शास्त्रों में गु का अर्थ बताया गया है- अंधकार या मूल अज्ञान और रु का का अर्थ किया गया है- उसका निरोधक। गुरु को गुरु इसलिए कहा जाता है कि वह अज्ञान तिमिर का ज्ञानांजन-शलाका से निवारण कर देता है। अर्थात दो अक्षरों से मिलकर बने ‘गुरु’ शब्द का अर्थ – प्रथम अक्षर ‘गु का अर्थ- ‘अंधकार’ होता है जबकि दूसरे अक्षर ‘रु’ का अर्थ- ‘उसको हटाने वाला’ होता है।
अर्थात् अंधकार को हटाकर प्रकाश की ओर ले जाने वाले को ‘गुरु’ कहा जाता है। गुरु वह है जो अज्ञान का निराकरण करता है अथवा गुरु वह है जो धर्म का मार्ग दिखाता है। श्री सद्गुरु आत्म-ज्योति पर पड़े हुए विधान को हटा देता है।
ओशो कहते है गुरु के बारे में कि ‘गुरु का अर्थ है- ऐसी मुक्त हो गई चेतनाएं, जो ठीक बुद्ध और कृष्ण जैसी हैं, लेकिन तुम्हारी जगह खड़ी हैं, तुम्हारे पास हैं।
कुछ थोड़ा-सा ऋण उनका बाकी है- शरीर का, उसके चुकने की प्रतीक्षा है। बहुत थोड़ा समय है।
… गुरु एक पैराडॉक्स है, एक विरोधाभास है : वह तुम्हारे बीच और तुमसे बहुत दूर, वह तुम जैसा और तुम जैसा बिलकुल नहीं, वह कारागृह में और परम स्वतंत्र।
अगर तुम्हारे पास थोड़ी सी भी समझ हो तो इन थोड़े क्षणों का तुम उपयोग कर लेना, क्योंकि थोड़ी देर और है वह, फिर तुम लाख चिल्लाओगे सदियों-सदियों तक, तो भी तुम उसका उपयोग न कर सकोगे।’
रामाश्रयी धारा के प्रतिनिधि गोस्वामीजी वाल्मीकि से राम के प्रति कहलवाते हैं कि-
तुम तें अधिक गुरहिं जिय जानी।
राम आप तो उस हृदय में वास करें- जहां आपसे भी गुरु के प्रति अधिक श्रद्धा हो। लीलारस के रसिक भी मानते हैं कि उसका दाता सद्गुरु ही है- श्रीकृष्ण तो दान में मिले हैं। सद्गुरु लोक कल्याण के लिए मही पर नित्यावतार है- अन्य अवतार नैमित्तिक हैं। संत जन कहते हैं-
राम कृष्ण सबसे बड़ा उनहूं तो गुरु कीन्ह।
तीन लोक के वे धनी गुरु आज्ञा आधीन ॥
गुरु तत्व की प्रशंसा तो सभी शास्त्रों ने की है। ईश्वर के अस्तित्व में मतभेद हो सकता है, किन्तु गुरु के लिए कोई मतभेद आज तक उत्पन्न नहीं हो सका। गुरु को सभी ने माना है। प्रत्येक गुरु ने दूसरे गुरुओं को आदर-प्रशंसा एवं पूजा सहित पूर्ण सम्मान दिया है।
भारत के बहुत से संप्रदाय तो केवल गुरुवाणी के आधार पर ही कायम हैं।
गुरु ने जो नियम बताए हैं उन नियमों पर श्रद्धा से चलना उस संप्रदाय के शिष्य का परम कर्तव्य है। गुरु का कार्य नैतिक, आध्यात्मिक, सामाजिक एवं राजनीतिक समस्याओं को हल करना भी है।
राजा दशरथ के दरबार में गुरु वशिष्ठ से भला कौन परिचित नहीं है, जिनकी सलाह के बगैर दरबार का कोई भी कार्य नहीं होता था।
गुरु की भूमिका भारत में केवल आध्यात्म या धार्मिकता तक ही सीमित नहीं रही है, देश पर राजनीतिक विपदा आने पर गुरु ने देश को उचित सलाह देकर विपदा से उबारा भी है। अर्थात् अनादिकाल से गुरु ने शिष्य का हर क्षेत्र में व्यापक एवं समग्रता से मार्गदर्शन किया है। अतः सद्गुरु की ऐसी महिमा के कारण उसका व्यक्तित्व माता-पिता से भी ऊपर है।
गुरु तथा देवता में समानता के लिए एक श्लोक के अनुसार- ‘ यस्य देवे परा भक्तिर्यथा देवे तथा गुरु’
अर्थात् जैसी भक्ति की आवश्यकता देवता के लिए है वैसी ही गुरु के लिए भी। बल्कि सद्गुरु की कृपा से ईश्वर का साक्षात्कार भी संभव है। गुरु की कृपा के अभाव में कुछ भी संभव नहीं है।
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णु गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः।
गुरुः साक्षात परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः।।
अपनी महत्ता के कारण गुरु को ईश्वर से भी ऊंचा पद दिया गया है।
शास्त्र वाक्य में ही गुरु को ही ईश्वर के विभिन्न रूपों- ब्रह्मा, विष्णु एवं महेश्वर के रूप में स्वीकार किया गया है।
गुरु को ब्रह्मा कहा गया क्योंकि वह शिष्य को बनाता है नव जन्म देता है।
गुरु, विष्णु भी है क्योंकि वह शिष्य की रक्षा करता है।
गुरु, साक्षात महेश्वर भी है क्योंकि वह शिष्य के सभी दोषों का संहार भी करता है।
संत कबीर कहते हैं-
‘ हरि रूठे गुरु ठौर है, गुरु रूठे नहिं ठौर॥’
अर्थात् भगवान के रूठने पर तो गुरु की शरण रक्षा कर सकती है किंतु गुरु के रूठने पर कहीं भी शरण मिलना संभव नहीं है। जिसे ब्राह्मणों ने आचार्य, बौद्धों ने कल्याणमित्र, जैनों ने तीर्थंकर और मुनि, नाथों तथा वैष्णव संतों और बौद्ध सिद्धों ने उपास्य सद्गुरु कहा है उस श्री गुरु से उपनिषद् की तीनों अग्नियां भी थर-थर कांपती हैं। त्रैलोक्यपति भी गुरु का गुणनान करते है। ऐसे गुरु के रूठने पर कहीं भी ठौर नहीं। अपने दूसरे दोहे में कबीरदास जी कहते है-
‘सतगुरु की महिमा अनंत, अनंत किया उपकार लोचन अनंत, अनंत दिखावण हार’
अर्थात् सद्गुरु की महिमा अपरंपार है। उन्होंने शिष्य पर अनंत उपकार किए है। उसने विषय-वासनाओं से बंद शिष्य की बंद आंखों को ज्ञान चक्षु द्वारा खोलकर उसे शांत ही नहीं अनंत तत्व ब्रह्म का दर्शन भी कराया है। आगे इसी प्रसंग में वे लिखते है।
‘भली भई जु गुर मिल्या, नहीं तर होती हांणि।
दीपक दिष्टि पतंग ज्यूं, पड़ता पूरी जांणि।
अर्थात् अच्छा हुआ कि सद्गुरु मिल गए, वरना बड़ा अहित होता। जैसे सामान्यजन पतंगे के समान माया की चमक-दमक में पड़कर नष्ट हो जाते हैं वैसे ही मेरा भी नाश हो जाता। जैसे पतंगा दीपक को पूर्ण समझ लेता है, सामान्यजन माया को पूर्ण समझकर उस पर अपने आपको न्यौछावर कर देते हैं। वैसी ही दशा मेरी भी होती। अतः सद्गुरु की महिमा तो ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश भी गाते है, मुझ मनुष्य की बिसात क्या? "दुनिया के समस्त गुरुओं को मेरा नमन"

The meaning of Gu has been told in the scriptures – darkness or basic ignorance and the meaning of Ru has been given – its deterrent. Guru is called Guru because he dispels the darkness of ignorance with the help of knowledge. That is, the meaning of the word ‘Guru’ made up of two letters – the meaning of the first letter ‘Gu’ is ‘darkness’ while the meaning of the second letter ‘Ru’ is ‘the one who removes it’.
That is, the one who removes darkness and leads to light is called ‘Guru’. Guru is the one who dispels ignorance or Guru is the one who shows the path of Dharma. Sri Sadhguru removes the existing legislation on Atma-Jyoti.
Osho says about Guru that ‘Guru means-such liberated consciousness, which are just like Buddha and Krishna, but standing in your place, with you.
They have some little debt left – of the body, waiting to be repaid. There is very little time.
… The master is a paradox, a contradiction: he is between you and far from you, he is like you and not at all like you, he is in prison and absolutely free.
If you have even a little bit of understanding, then make use of these few moments, because it is just a little more time, then you will cry for centuries and centuries, even then you will not be able to use it.’
Goswamiji, the representative of Ramashrayi Dhara, makes Valmiki say about Ram that- You know more secrets than me.
Ram, you should reside in that heart – where there is more devotion towards Guru than you. Even the fans of Lilaras believe that his benefactor is Sadguru – Shri Krishna has been received in charity. Sadhguru is a daily incarnation on Mahi for public welfare – other incarnations are Naimittik. Saints say-
Ram Krishna is the greatest among them, then the Guru is none. Those rich gurus of three worlds are under the command.
All the scriptures have praised the principle of Guru. There can be difference of opinion in the existence of God, but no difference of opinion has arisen for the Guru till date. Everyone has accepted the Guru. Each Guru has given full respect to other Gurus including respect-praise and worship.
Many sects of India are established only on the basis of Guruvani.
It is the ultimate duty of the disciple of that sect to follow the rules given by the Guru with devotion. The work of the Guru is also to solve moral, spiritual, social and political problems.
Who is not familiar with Guru Vashishtha in the court of King Dasaratha, without whose advice no work of the court was done.
The role of the Guru has not been limited to spirituality or religiousness only in India, when a political calamity befell the country, the Guru has also recovered the country from calamity by giving proper advice. That is, from time immemorial the Guru has guided the disciple comprehensively and comprehensively in every field. Therefore, because of such glory of Sadguru, his personality is higher than that of parents.
For the similarity between Guru and Deity, according to a verse: ‘ Yasya deve para bhaktiryatha deve tatha guru’
That is, as devotion is needed for the deity, so is it for the Guru. Rather, with the grace of Sadguru, God’s interview is also possible. Nothing is possible without the grace of the Guru.
The teacher is Brahma, the teacher is Vishnu, the teacher is God, the teacher is Maheshwara. The teacher is directly the Supreme Brahman. I offer my obeisances to that Sri Guru.
Because of his importance, Guru has been given a higher status than God.
In the scriptures itself, Guru has been accepted in the form of different forms of God – Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. Guru is called Brahma because he transforms the disciple, gives new birth. Guru is also Vishnu because he protects the disciple. Guru is also a real Maheshwar because he destroys all the faults of the disciple.
Saint Kabir says- ‘ Hari is angry with Guru Thaur, Guru is not angry.’
That is, when God gets angry, the Guru’s refuge can protect, but it is not possible to get refuge anywhere when the Guru is angry. The one who is called Acharya by Brahmins, Kalyanmitra by Buddhists, Tirthankar and Muni by Jains, Naths and Vaishnava saints and Buddhist Siddhas as Upasya Sadguru, all the three fires of Upanishads also tremble with that Sri Guru. Trilokyapati also praises the Guru. There is no place for such a teacher to get angry. Kabirdas ji says in his second couplet-
‘The glory of Satguru is infinite, the favor done is infinite, the love is infinite, the defeat is infinite’
That means the glory of Sadguru is limitless. He has done infinite favors to the disciple. By opening the closed eyes of the disciple who were closed by sensual desires with the eye of knowledge, he not only calmed him down but also made him see the infinite element Brahman. He writes further in this context.
‘Bhali bhai jo gur mileya, otherwise there would have been loss. Deepak Dishti is like a kite, it falls completely.
That means it was good that Sadguru was found, otherwise it would have been a big loss. Just as ordinary people get destroyed like moths by falling in the glitter of Maya, similarly I would also get destroyed. Just as a moth considers a lamp to be complete, common people consider illusion to be complete and sacrifice themselves on it. My condition would have been the same. That’s why even Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh sing the glory of Sadguru, what is the fate of a human being? “I bow down to all the teachers of the world”
