God’s Prasad Mala and Prasadanna and gave it to the Lord. Considering this as Bhagwat’s order, the Lord offered Prasad to the head and while circumambulating the temple, the Lord along with all the devotees reached the sea-shore. Prabhu was repeatedly urging Bhattacharya to return, but Bhattacharya did not return. Then the Lord sat there after being very sad and started explaining to the universal in many ways. The sovereigns were sitting silently listening to the words of the Lord.
Crying Bhattacharya said – ‘ Lord! You are going south anyway. On the way there will be a big capital named Vidyanagar on the banks of Godavari. That state is under Utkal-Rajya only. The kingdom there is ruled by the local king Ramanandraya. Although he is a Kayastha by caste, he is a great devotee of the Lord. His Vaishnavism is not only praiseworthy but also exemplary for the common people. By giving them your darshan, you must go on doing gratitude. Don’t ignore them considering them worldly subjects.’
The Lord said in a voice of affection from Gadgad’s voice – ‘ Mr. Bhattacharya! Well, for whom you have so much place in your heart, even if they are Mahabhag Chandals, they are worshipable to me. Those on whom You have shown so much grace must be some Supreme Bhagavat Bhagavad Bhakt Vaishnav. I will definitely make myself grateful by seeing him. Now you go back to your home.
On hearing the name of his return, Bhattacharya again became distraught, crying and holding the feet of the Lord and rubbing his head with them, he said- ‘I don’t know, now when will I see these Arun feet.’ embraced Bhattacharya. Lord’s lotus eyes also remained beautiful. Bhattacharya fainted as soon as he received the Lord’s embrace. Prabhu left him in such a state and went ahead quickly and Bhattacharya returned to his home like a merchant who had lost everything with a sad heart.
Here the Lord was moving forward from the shore to the shore of the sea, he was urging the devotees to return again and again, but the devotees did not return. Prabhu reached Alalnath along with the devotees.
On reaching Alalnath, many people gathered there to have darshan of the Lord. Meanwhile, Gopinathacharya arrived at Alalnath with four kaupins, a purplish-coloured outer garment and the Lord’s Mahaprasad for the Lord. Nityanand ji took the Lord away from the people and took him to the sea-shore and took him to the temple after taking a bath from there. After coming to the temple, the devotees offered Prasadam food to the Lord. The Lord very lovingly ate the Mahaprasadam brought by Gopinacharya. After the Lord had taken his food, all the devotees also had their food and the Lord spent that night there with the devotees doing Katha-Kirtan and Bhagavat-Chintan.
After retiring from his daily routine in the morning, the Lord thought of moving forward. Now the Lord urged the devotees to return. Everyone’s heart started bursting remembering the departure of the Lord. Everyone started crying unconsciously in love. The Lord embraced those crying devotees one by one. Everyone fainted and started rolling at the feet of the Lord. The Lord left them all crying and went ahead. Krishnadas was walking behind with Prabhu’s kamandalu and clothes. Like Matta Gajendra in front of him, the Lord was going fearlessly, full of love for Shri Krishna. On the way he used to chant these names of God-
