सनातन गोस्वामी का नियम था गिरि गोवर्द्धन की नित्य परिक्रमा करना..

अब उनकी अवस्था 90 वर्ष की हो गयी थी, नियम पालन मुश्किल हो गया था फिर भी वे किसी प्रकार निबाहे जा रहे थे।

एक बार वे परिक्रमा करते हुए लड़खड़ाकर गिर पड़े, एक गोप-बालक ने उन्हें पकड़ कर उठाया और कहा..

बाबा, तो पै सात कोस की गोवर्द्धन परिक्रमा अब नाँय हय सके. परिक्रमा को नियम छोड़ दे।

बालक के स्पर्श से उन्हें कम्प हो आया। उसका मधुर कण्ठस्वर बहुत देर तक उनके कान मे गूंजता रहा।

पर उन्होंने उसकी बात पर ध्यान न दियां परिक्रमा जारी रखी, एकबार फिर वे परिक्रमा मार्ग पर गिर पड़े। दैवयोग से वही बालक फिर सामने आया। उन्हें उठाते हुए बोला:

बाबा, तू बूढ़ो हय गयौ है.. तऊ माने नाँय परिक्रमा किये बिना.. ठाकुर प्रेम ते रीझें, परिश्रम ते नाँय।

फिर भी बाबा परिक्रमा करते रहे। पर वे एक संकट में पड़ गये। बालक की मधुर मूर्ति उनके हृदय में गड़ कर रह गयी थी।

उसकी स्नेहमयी चितवन उनसे भुलायी नहीं जा रही थी। वे ध्यान में बैठते तो भी उसी की छबि उनकी आँखों के सामने नाचने लगती थी।

खाते-पीते, सोंते-जागते हर समय उसी की याद आती रहती थी।

एक दिन जब वे उसकी याद में खोये हुए थे, उनके मन में सहसा एक स्पंदन हुआ, एक नयी स्फूर्ति हुई।

वे सोचने लगे, एक साधारण व्रजवासी बालक से मेरा इतना लगाव! उसमें इतनी शक्ति कि, मुझ वयोवृद्ध वैरागी के मन को भी इतना वश में कर ले कि मैं अपने इष्ट तक का ध्यान न कर सकूँ।

नहीं! वह कोई साधारण बालक नहीं हो सकता, जिसका इतना आकर्षण है।

तो क्या वे मेरे प्रभु मदनगोपाल ही हैं, जो यह लीला कर रहे हैं? एकबार फिर यदि वह बालक मिल जाय तो मैं सारा रहस्य जाने वगैर न छोड़ूँ।

संयोगवश एक दिन परिक्रमा करते समय वह मिल गया। फिर परिक्रमा का नियम छोड़ देने का वही आग्रह करना शुरू किया।

सनातन गोस्वामी ने उसके चरण पकड़कर अपना सिर उन पर रख दिया और लगे आर्त भरे स्वर में कहने लगे..

प्रभु, अब छल न करो, स्वरूप में प्रकट होकर बताओ मैं क्या करूँ? गिरिराज मेरे प्राण हैं, गिरिराज परिक्रमा मेरे प्राणों की संजीवनी है। प्राण रहते इसे कैसे छोड़ दूं?
