बूंदी नगर में रामदासजी नाम के एक बनिया थे, वे व्यापार करने के साथ-साथ भगवान की भक्ति-साधना भी करते थे और नित्य संतों की सेवा भी किया करते थे।
भगवान ने अपने भक्तों (संतों) की पूजा को अपनी पूजा से श्रेष्ठ माना है क्योंकि संत लोग अपने पवित्र संग से असंतों को भी अपने जैसा संत बना लेते हैं। भगवान की इसी बात को मानकर भक्तों ने संतों की सेवा को भगवान की सेवा से बढ़कर माना है- ‘प्रथम भक्ति संतन कर संगा।’
रामदासजी सारा दिन नमक-मिर्च, गुड़ आदि की गठरी अपनी पीठ पर बांध कर गांव में फेरी लगाकर सामान बेचते थे जिससे उन्हें कुछ पैसे और अनाज मिल जाता था।
एक दिन फेरी में कुछ सामान बेचने के बाद गठरी सिर पर रख कर घर की ओर चले। गठरी का वजन अधिक था पर वह उसे जैसे- तैसे ढो रहे थे। भगवान श्रीराम एक किसान का रूप धारण कर आये और बोले -‘भगतजी आपका दु:ख मुझसे देखा नहीं जा रहा है। मुझे भार वहन करने का अभ्यास है, मुझे भी बूंदी जाना है, मैं आपकी गठरी घर पहुंचा दूंगा। ऐसा कह कर भगवान ने अपने भक्त के सिर का भार अपने ऊपर ले लिया और तेजी से आगे बढ़कर आंखों से ओझल हो गये।
गीता (९।१४) में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है -‘संत लोग धैर्य धारण करके प्रयत्न से नित्य कीर्तन और नमन करते हैं, भक्तिभाव से नित्य उपासना करते हैं। ऐसे प्रेमी संत मेरे और मैं उनका हूँ; इस लोक में मैं उनके कार्यों में सदा सहयोग करता हूँ।’
रामदासजी सोचने लगे -‘मैं इसे पहचानता नहीं हूँ और यह भी शायद मेरा घर न जानता पर जाने दो, राम करे सो होय।’ यह कहकर वह रामधुन गाते हुए घर की चल दिए। रास्ते में वे मन- ही- मन सोचने लगे – आज थका हुआ हूँ, यदि घर पहुंचने पर गर्म जल मिल जाए तो झट से स्नान कर सेवा-पूजा कर लूं और आज कढ़ी- फुलका का भोग लगे तो अच्छा है।
उधर किसान बने भगवान श्रीराम ने रामदासजी के घर जाकर गठरी एक कोने में रख दी और जोर से पुकार कर कहा – ‘भगतजी आ रहे हैं, उन्होंने कहा है कि नहाने के लिए पानी गर्म कर देना और भोग के लिए कढ़ी-फुलका बना देना।’
कुछ देर बाद रामदासजी घर पहुंचे तो उन्होंने देखा कि सामान की गठरी कोने में रखी है, उनकी पत्नी ने कहा -‘पानी गर्म कर दिया है, झट से स्नान कर लो। भोग के लिए गर्म-गर्म कढ़ी और फुलके भी तैयार हैं।’
रामदासजी ने आश्चर्यचकित होकर पूछा -‘तुमने मेरे मन की बात कैसे जान ली।’
पत्नी बोली -‘मुझे क्या पता तुम्हारे मन की बात ? उस गठरी लाने वाले ने कहा था।’
रामदासजी समझ गए कि आज रामजी ने भक्त-वत्सलतावश बड़ा कष्ट सहा। उनकी आंखों से प्रेमाश्रु झरने लगे और वे अपने इष्ट के ध्यान में बैठ गये।
ध्यान में प्रभु श्रीराम ने प्रकट होकर प्रसन्न होते हुए कहा -‘तुम नित्य सन्त-सेवा के लिए इतना परिश्रम करते हो, मैंने तुम्हारी थोड़ी-सी सहायता कर दी तो क्या हुआ ?’
गीता (८।१४) में भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा है –
अनन्यचेता: सततं यो मां स्मरति नित्यश: ।
तस्याहं सुलभ: पार्थ नित्ययुक्तस्य योगिन:।।
अर्थात्- ‘मेरा ही ध्यान मन में रखकर प्रतिदिन जो मुझे भजता है, उस योगी संत को सहज में मेरा दर्शन हो जाता है।’
रामदासजी ने अपनी पत्नी से पूछा -‘क्या तूने उस गठरी लाने वाले को देखा था ?’
पत्नी बोली -‘मैं तो अंदर थी, पर उस व्यक्ति के शब्द बहुत ही मधुर थे।’
रामदासजी ने पत्नी को बताया कि वे साक्षात् श्रीराम ही थे। तभी उन्होंने मेरे मन की बात जान ली।
दोनों पति-पत्नी भगवान की भक्तवत्सलता से भाव-विह्वल होकर रामधुन गाने में लीन हो गये।

There was a Bania named Ramdasji in Bundi Nagar, he used to do business as well as worship God and also used to serve the saints regularly. God has considered the worship of his devotees (saints) to be superior to his worship because the saints, with their holy association, make the saints like themselves. Considering the same thing of God, the devotees have considered the service of saints more than the service of God – ‘Pratham Bhakti Santan Kar Sanga’.
Ramdasji used to sell goods by hawking in the village by tying bales of salt-peppers, jaggery etc. on his back all day, from which he would get some money and grains.
One day, after selling some goods in the ferry, he kept the bundle on his head and walked towards the house. The weight of the bale was heavy but he was carrying it anyway. Lord Shri Ram came in the form of a farmer and said – ‘Bhagatji, your sorrow is not being seen by me. I have a load bearing practice, I also have to go to Bundi, I will deliver your bundle home. Saying this, the Lord took the weight of His devotee’s head on Himself and moved quickly and disappeared from sight.
In the Gita (9.14), Lord Krishna has said – ‘Saints, with patience, perform daily kirtan and obeisance with effort, worship regularly with devotion. Such loving saints are mine and I am theirs; I always cooperate in their works in this world.’
Ramdasji started thinking – ‘I do not recognize this and he may not even know my home, but let him go, Ram Kare So Hoy.’ Saying this he went to the house singing Ramdhun. On the way, he started thinking in his mind – today I am tired, if I get hot water after reaching home, then I should take a quick bath and do service-worship and if I enjoy curry and phulka today, then it is good. On the other hand, Lord Shri Ram, who became a farmer, went to Ramdasji’s house and put the bundle in a corner and called out loudly – ‘Bhagatji is coming, he has said to heat water for bath and make curry-phulka for enjoyment. ‘
After sometime Ramdasji reached home, he saw that the bundle of goods is kept in the corner, his wife said – ‘The water has been heated, take a quick bath. Hot curries and phulkas are also ready for enjoyment.
Ramdasji asked in surprise – ‘How did you know my mind.’
Wife said – ‘What do I know about your mind? The one who brought the bundle said.
Ramdasji understood that today Ramji suffered a lot due to devotion and devotion. The tears of love started flowing from his eyes and he sat in meditation of his Ishta.
In meditation, Lord Shri Ram appeared pleased and said – ‘You constantly work so hard for the service of the saint, what happened if I helped you a little?’
In the Gita (8.14) Lord Krishna has said – He who always remembers Me with an exclusive mind I am easily accessible to that ever-steadfast Yogi, O Arjuna.
Meaning- ‘The yogi saint who worships me every day, keeping my attention in mind, gets my darshan easily.’
Ramdasji asked his wife – ‘Did you see the one who brought that bundle?’ The wife said – ‘I was inside, but the words of that person were very sweet.’ Ramdasji told the wife that he was the real Shri Ram. Only then did he know my mind. Both the husband and wife were engrossed in singing Ramdhun, being engrossed in the devotion of God.
