मां दुर्गा की सातवी शक्ति कालरात्रि के नाम से जानी जाती है मां कालरात्रि का स्वरुप देखने मे अत्यन्त भयानक है,लेकिन ये सदैव शुभ फल ही देती हैइसी कारण इनका नाम शुभंक्करी भी है*
दुर्गा सप्तशती के प्रधानिक रहस्य में बताया गया है कि जब देवी ने इस सृष्टि का निर्माण शुरू किया और ब्रह्मा, विष्णु एवं महेश का प्रकटीकरण हुआ उससे पहले देवी ने अपने स्वरूप से तीन महादेवीयों को उत्पन्न किया सर्वेश्वरी महालक्ष्मी ने ब्रह्माण्ड को अंधकारमय और तामसी गुणों से भरा हुआ देखकर सबसे पहले तमसी रूप में जिस देवी को उत्पन्न किया वह देवी ही कालरात्रि हैं.देवी कालरात्रि ही अपने गुण और कर्मों द्वारा महामाया, महामारी, महाकाली, क्षुधा, तृषा, निद्रा, तृष्णा, एकवीरा, एवं दुरत्यया कहलाती हैं
माता कालरात्रि का स्वरूप
मां कालरात्रि का स्वरूप देखने में अत्यंत भयानक है, इनका वर्ण अंधकार की भाँति काला है. देवी काल-रात्रि का वर्ण काजल के समान काले रंग का है जो अमावस की रात्रि से भी अधिक काला है.केश बिखरे हुए हैं, कंठ में विद्युत की चमक वाली माला है.
माँ कालरात्रि के तीन नेत्र ब्रह्माण्ड की तरह विशाल व गोल हैं., जिनमें से बिजली की भाँति किरणें निकलती रहती हैं.इनकी नासिका से श्वास तथा निःश्वास से अग्नि की भयंकर ज्वालायें निकलती रहती हैं. माँ का यह भय उत्पन्न करने वाला स्वरूप केवल पापियों का नाश करने के लिए है.इन्ही तीन बड़े बड़े उभरे हुए नेत्रों से मां अपने भक्तों पर अनुकम्पा की दृष्टि भी रखती हैं.
मां कालरात्रि के तीन देवी की चार भुजाएं हैं दायीं ओर की उपरी भुजा से महामाया भक्तों को वरदान देती हैं, नीचे की भुजा से अभय का आशीर्वाद प्रदान करती हैं । बायीं भुजा में क्रमश: तलवार और खड्ग धारण किया है.
देवी कालरात्रि के बाल खुले हुए हैं और हवाओं में लहरा रहे हैं । देवी कालरात्रि अपने वाहन गर्दभ पर सवार हैं । मां का वर्ण काला होने पर भी कांतिमय और अद्भुत दिखाई देता है । देवी कालरात्रि का यह स्वरुप देखने मे अत्यन्त भयानक है, परंतु यही विचित्र रूप भक्तों के लिए अत्यंत शुभ है,और उन्हें यह सदैव शुभ फल ही देती है ।अत: देवी को शुभंकरी भी कहा गया है
कुण्डलिनी चक्र
सप्तमी की रात्रि ‘सिद्धियों’ की रात भी कही जाती है. कुण्डलिनी जागरण हेतु जो साधक साधना में लगे होते हैं । वह इस दिन सहस्त्रसार चक्र का भेदन करते हैं । सहस्त्रसार चक्र का भेदन करते ही साधक के लिए संसार की समस्त सिद्वियो का द्वार खुलने लगता है । इस चक्र मे साधक का मन पूर्णातः माॅ कालरात्रि के स्वरुप मे समाया रहता है ।
माॅ कालरात्रि दुष्टो का विनाश और ग्रह बाधाओ को दूर करने वाली है, जिससे साधक भयमुक्त हो जाता है ।
मां कालरात्रि का भोग:-
सप्तम नवरात्रे भगवती कालरात्रि की पूजा में गुड़ का नैवेद्य अर्पित करके ब्राह्मण को भी देना चाहिए, ऐसा करने से व्यक्ति भयमुक्त तथा शोकमुक्त होता है ।

The complexion of Goddess Kaal-Ratri is black like kajal, which is blacker than the new moon night. Her hair is scattered, there is a garland of electric light around her neck. The three eyes of Maa Kalratri are huge and round like the universe, from which rays like lightning keep coming out. Fierce flames of fire keep coming out from her nostrils during inhale and exhale. This fear-inducing form of the Mother is only to destroy the sinners. With these three big bulging eyes, the Mother also looks at her devotees with compassion. The three goddesses of Maa Kalratri have four arms. From the upper right arm, Mahamaya bestows blessings on the devotees, from the lower arm she bestows the blessings of fearlessness. He is holding a sword and a sword respectively in his left arm. Goddess Kalratri’s hair is open and swaying in the wind. Goddess Kalratri is riding on her vehicle Gardabha. Even though mother’s complexion is dark, she looks radiant and wonderful. This form of Goddess Kalratri is very scary to see, but this strange form is very auspicious for the devotees, and it always gives them auspicious results. Hence, the Goddess is also called Shubhankari.

Offering of Maa Kalratri:- In the worship of Bhagwati Kalratri of the seventh Navratri, Jaggery should be offered as Naiveda to the Brahmin, by doing this the person becomes free from fear and sorrow.
