एक दिन संध्या के समय सरयू के तट पर तीनों भाइयों संग टहलते श्रीराम से महात्मा भरत ने कहा, “एक बात पूछूं भईया?
माता कैकई ने आपको वनवास दिलाने के लिए मंथरा के साथ मिल कर जो षड्यंत्र किया था, क्या वह राजद्रोह नहीं था?
उनके षड्यंत्र के कारण एक ओर राज्य के भावी महाराज और महारानी को चौदह वर्ष का वनवास झेलना पड़ा तो दूसरी ओर पिता महाराज की दुखद मृत्यु हुई। ऐसे षड्यंत्र के लिए सामान्य नियमों के अनुसार तो मृत्युदंड दिया जाता है, फिर आपने माता कैकई को दण्ड क्यों नहीं दिया?
राम मुस्कुराए…बोले, “जानते हो भरत, किसी कुल में एक चरित्रवान और धर्मपरायण पुत्र जन्म ले ले तो उसका जीवन उसके असँख्य पीढ़ी के पितरों के अपराधों का प्रायश्चित कर देता है। जिस माँ ने तुम जैसे महात्मा को जन्म दिया हो उसे दण्ड कैसे दिया जा सकता है भरत ?”
भरत संतुष्ट नहीं हुए। कहा, “यह तो मोह है भइया, और राजा का दण्डविधान मोह से मुक्त होता है। एक राजा की तरह उत्तर दीजिये कि आपने माता को दंड क्यों नहीं दिया, समझिए कि आपसे यह प्रश्न आपका अनुज नहीं, अयोध्या का एक सामान्य नागरिक कर रहा है।
राम गम्भीर हो गए। कुछ क्षण के मौन के बाद कहा, “अपने सगे-सम्बन्धियों के किसी अपराध पर कोई दण्ड न देना ही इस सृष्टि का कठोरतम दण्ड है भरत!”
माता कैकई ने अपनी एक भूल का बड़ा कठोर दण्ड भोगा है। वनवास के चौदह वर्षों में हम चारों भाई अपने अपने स्थान से परिस्थितियों से लड़ते रहे हैं, पर माता कैकई हर क्षण मरती रही हैं।
अपनी एक भूल के कारण उन्होंने अपना पति खोया, अपने चार बेटे खोए, अपना समस्त सुख खोया, फिर भी वे उस अपराधबोध से कभी मुक्त न हो सकीं। वनवास समाप्त हो गया तो परिवार के शेष सदस्य प्रसन्न और सुखी हो गए, पर वे कभी प्रसन्न न हो सकीं। कोई राजा किसी स्त्री को इससे कठोर दंड क्या दे सकता है?
मैं तो सदैव यह सोच कर दुखी हो जाता हूँ कि मेरे कारण अनायास ही मेरी माँ को इतना कठोर दण्ड भोगना पड़ा।”
राम के नेत्रों में जल उतर आया था, और भरत आदि भाई मौन हो गए थे।
राम ने फिर कहा, “और उनकी भूल को अपराध समझना ही क्यों भरत! यदि मेरा वनवास न हुआ होता तो संसार भरत और लक्ष्मण जैसे भाइयों के अतुल्य भ्रातृप्रेम को कैसे देख पाता। मैंने तो केवल अपने माता-पिता की आज्ञा का पालन मात्र किया था, प” कोई दण्ड न देना ही इस सृष्टि का कठोरतम दण्ड है भरत तुम दोनों ने तो मेरे स्नेह में चौदह वर्ष का वनवास भोगा। वनवास न होता तो यह संसार सीखता कैसे कि भाइयों का सम्बन्ध होता कैसा है।” भरत के प्रश्न मौन हो गए थे। वे अनायास ही बड़े भाई से लिपट गए!राम कोई नारा नहीं हैं।राम एक आचरण हैं, एक चरित्र हैं, एक जीवन जीने की शैली हैं। *स्नेह वंदन* *प्रणाम*

Ram became serious. After a few moments of silence he said, “Bharat is the harshest punishment in this world for not punishing any crime of one’s relatives.”
Mother Kaikeyi has suffered a severe punishment for one of her mistakes. During the fourteen years of exile, four of us brothers have been fighting with the circumstances from our respective places, but Mother Kaikeyi has been dying every moment.
Because of one mistake she lost her husband, lost her four sons, lost all her happiness, yet she could never get rid of that guilt. When the exile ended, the remaining members of the family became happy and happy, but they could never be happy. What harsher punishment can a king give to a woman than this?
I always feel sad thinking that because of me, my mother had to suffer such harsh punishment unintentionally.”

Rama then said, “And why should Bharata consider their mistake as a crime! If I had not been in exile, how could the world have seen the incomparable fraternal love of brothers like Bharata and Lakshmana. I only obeyed my parents’ orders.” Was, “Not giving any punishment is the harshest punishment of this world, Bharat, both of you have spent fourteen years of exile in my love.
